Choose the correct screen, camera, and microphone, grant the required permissions, and make a short test recording before you begin.
Choose a method that fits what you need
| Method | Best fit | What to expect |
|---|---|---|
| Loom | A quick walkthrough that you want to edit and share | Its Screen and Camera mode lets you choose what to capture, then edit and share the recording. Its support guidance says it cannot record two monitors at once or switch monitors during a recording. |
| Clipchamp | A screen-and-camera recording inside a Windows editor workflow | The recorder requests camera and microphone access and lets you choose connected devices when needed. |
| OBS | A configurable layout with control over the screen and webcam sources | You add a display or window capture and a webcam source to a scene, then check the audio devices. It takes more setup than choosing a combined recording mode. |
| Mac built-in screen recording | Capturing the display with microphone narration, without a webcam overlay | Apple documents screen capture with optional microphone audio. Its instructions do not describe adding a live webcam image to that recording workflow. |
Tool features and plan limits can change. The cited product instructions do not establish current Loom pricing or a quality comparison, so choose based on workflow and controls rather than an assumed performance difference.

Before you record
- Decide what the viewer should see. Choose a full display or a specific window or capture area. Close private tabs and notifications, and arrange any material you plan to show.
- Choose the camera and microphone. If more than one is connected, select the intended devices explicitly instead of relying on automatic defaults.
- Check permissions. The operating system, recording app, and sometimes the browser each need the appropriate access to the screen, camera, or microphone.
- Check your narration. Speak and watch the audio meter where one is available. A visible webcam image does not confirm that the intended microphone is recording.
- Make a short test. Play it back and confirm the screen, camera image, and narration are all present before recording the full walkthrough.
Record with Loom
- Open Loom’s screen recorder and choose Screen and Camera.
- Select the screen or capture area you want to show, then choose the camera and microphone.
- Grant the requested screen, camera, and microphone permissions. If a device is missing, check the operating system and browser permissions as well as Loom’s device choices.
- Start recording, deliver your walkthrough, and stop the recording when finished.
- Review the result, then use Loom’s editing and sharing workflow if it suits your needs.
If you use multiple monitors, select the desired display before recording: Loom’s support guidance says it cannot capture two monitors simultaneously or switch displays during a recording.
Record with Clipchamp
- Open Clipchamp’s screen-and-camera recorder.
- Allow camera and microphone access when prompted.
- If you have multiple cameras or microphones, use the device dropdowns to select the ones you intend to use. Clipchamp may select defaults automatically, but verify them rather than assuming they are correct.
- Choose the screen or area to capture and start recording.
- Stop and review the recording to make sure the screen, camera, and narration are all included.
Build the recording in OBS
- Create or select a scene in OBS.
- Add a display-capture source for a monitor, or a window-capture source for a particular app. Select the intended display or window in that source’s settings.
- Add a video-capture-device source and choose your webcam. Resize and position it in the scene so it does not cover important screen content.
- Check the Audio Mixer while speaking. If the wrong input is active or the meters do not move, open Settings → Audio and select the intended microphone device.
- Record a brief test and play it back. Confirm that the captured screen and webcam composition are right and that narration is audible before you record the full session.
OBS’s scene-and-source approach gives you layout control, but you need to configure both video sources and verify audio yourself.
#1 Best Overall
Record a Mac screen without a webcam overlay
Apple’s built-in screen-recording instructions describe capturing all or part of the display and including microphone audio; they do not document a webcam overlay in this workflow. To put your camera image in the same recording, use a recorder with screen-and-camera capture or compose the screen and webcam in OBS.
To manage Mac screen-capture access, open System Settings → Privacy & Security → Screen & System Audio Recording and review which listed apps are allowed. Apple notes that some apps, including Apple TV, may not allow their windows to be recorded. Apple Support’s screen-recording page is published September 15, 2026.

Fix common problems
The webcam image is missing
- Confirm that the recorder is in a combined screen-and-camera mode, or that the webcam source has been added to the OBS scene.
- Check the app’s selected camera and its operating-system and browser camera permissions.
- In Clipchamp, check the camera device dropdown if several cameras are connected.
The recording has no narration, or the wrong microphone
- Check that microphone access is allowed for the app or browser.
- Select the intended microphone in the recorder. In OBS, open Settings → Audio and check the Audio Mixer meters while speaking.
- Make a short test and play it back; a moving meter alone does not confirm that the finished file contains the audio you expect.
The screen or window is unavailable
- Review the operating system’s screen-recording permissions and the app or browser’s capture permission.
- On Mac, some protected apps may prevent their windows from being recorded.
- In Loom, choose the monitor before starting; its guidance does not support capturing two displays at once or switching displays mid-recording.
The webcam or microphone does not appear in Clipchamp
Allow camera and microphone access when prompted, then use Clipchamp’s device dropdowns to select a connected device. If access was denied earlier, review the relevant operating-system and browser privacy settings.
