Neither ChatGPT nor Claude is a universal winner for personalization. ChatGPT separates Custom Instructions from Memory, which can use relevant information from past chats and other available sources. Claude offers account-wide profile preferences and response styles, project-level instructions, and—in accounts where it is available—past-chat search. To choose, compare how each feature is scoped and removed, then check model-improvement and retention settings separately.
Instructions and memory do different jobs
Instructions are guidance you provide directly: for example, that answers should be concise or use a particular format. Memory and retrieval provide context from other places, such as earlier conversations or project material. The products use different feature combinations, so “Which chatbot remembers my preferences between chats?” depends on whether you mean a persistent preference, context from previous chats, or material limited to a project.

When enabled, Memory may use relevant information from saved memories, past chats, Custom Instructions, Library files, or connected apps, depending on availability. It does not retain every detail, and the memory summary is a high-level view rather than a complete inventory of every source or detail. Removing context can take more than deleting a chat
A chat may not be the only place a detail is stored: deleting a conversation does not necessarily delete a separately saved memory. To remove information, OpenAI says users may need to delete the memory and original chat, and remove it from other applicable sources such as Library or connected apps. How Claude personalization works
Profile preferences and styles handle general guidance
Claude’s profile preferences are account-wide, while styles affect how a response is formatted or delivered. Anthropic also describes past-chat search as a way to retrieve earlier conversations when the feature is available. Projects keep instructions and knowledge within a project
Projects are documented for paid Claude plans. You can add project instructions and knowledge for use across conversations in that project. Claude says project chats do not share context with one another unless the material is added to project knowledge. This gives project context a different boundary from account-wide preferences. Past-chat search is distinct from a permanent profile
Search retrieves prior conversations when available; it is not the same as a profile preference that you explicitly set. Anthropic says users can switch past-chat search off and should delete a particular conversation if they do not want it included in search. Anthropic Help Center

Personalization, chat history, training, and retention are separate
Before entering private information, distinguish four questions: whether context can personalize a response, whether a conversation appears in account history, whether eligible content can help improve models, and what retention or safety processing may still apply. A personalization or memory control does not equal chat deletion, and a model-training opt-out does not necessarily remove a chat from history.
ChatGPT’s model-improvement setting
OpenAI says turning off Improve the model for everyone prevents new conversations from being used to train OpenAI models, while they can remain in chat history. Claude’s consumer privacy controls and safety caveat
Anthropic describes privacy and model-improvement choices for consumer Claude accounts. It also says conversations flagged by safety classifiers may still be used to improve internal trust-and-safety models. Its guidance for Free, Pro, and Max accounts recommends care with highly sensitive material, including financial information, health records, passwords, and confidential documents. OpenAI says business and managed-workspace data is treated differently from consumer data. For either service, check your organization’s policy and the controls visible on the account you actually use. Choose a setup by the kind of context you want
- For standing response preferences: use ChatGPT Custom Instructions or Claude profile preferences and styles. These are explicit guidance, not a guarantee that every detail from earlier chats will be carried forward.
- For evolving context across chats: ChatGPT Memory can use relevant past-chat information and other available sources. Claude past-chat search offers a retrieval path where it is enabled.
- For work or client context kept in a project: Claude Projects provide project instructions and knowledge, with no shared context between project chats unless it is added to project knowledge. ChatGPT project-only memory may offer a narrower boundary in supported experiences.
- For control over removal: identify the source of the context—saved memory, conversation, file, connected app, or project material—then remove it there as applicable. A single toggle may only stop future use.
- For limiting model improvement: review the model-improvement control independently from memory, history, and retention settings.
Settings checklist before using personalization
- Decide what should persist. Write general response preferences as explicit instructions; use memory, retrieval, or project knowledge only for context you want available beyond the current prompt.
- Check the scope. In ChatGPT, review Settings → Personalization → Memory and your Custom Instructions. In Claude, inspect profile preferences, styles, project instructions, and whether past-chat search is available.
- Check the source before deleting. In ChatGPT, remove a saved memory and relevant source material where needed. In Claude, delete a specific conversation if you do not want it included in past-chat search.
- Set model-improvement preferences separately. Find the current Data Controls or privacy settings for the account; do not infer training behavior from a memory setting.
- Confirm account and workspace conditions. Features and controls can vary by plan, region, platform, rollout, or workspace. Managed accounts may also have organization rules.
- Keep highly sensitive data out unless necessary and permitted. Review the provider’s current terms and your organization’s policy before sharing it.
