Working from home avoids exposing coworkers, but it does not make working through the flu a good substitute for rest. The CDC says people with flu should generally stay home and avoid contact with others except to get medical care. If you feel too unwell to function or need sleep, take sick time if available; consider limited remote work only if you feel well enough to do it without cutting into recovery.
Should you work from home with the flu?
Usually, prioritize recovery over work. The CDC’s flu guidance says most people with flu have mild illness and do not need medical care or antiviral drugs, but in most cases they should stay home and avoid contact with other people except to get medical care. Working remotely can reduce exposure at a workplace, but it does not prevent possible spread to people in your home.

The CDC recommends flexible leave and telework policies so workers can stay home when sick. That is workplace guidance, not a personalized schedule for working during flu. Whether to do any work is a practical decision based on how ill you feel and whether work would interfere with rest.

These are practical work-planning suggestions, not a CDC-prescribed flu schedule. Tell your manager or team you are sick and set a limited availability window, if needed. Then:

- Ask to use sick leave, reduce your workload, or move deadlines.
- Handle only urgent tasks; delegate what cannot wait and defer the rest.
- Protect time for sleep, fluids, meals, and breaks. Stop working if symptoms make it hard to concentrate or rest.
You do not need to remain online simply because you are at home. If working makes recovery harder, sign off and rest.
Limit the chance of spreading flu at home
Flu is most contagious during the first three days of illness, though some people can remain contagious longer, according to the CDC’s flu transmission guidance. Stay apart from well household members as much as feasible while sick. When you resume normal activities, the CDC advises added precautions for five days to reduce spread, including cleaner air, good hygiene, a well-fitting mask, distance from others, or testing when around them. When can you return to normal activities?
The CDC’s general threshold is that, for at least 24 hours, your symptoms have been improving overall and you have had no fever without using fever-reducing medicine. Both conditions must be true. The CDC’s flu-specific page also says that people with suspected or confirmed flu who do not have a fever should stay home from work for at least five days after symptoms begin. Because these recommendations address different circumstances, follow the flu-specific advice if you have flu without a fever. Check current CDC guidance for what to do if you get sick with flu and local public-health or employer rules.
When to contact a health care provider
Contact a health care provider promptly if you are at higher risk of flu complications, are very sick, or are worried about your illness. CDC says flu antiviral drugs work best when started early, ideally within two days after symptoms begin; a provider can advise whether treatment is appropriate for you.
