To check your voter registration and find your polling place, start with USAGov’s voter registration status lookup, select your state, and continue to its official election website. Check that your record is current, then confirm your assigned polling location and hours through the state lookup or your state or local election office. Verify the location before each election because assignments can change.

Check whether the record shows you as registered, and verify the name, residential address, and other details displayed. A party-affiliation field may not appear because some states do not require party affiliation.

Permanently moved to another state: Register in the new state. If the move is close to an election, promptly check both states’ official instructions; deadlines, residency rules, and same-day registration availability vary.
Find the polling place assigned to you
Use the state registration lookup or contact your state or local election office to confirm the location and hours for your election. Polling places are assigned based on residential address and may change between elections, so do not rely on a location you used previously or go to an arbitrary polling place. Voting somewhere other than your assigned location may require a provisional ballot, and the vote may not count. USAGov’s polling-place guidance was last updated February 23, 2026.
What to do if your record is missing, inactive, or unclear
Contact your state or local election office before the registration deadline and ask what action is needed. USAGov notes that an inactive registration may require extra steps; if you do not address it, you may have to cast a provisional ballot. The election office can also answer questions about deadlines, polling hours, accommodations, and instructions for your jurisdiction.

Registration deadlines differ by state, and a deadline may fall as much as a month before Election Day. Check the current rules for your state using USAGov’s voter registration deadlines page, then follow the state election website for the applicable date and submission process. North Dakota is the sole state exception to the general requirement that people register to become voters. USAGov’s deadline guidance was last updated February 23, 2026.
Registration cards and voter ID are different
A voter registration card confirms your registration, but you do not need the card to vote. It is not a substitute for checking that your record is current. ID requirements depend on state law: some states accept a printed or electronic registration record as voter ID, while others require different identification. Check your state’s official instructions rather than assuming a card or printed record will satisfy its ID rules. USAGov’s voter-card guidance was last updated February 23, 2026; see How to get a voter registration card.
