First identify the exact model and whether it is an HDD or SSD, then check whether it supports Seagate Secure. A normal format can erase files and prepare the drive for reuse, but formatting instructions alone do not establish that the data has been securely sanitized.
Before you erase anything
- Identify the drive. Check the model name and number on the drive or its label. Determine whether it is an HDD or SSD, and check Seagate’s current instructions for that exact model to see whether Seagate Secure is supported.
- Save anything you want to keep. Erasing, resetting, or formatting is destructive. Make and check a backup before proceeding.
- Choose a method for your drive and risk level. Seagate Secure’s reset tools apply only to listed compatible self-encrypting models. Disk Utility and Windows Disk Management can erase or reformat a drive, but those ordinary procedures should not be described as verified secure sanitization.
If the drive holds sensitive information and you cannot confirm a suitable sanitization method for its model and storage type, do not assume a quick format is enough. NIST’s September 2025 SP 800-88 Rev. 2 guidance emphasizes matching the sanitization technique to the media and verifying that it completed.

Choose the right method for your LaCie drive
| Method | When it applies | Result and important distinction |
|---|---|---|
| Seagate Secure Factory Reset | A listed, compatible Seagate Secure model; check the precise model and current Toolkit instructions. | Seagate says it deletes data and removes security settings, including the password. It requires the drive’s 32-character PSID. |
| Seagate Secure Crypto Erase | A listed, compatible Seagate Secure model. | Seagate says it deletes data but retains security settings and the existing password. That may not be the right handoff state for a sale. |
| macOS Disk Utility erase | A drive connected to a Mac. | Erases and reformats the selected device. Apple’s Security Options are available only for some storage types and are unavailable for SSDs. |
| Windows Disk Management | A drive connected to a Windows PC. | Deletes an existing partition if needed and creates a new volume. LaCie documents this as formatting, not as verified secure sanitization. |
If your model supports Seagate Secure
Seagate’s Toolkit manual lists compatible self-encrypting Seagate and LaCie drives. Its LaCie examples include Mobile Drive Secure, Mobile SSD Secure, Rugged RAID Shuttle, Rugged Secure, and Rugged SSD. These examples are not a guarantee that every product in a family or every LaCie drive supports the feature; confirm the exact model in the current Seagate instructions before using a reset option.
Factory Reset: the more suitable handoff when supported
According to Seagate’s Toolkit manual, Factory Reset deletes the data and removes security settings, including the password. The procedure asks for the drive’s 32-character PSID, a model-specific reset code that may be printed on an included insert or on the drive label. On Rugged Secure and Rugged RAID Shuttle models, the label is under the protective bumper. Follow the Toolkit instructions for the exact model; do not proceed unless you have confirmed the drive and understand that the operation is destructive.
#1 Best Overall
- RUGGED PROTECTION: Built to withstand drops, shocks, dust, and rain, keeping your data safe in tough conditions.
- MASSIVE STORAGE: 4TB capacity provides ample space for large files, backups, photos, videos, and more.
- USB-C CONNECTIVITY: Features a USB-C interface for fast, reliable data transfers with modern laptops and desktops.
- BROAD COMPATIBILITY: Works seamlessly with both Mac and PC, making it a versatile storage solution for any user.
- PORTABLE DESIGN: Compact and lightweight build makes it easy to carry your data wherever your work takes you.
Crypto Erase: data removal while keeping security settings
Seagate describes Crypto Erase as deleting all data while leaving security settings in place; the password remains unchanged. The vendor’s manual says the erased data “can never be recovered.” That is Seagate’s product claim, not an independent test result. Because the password and security controls remain, consider whether that is appropriate for the next owner before choosing this option.
Erase and reformat on a Mac
Disk Utility can erase an external drive, but take care to select the physical device rather than only a volume. Erasing the wrong item can destroy data on another disk.
- Connect the LaCie drive and open Disk Utility.
- Choose View > Show All Devices.
- In the sidebar, select the external physical device you intend to erase. Check its name and capacity carefully.
- Click Erase, choose the format and scheme you need, and confirm the erase.
Apple notes that Disk Utility’s Security Options control appears only for some storage types. When offered, it provides a write-over slider; Apple says these secure-erase options are unavailable for SSDs. Do not treat that control as a universal secure erase, particularly for a LaCie SSD.

Erase and reformat in Windows
LaCie’s USB 3.0 manual describes using Disk Management to remove an existing partition and create a new simple volume. This prepares the drive for reuse; the documented procedure does not establish that the old data has been securely sanitized.
- Connect the drive and allow Windows to detect it.
- Open Disk Management and identify the LaCie device by checking its capacity and existing partitions.
- If needed, delete the old partition, then create a new simple volume and complete the format steps.
LaCie warns that formatting erases the drive’s contents and recommends backing up first. Confirm the selected disk before deleting a partition or formatting; these actions are destructive.
Formatting is not the same as secure sanitization
Formatting removes the current data from the storage device for ordinary use, but the cited LaCie formatting instructions do not promise that a simple format prevents recovery by every means. Use “erase and reformat” to describe the Mac or Windows procedures above; reserve “securely sanitized” for a method supported for the particular device and properly verified.
NIST SP 800-88 Rev. 2 distinguishes sanitization approaches such as clear, purge, and destroy. It cautions that cryptographic erase depends on the device’s cryptographic capabilities and on prerequisites being met. A feature name alone is not proof those conditions apply to a particular drive. NIST also says degaussing should not be used for non-magnetic media such as flash storage: do not use a magnet as an erasure method for a LaCie SSD or other flash device.
Quick Recap
Check the result before handing the drive over
- Confirm the selected device was the LaCie drive, not another disk.
- Wait for the selected erase, reset, or formatting operation to finish and check for an error message.
- For a Seagate Secure reset, use the model-specific Toolkit procedure and required credentials, including the PSID for Factory Reset.
- If you used Disk Utility or Disk Management, describe the result accurately as an erase and reformat—not as verified secure sanitization.
- If the data was sensitive, the model is unsupported, or the operation did not complete successfully, do not sell the drive on the assumption that formatting made its former contents unrecoverable.
