Write one clear claim per section, attach every market figure to an assumption, distinguish measured traction from forecasts, and finish with a specific next step.
Use the same core facts for every audience, but change the emphasis. Investors need a credible path to scale and returns; incubators also assess learning velocity, coachability, team fit and the clarity of the milestone you will reach with support.

What a one-page startup pitch is—and what it is not
The page is a first-pass investment thesis, not a compressed data room or a miniature business plan. Its job is to make a stranger understand the company and agree to a follow-up meeting, pilot, interview or application review. Y Combinator’s 2016 pitching guidance says a short pitch in a group setting rarely produces an investment immediately; its purpose is to gauge interest and secure a follow-up meeting.
The U.S. Small Business Administration describes a lean startup business plan as something that can take as little as an hour to write and is typically only one page (2023). That speed is possible because the page states the most decision-relevant facts; it does not try to document every operating detail.

There is no universal investor-mandated word count or design. Follow the recipient’s submission rules when they exist. If none are supplied, use one readable page with generous white space, short paragraphs, descriptive headings and a single visual hierarchy. A reviewer should be able to state your customer, pain, solution, proof, market, business model, team and ask after one reading.
One-page pitch versus pitch deck
| Dimension | One-page pitch | Pitch deck |
|---|---|---|
| Primary job | Earn the next conversation by presenting a complete, rapid thesis. | Support a longer presentation and leave room for evidence, examples and discussion. |
| Detail level | One main idea and the strongest proof in each section. | Multiple slides can unpack product flow, cohorts, forecasts, risks and appendices. |
| Reader behavior | Often read asynchronously or during fast screening. | Usually presented or reviewed with more time and context. |
| Best closing | A concrete request for a meeting, pilot, interview or application step. | A discussion that moves into diligence and a defined next meeting. |
Do not shrink a 20-slide deck until the type is unreadable. Select the facts that change a decision, then offer the deck or data room after interest is established.
Build the page in the order a reviewer needs it
The sequence below follows the company story from purpose to proof to request. Give every section a clear heading so a reviewer can scan it and return to a specific question.

1. Company and purpose: one precise sentence
Open with this formula:
[Company] helps [specific customer] achieve [specific outcome] by [distinct mechanism].
Name the customer narrowly enough that the reader can picture the buyer, and state an outcome that can eventually be measured. “We use AI to transform commerce” is a category statement; “We help independent clinics reduce appointment no-shows by automating reminder and rescheduling workflows” identifies a customer, result and mechanism. Replace broad adjectives such as “huge,” “revolutionary” or “disruptive” with a result, date and denominator when you have them.
The U.S. SBA’s 2021 guidance recommends an elevator-pitch-style description that says exactly what the business does. Avoid opening with a mission paragraph, a technology inventory or a market-size claim before the reader knows the company’s purpose.

2. Problem: describe a costly, repeated pain
State who experiences the pain, how often it occurs, what it costs in time or money, and what they do today. Explain the failure of the current workaround rather than implying that every alternative is bad.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →- Customer: identify the role, organization type or user segment that feels the problem.
- Trigger and frequency: show when the pain appears and how regularly it recurs.
- Consequence: quantify lost revenue, labor, risk, delay or an important outcome when a defensible measure exists.
- Current workaround: name the manual process, incumbent product, spreadsheet, agency or “do nothing” choice.
- Failure: explain the specific limitation that leaves the customer unsatisfied.
Sequoia Capital’s business-plan framework asks founders to describe the pain and the shortcomings of current solutions. A problem becomes investable when the reader can see why a customer would change behavior and pay, not merely why the problem is interesting.
3. Solution and “why now?”
Explain how the product works in plain language, what unique insight drives it and what has changed to make this the right moment. Connect each feature to the problem; omit a feature that does not support the core outcome.
“Why now?” can be a regulatory change, a newly available data source, a cost curve, a distribution shift, a behavior change or a market event. Name the timing trigger and show why it was unavailable or uneconomic before. Do not treat a trend as proof of demand: the customer evidence belongs in the traction section.
YC’s short-pitch template asks how the company delivers its promise and what unique insight it has. A useful solution paragraph therefore answers three questions: what the customer does, what your product changes, and why your approach can produce the stated outcome.

