How to Write a Good ChatGPT Prompt When Custom Instructions Aren’t Enough

When Custom Instructions fall short for a particular task, make the prompt specific: state the job, supply relevant context, define the answer format, and refine based on the response.

When your saved Custom Instructions do not cover a particular job, put that job’s requirements in the prompt itself. State what ChatGPT should do, provide the context it needs, and define the answer you want. Custom Instructions are for preferences to consider across chats; a prompt can supply the one-off details, constraints, and format for the current task.

What makes a ChatGPT prompt useful?

A useful prompt makes the task and the criteria for a good answer clear. OpenAI recommends being clear and specific about what you want ChatGPT to do, then refining the request if the result misses the mark. See OpenAI’s prompt-engineering best practices and its ChatGPT prompting guidance.

Start with the task

Use a direct verb and name the scope: “Compare these two introductions,” “Summarize this report,” or “Explain how to reset this router.” If you want a comparison of two items, identify both. If you need a summary of supplied material, say what material to use.

Include only context that changes the answer

Give ChatGPT relevant background, source text, audience, and constraints rather than expecting it to infer them. For example, an explanation for a first-time user may need different language and detail from one for a technician. Add any limits that matter, such as using only the text you provide or focusing on a particular decision.

Define the result

Say what the answer should cover and specify its format, length, tone, or level of detail when those choices matter. “Give me the main differences in a table” is more actionable than “Tell me about these options.” A format request sets an expectation; it does not ensure every response will match it perfectly.

A practical prompt pattern

Use this checklist as a starting point, not a mandatory formula:

  • Task: What do you want ChatGPT to do?
  • Context: What background or source material does it need?
  • Audience or purpose: Who is the answer for, or what will it help you accomplish?
  • Requirements: What should it include, leave out, or prioritize?
  • Output: What format, length, tone, or level of detail would be useful?
  • Check: What should it flag as uncertain or identify as missing?

For example:

Compare the two draft introductions below for a general audience. Recommend the clearer one, explain your choice in three bullets, and suggest one revision. Keep the tone direct. If neither is clear, say what information is missing.

Drafts: [paste text]

This example illustrates how to combine a task, audience, output requirements, and a check for missing information. Replace those details with the ones relevant to your request.

How should you structure a complicated request?

For work with several requirements or stages, make the order and priorities explicit. OpenAI’s API-oriented prompting guidance recommends putting instructions before reference material and separating them with markers such as ### or triple quotation marks. It also suggests examples when they help show the expected output. These are organizational techniques, not guarantees of a particular response.

  1. Put the main instruction first. Say what the overall task is before pasting a long document or other reference material.
  2. Break the work into steps. If you want ChatGPT to extract facts, compare them, then recommend an option, list those actions in order.
  3. Mark priorities. If accuracy matters more than brevity, or the answer must use only supplied material, say so directly.
  4. Separate instructions from source content. Add a heading such as “Source text” or use clear delimiters so the reference material is distinct from your directions.
  5. Show a model output when useful. A short example can clarify the structure or style you mean.

How do you fix a response that misses the mark?

Use the actual miss to decide what to change. OpenAI recommends reviewing and refining prompts by adjusting the wording, adding context, or simplifying the request in its ChatGPT prompting guidance.

  • It answered too broadly: Narrow the scope or name the part you want addressed.
  • It lacked relevant detail: Add the missing context, source material, or constraint.
  • It used the wrong format or tone: Specify the desired format or tone in a follow-up.
  • It skipped a requirement: Identify the omission and ask for a revision that includes it.

A useful follow-up is: “You covered X, but I also need Y; revise the answer as [format].” Prompting is an iterative process: respond to what the answer actually did rather than searching for a magic phrase.

When should you use Custom Instructions instead of the prompt?

Use Custom Instructions for information or preferences you want ChatGPT to consider across chats. Use the individual prompt for context and requirements that belong to one task. OpenAI says Custom Instructions apply immediately to chats and can be edited or removed for future conversations in its Custom Instructions FAQ.

Approach Best suited to Example
Custom Instructions General preferences you want considered across chats “Prefer concise explanations.”
Prompt for the current task Job-specific context, requirements, or output choices “For this comparison, explain the differences in a table for a first-time buyer.”

Neither approach is automatically better. Put a preference in Custom Instructions if it recurs across conversations; put it in the prompt if it applies only to the request at hand. OpenAI’s Help Center lists character limits of up to 1,500 for Free and Go users and up to 5,000 for Plus, Pro, Enterprise, Business, and Education users. These are Help Center product details that can change; check the current FAQ for your account and interface.
