Use AI to generate hook options, not to decide what your video promises. A strong opening quickly tells the right viewer why the video matters, then begins delivering on that promise. Check every draft against the footage and your audience; no prompt guarantees better retention.
What makes a YouTube hook work?
A hook is the opening that helps a viewer decide whether to keep watching. Its job is not to tease endlessly: it should quickly reassure viewers that the video will deliver the value suggested by its title and thumbnail. YouTube recommends a concise intro that gets straight to that value. YouTube’s guidance on recommendation-system performance notes that viewers make this decision in the initial seconds, especially for Shorts and long-form videos.

Start with the video’s actual payoff. If the title promises a repair, a comparison, or an explanation, the first moments should move toward that subject rather than opening with a broad greeting or unrelated setup. A compelling line cannot make a misleading title or an unfulfilled promise work.

- Write the real payoff in one sentence. Say what the viewer will learn, see, or be able to do. Keep this grounded in what the finished video actually contains.
- Give the AI useful context. Include the intended audience, subject, main payoff, format (Short or long-form), and claims or outcomes it must not invent. Ask for several short alternatives using different approaches, such as a direct problem, a revealing result, or an immediate visual action. These are practical prompt ideas, not a YouTube-prescribed formula.
- Check each draft against the video. Discard lines that exaggerate, imply results the video does not show, or postpone the promised value. Keep a promising idea and rewrite it in your own voice.
- Choose the clearest opening, not the most dramatic one. Read each candidate aloud. A viewer should understand its relevance on first hearing, and the opening should fit both the audience and the format.
- Make the video deliver immediately. Follow the hook with footage, explanation, or an action that starts paying off its promise. Trim setup that does not help viewers reach the value.

How to judge AI-generated hook drafts
Use these editorial checks to compare alternatives. They are practical criteria informed by YouTube’s guidance, not an official YouTube scoring system.
- Promise accuracy: Does the hook describe something the video really delivers?
- Clarity at first hearing: Can the intended viewer understand the point without replaying the line?
- Audience relevance: Does it address a reason this particular viewer would care?
- Evidence in the video: Does the opening match what the video actually shows or explains?
- Format and voice: Does it sound natural for the creator and suit a Short or a longer video?
There is no established universal ideal hook length or proven prompt that guarantees stronger retention. YouTube’s platform guidance is practical advice about audience expectations and response, not controlled evidence that AI use itself improves performance.

Use audience response to improve the next opening
Long-form videos
After publishing, inspect the audience-retention report to see where viewers stayed, rewatched, skipped, or left. YouTube recommends experimenting with the first 30 seconds. Try a change to a future opening, then review the report again. Treat the result as feedback, not proof that one line alone caused a change: topic, audience, packaging, and other parts of the video also shape response. See YouTube Help’s audience-retention guidance.

Shorts
Do not assume a Short’s opening should be judged exactly like a long-form intro. YouTube describes whether viewers choose to watch or ignore a Short, and whether they stick around, as relevant performance signals. Consider those signals in the context of Shorts rather than applying long-form retention expectations unchanged. YouTube’s performance guidance discusses viewer response across formats.