Present TAM, SAM and SOM as a bottom-up chain of assumptions, not as a headline borrowed from a broad industry report:
- TAM (total addressable market): the full annual spend represented by all customers who could need the category. State the number of potential customers, the relevant annual price or spend and the source or calculation.
- SAM (serviceable available market): the part of TAM your product, geography, language, regulatory status and distribution can actually serve.
- SOM (serviceable obtainable market): the portion you can plausibly win in the stated planning period, tied to a sales capacity, conversion, retention or channel assumption.
For every figure, show the arithmetic or cite the underlying source and date. For example, a customer count multiplied by an annual contract value is more auditable than “a multibillion-dollar market.” GOV.UK’s investor template, published 2 December 2025, specifically calls for defensible TAM/SAM/SOM assumptions. Label a forecast as a forecast and do not present it as observed demand.
5. Traction and validation
Use dated, auditable signals. A reviewer should be able to tell what happened, when it happened and whether it is a one-time result or a recurring trend.
- Paying customers and the date they started paying.
- Revenue, with the period and whether it is recurring, one-time or contracted.
- Growth, with the start and end dates and the denominator used.
- Retention, repeat usage, renewal or cohort behavior.
- Pilots, signed design partners, conversion rates or experiment results.
- Waitlist size, provided you explain qualification and conversion rather than treating sign-ups as customers.
- Partnerships, integrations or distribution commitments, distinguishing an agreement from realized sales.
GOV.UK calls for traction supported by real evidence, and YC’s template expects progress and growth. Put projections in a separate sentence or label them clearly. If you are pre-revenue, use validated learning: completed interviews, a paid design-partner commitment, a measured experiment, a repeatable activation event or another signal that tests a specific assumption. Never imply that interest, a nonbinding conversation or a forecast is revenue.
6. Competition, alternatives and your advantage
List direct competitors, indirect products and the customer’s current workaround. “No competitors” signals that you have not defined the problem broadly enough; every important customer choice is an alternative.
Then state the focused reason you can win. It might be a distribution edge, proprietary workflow data, a lower-friction implementation, a compliance capability, a cost advantage, a network effect or unusually deep domain expertise. Tie the advantage to evidence: a faster deployment, a higher conversion, a signed channel partner or a capability competitors cannot easily reproduce. Avoid declaring a moat before you can explain how it compounds.

Sequoia’s checklist includes competition and alternatives and asks how the company will win. A small comparison table can clarify the choice without turning the page into a feature matrix:
| Customer option | What it does well | Unmet need your product targets |
|---|---|---|
| Current internal process | Already familiar and immediately available. | Manual effort, inconsistent quality or limited visibility. |
| Direct category product | Established workflow and reference customers. | A segment, integration or outcome it serves poorly. |
| Adjacent tool or service | Solves part of the job or reaches the buyer. | Fragmented handoffs, higher total cost or missing data. |
| Your product | Specific mechanism tied to the stated outcome. | The capability you will prove through the next milestone. |
7. Business model and economics
Say who pays, what they pay for, how pricing is determined and how the product reaches them. If pricing is not final, give the current test or hypothesis and label it accordingly.
- Payer and package: identify the buyer and the unit of value—seat, usage, transaction, subscription, service engagement or another measure.
- Pricing logic: connect the price to customer value, comparable spending or a tested willingness-to-pay signal.
- Gross-margin direction: explain whether delivery costs should fall, rise or remain stable as volume grows; include a measured margin only when you can support it.
- Acquisition and distribution: state the sales motion, channel, partner or self-serve path and the cost or capacity constraint that matters.
- Cost structure and revenue streams: identify the major variable and fixed costs and any secondary stream that is material to the model.
The SBA’s lean-plan elements include channels, cost structure and potential revenue streams. Investors need to see a path from customer value to scalable economics; incubator reviewers also need to see that you understand which assumptions must be tested next.
8. Team and earned insight
Give one line to each founder or key operator. Include the role, relevant domain expertise, prior execution and the reason this team has unusual access to the problem or customer. “Ten years in technology” is less useful than a specific product shipped, regulated environment navigated, customer segment served or research result produced.
Connect each person to a risk on the page: product delivery, distribution, compliance, technical research or operations. If a critical capability is missing, state the near-term hiring or adviser plan rather than hiding the gap. Sequoia and GOV.UK both identify management or team evidence as an investor expectation.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems9. Ask, use of funds and milestone
State the amount or resource requested, the instrument if relevant, what it will fund and the milestone it should achieve. Do not include a number you cannot defend.
Best Value
Map the request to two or three priorities—for example, completing a product capability, running a defined set of customer pilots or hiring for a bottleneck—and attach a measurable outcome to each. Set the principal milestone for the next 12–18 months, with a date or period, and explain how reaching it changes the company’s financing, revenue or learning position.
An incubator request may be workspace, introductions, technical support or a small grant rather than investment. Name the resource and the specific learning or operating milestone it unlocks. An investor ask should make the financing need and the next value-creating proof point equally clear.
10. Vision and next step
End with the five-year outcome if the plan works: the customer or system you expect to change, not an unbounded claim to “reinvent everything.” Then make one concrete request—schedule a meeting, run a pilot, conduct an interview or review an application. A clear next step turns a description into a conversation.

