A rebuild with a newer SDK can also change how the app behaves—even on older iOS releases. To find the cause, compare the exact OS and app builds, check Apple’s release notes for each affected version, and test the app on the versions and device families it supports.
What can change when iOS changes?
System APIs and defaults
An app relies on frameworks and services provided by iOS. Apple may change how an API behaves between releases, so an app feature that has not changed can still produce a different result after an OS update. The difference may be an intentional change, a fixed or newly introduced OS issue, a deprecated behavior, or a defect in the app’s own code. Apple’s Xcode guidance on testing a beta OS recommends checking for API issues and incompatibilities across releases.

Previously tolerated input may stop working
Sometimes an older OS accepts input that a newer version validates more strictly. In its iOS 16 release notes, Apple documented that CGImageCreate began enforcing parameter correctness: supplying an incorrect CGImageByteOrderInfo was no longer supported and could cause images to fail to load. This is a historical iOS 16 example of a compatibility break, not evidence of a current iOS defect. See Apple’s iOS 16 release notes.

A newer app build can matter too
The operating system is not the only variable. Apple warns that rebuilding an app with a new SDK can bring further API behavior changes, including changes that affect the app when it runs on older iOS versions. If behavior changed after an app update rather than an iOS update, record the app build and the Xcode/SDK used to produce it as well as the OS version.

- This phone is unlocked and compatible with any carrier of choice on GSM and CDMA networks (e.g. AT&T, T-Mobile, Sprint, Verizon, US Cellular, Cricket, Metro, Tracfone, Mint Mobile, etc.).
- Please check with your carrier to verify compatibility.
- The device does not come with headphones or a SIM card. It does include a generic (Mfi certified) charging cable.
- Tested for battery health and guaranteed to have a minimum battery capacity of 80%.
Why an availability check may not be enough
Code that checks whether an API or OS version is available can help an app select compatible behavior, but it cannot prevent every compatibility problem. Apple’s iOS and iPadOS 18.1 release notes describe an issue in which using if #available in WidgetBundleBuilder and SceneBuilder crashed on prior OS versions because of an “unknown OS version.” That is a version-specific documented issue, not a general claim that availability checks are unreliable. Consult the iOS and iPadOS 18.1 release notes when investigating that particular case.
How to investigate a difference between two iOS versions
- Capture the complete setup. Record the full iOS version and build number, device model, app version or build, and the Xcode/SDK version used to build the app. Apple’s iOS and iPadOS release-notes index asks developers reporting a bug to include the full OS version number.
- Reproduce the same action on both versions. Keep the app build, account or test data, and steps as consistent as possible. Note whether the problem occurs every time and whether it affects one feature or several.
- Check release notes for both affected OS versions. Look for API changes, known issues, fixes, workarounds, and deprecations that match the symptom. A matching note can point to an OS-specific issue; no matching note does not by itself prove that the app is at fault.
- Compare app builds and SDKs. If the app was rebuilt or updated, test the old and new app builds on the same OS where possible. This helps separate an OS change from a change introduced by the app or its newer SDK.
- Test supported versions and representative devices. Exercise the app’s relevant code paths on every supported major iOS version, including at least one device from each customer device family. Use Simulator for baseline coverage, then use physical devices when performance, memory limits, or hardware-specific behavior could affect the result.
- Report a suspected OS regression with a reproducible case. For a suspected issue on an older, non-beta OS, Apple recommends providing the affected versions and a runnable Xcode project through Feedback Assistant.
Simulator or physical iPhone?
Simulator is useful for broad, repeatable baseline checks, but it does not reproduce every condition of real hardware. Apple cautions that Simulator has limited testing coverage and is not a substitute for testing on physical devices with real memory and performance constraints. Use hardware when the issue may depend on device performance, memory pressure, or hardware capabilities; the appropriate device depends on which customer device family and behavior you need to cover.

Include beta iOS versions in the compatibility plan
Testing during the beta cycle can reveal incompatibilities before an OS release reaches users. Apple’s advice is direct: “To catch API issues or incompatibilities, test your app on every released beta version during the beta release cycle.” If the app is rebuilt with a beta SDK, repeat the checks on relevant older iOS versions too, since an SDK change can affect behavior there as well.

What to compare when the same app behaves differently
| Comparison | What to record or check | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Operating system | Full iOS version and build for each test | Release notes and behavior changes are version-specific. |
| Device | Model, device family, and relevant hardware capabilities | Performance, memory, and hardware-specific behavior may differ. |
| App build | App version or build number | An app update can introduce a change independent of an OS update. |
| Build tools | Xcode and SDK used for each app build | A newer SDK can change API behavior, including on older systems. |
| Test environment | Simulator, physical hardware, or both | Simulator does not cover all real-device constraints. |
| Release-note match | Relevant API changes, known issues, fixes, workarounds, or deprecations | May help distinguish a documented OS issue from an app-specific problem. |