Tailor the same facts to investors and incubators
Do not create two contradictory stories. Keep the purpose, problem, solution and evidence consistent, then change what you foreground.
| Audience | Emphasis on the page | Evidence that carries weight | Useful closing request |
|---|---|---|---|
| Investors | Market scale, repeatable distribution, defensibility, economics and a credible return path. | Revenue or validated demand, growth, retention, pricing, margins, competitive advantage and the next financing milestone. | A meeting to discuss the round and diligence. |
| Incubators | Learning velocity, coachability, team fit, customer access and a sharply defined milestone. | Experiments, insight from users, iteration speed, pilot commitments and evidence that the team uses feedback. | An interview, pilot, program application or mentor conversation. |
Check each program’s current rubric before submitting. A program may ask for a particular file format, application question, geography, stage or milestone; those requirements override a generic layout preference.
Adapt the proof to your stage
Pre-revenue
Lead with the customer pain and the experiment that tests it. Show who you interviewed or recruited only when the sample and selection are meaningful, and state what changed because of the learning. A signed pilot, paid design-partner commitment, repeat use or a conversion result is stronger than an undifferentiated sign-up count. Keep a forecast in a clearly labeled section and show the assumptions behind it.
Revenue-generating
Put the most decision-relevant operating measures near the top of the traction section: revenue period, growth interval, customer count, retention or renewal, and the channel that produced them. Explain whether a large customer is repeatable or exceptional. Use the business-model section to connect price, delivery cost and acquisition motion to the economics you expect at scale.
Design and edit the page for skeptical readers
- Draft long, then cut. Write the complete argument first; remove claims that do not change a decision.
- Put the customer and outcome first. Test the opening sentence on someone who does not know the category.
- Keep one main idea per section. Use subheads, bullets and short paragraphs instead of dense blocks.
- Attach evidence to claims. Add a date, denominator, source or calculation to every market and traction number.
- Separate observed facts from forecasts. Mark projections, targets and hypotheses explicitly.
- Protect white space. Readability is part of the screening test; shrinking type to fit more information defeats the one-page purpose.
- Run the skeptical-reader pass. Ask a stranger to state the customer, pain, solution, proof, market, model, team and ask after one reading. Rewrite the section they cannot recall.
- Check consistency. The customer in the purpose sentence should match the market, traction, channel and team evidence. The ask should fund the stated milestone.
Common failure modes and repairs
- Jargon before meaning: replace technical labels with the customer action and outcome, then explain the mechanism.
- Huge market, no arithmetic: show customer count, price, geography, segment and source for TAM, SAM and SOM.
- Feature catalogue: keep only features that prove the stated solution or advantage.
- Unqualified traction: add dates, period, denominator and whether the signal is paid, contracted, active or projected.
- “No competitors” claim: include direct, indirect and do-nothing alternatives and explain the narrow reason you can win.
- Generic team biographies: tie each person’s experience to a company risk or earned insight.
- Unclear ask: name the resource, two or three uses and the 12–18-month milestone it should produce.
- Investor language sent unchanged to an incubator: add coachability, learning loops, team fit and program-specific outcomes.
- Deck squeezed onto one page: remove detail rather than making the page unreadable, and offer the fuller deck after a follow-up.

Sources and frameworks to keep beside you
Y Combinator’s Practical Design: Pitching (2016) frames the short pitch as a route to investor interest and follow-up. The U.S. Small Business Administration’s business-plan guidance (2021) supports a precise elevator-pitch description, and its 2023 guidance notes that lean startup plans are often one page. Sequoia Capital’s Writing a Business Plan sequence covers company purpose, problem, solution, why now, market potential, competition and alternatives, business model, team, financials and vision. GOV.UK’s investor template, published 2 December 2025, emphasizes a clear, concise, evidence-backed pitch and defensible TAM/SAM/SOM assumptions. Use those frameworks as checklists, then obey the specific recipient’s current submission rubric.
