How to Use an SSD as Cache for an HDD

An SSD can accelerate selected HDD workloads, but only when the storage platform supports caching. Compare the supported Synology, Windows Server, and Linux paths, cache modes, and setup risks.

You can use an SSD to speed up access to HDD-backed storage only when the NAS, server storage feature, or Linux block-layer setup supports SSD caching. There is no universal Windows or Linux switch that turns any attached SSD into an HDD cache. First identify your platform and storage layout; then choose its supported cache method and decide whether you need read-only caching or a write-capable mode.

What SSD caching does—and when it helps

An SSD cache keeps copies of frequently accessed data, or temporarily holds writes, so a system can serve some requests without waiting for the slower HDD. The HDD remains the backing storage, but caching does not make every operation run at SSD speed: it helps most when a workload repeatedly accesses a relatively small set of data.

Synology identifies frequent access to randomly placed small blocks as a likely benefit. Large sequential transfers are a poorer fit: the Linux kernel’s bcache documentation says, “Since random IO is what SSDs excel at, there generally won’t be much benefit to caching large sequential IO.” A cache may also disappoint if the active data set is larger than the cache or the application remains under heavy load. No platform-neutral benchmark establishes a universal speed increase.

Choose a method supported by your platform

Platform Documented route Important qualification
Synology NAS Create an SSD cache in Storage Manager and mount it on a volume. Support, compatible drives, cache mode, and requirements depend on the NAS model and DSM. Check Synology’s model support list and the manual.
Windows Server Use the applicable Storage Spaces feature, such as Storage Bus Cache or a Storage Spaces Direct configuration. These are configuration-specific server features, not a general cache setting for every Windows PC. Follow Microsoft’s eligibility and hardware guidance.
Linux Configure a block-layer method such as bcache or device-mapper cache. These are distinct implementations; setup changes how block devices are presented and requires planning, especially when data already exists.

Choose the cache mode before setup

Read-only caching stores copies of data that has been read; losing that cache does not make it the only copy of those cached reads. Write-capable modes have different behavior and different failure exposure, so check what your platform calls each mode rather than assuming the names are interchangeable.

  • Upgrade your laptop or desktop computer and feel the difference with super-fast OS boot times and application loads
  • Exceptional performance offering up to 535MB/s seq. Read and 500MB/s seq. Write speeds
  • Superior performance as compared to traditional hard drives (HDD)
  • Ultra-low power consumption
  • Backwards compatible with SATA II 3GB/sec
  • Read-only: Aims to accelerate repeated reads. Synology requires at least one SSD for this mode.
  • Writethrough: Writes are passed to the backing storage as well as the cache, according to the implementation’s rules. Linux device-mapper documents this as one of its cache modes.
  • Writeback: New writes can remain on the SSD temporarily before reaching the HDD. If the cache fails while it holds dirty data, the newest copy may be unavailable and data can be lost. Linux bcache warns of this risk when writeback is enabled; its default is off.

Synology’s read-write cache requires at least two SSDs for fault tolerance. Microsoft’s behavior depends on the Storage Spaces resiliency and configuration. For any write-capable setup, retain backups and use the platform’s supported shutdown and cache-removal procedure; an SSD cache is not a backup.

Set up an SSD cache on a Synology NAS

Synology’s Storage Manager creates and mounts the cache on a volume. Its instructions require healthy SSDs; drives in a cache group should be the same drive type. The target volume must be healthy and not running another task, and Synology recommends using drives on the product compatibility list. Consult the NAS model’s manual and supported-drive information before buying or installing an SSD.

  1. Confirm that your NAS model supports SSD cache using Synology’s model support list, last updated June 10, 2026, and check drive compatibility for your model.
  2. Check the volume and drives: the volume must be healthy and idle, and the SSDs must meet Synology’s cache-group requirements.
  3. In DSM, open Storage Manager, select SSD Cache, and choose the option to create a cache. Select the target volume and the cache mode, then follow the wizard. Synology’s Create SSD Cache instructions cover the supported procedure.
  4. Use read-only mode with at least one SSD, or read-write mode only when you have the required minimum of two SSDs and understand the additional write-cache failure risk.

For DSM 7.4, Synology’s technical specifications list 400 KB of system memory per 1 GB of SSD cache and say cache creation uses no more than 25% of pre-installed system memory. Treat these as Synology’s stated limits, not a performance recommendation; verify the requirements for your specific model and DSM version.

Use Windows Server storage features, not a generic PC shortcut

Microsoft documents SSD/HDD caching in specified Windows Server Storage Spaces configurations. Its Storage Bus Cache guidance applies to Windows Server 2016, 2019, 2022, and 2025, but eligibility, hardware, and server-role requirements are configuration-specific. Do not assume that connecting an SSD to an ordinary Windows PC enables transparent HDD caching.

Keep the two server paths distinct:

  • Storage Bus Cache: Follow the prerequisites and procedure in Microsoft’s feature documentation for the particular server configuration.
  • Storage Spaces Direct: Microsoft documents clustered SSD-plus-HDD deployments. Its guidance calls for at least two cache drives per server for redundancy and recommends sizing cache around the workload’s working set. See Microsoft’s drive-selection guidance and its storage-pool cache overview.

These features are not interchangeable setup recipes. Confirm your Windows Server release, roles, hardware, and storage layout against Microsoft’s current requirements before changing a pool.

Configure caching on Linux with a block-layer tool

Linux offers block-layer options, but they are not casual toggles for an already-mounted filesystem. The kernel’s bcache documentation describes formatting a backing device and cache device, registering them, attaching the backing device to a cache set, and then using the resulting /dev/bcache<N> device as normal block storage. The exact device names and steps depend on your system.

  1. Back up important data and map the existing block-device layout. Plan migration if the backing device is already in use; do not guess at device names or format the wrong disk.
  2. Choose one implementation and follow its documentation for the distribution and kernel you run. For bcache, use the kernel procedure to prepare and register the cache and backing devices, attach them, and expose the resulting bcache device to the intended storage stack.
  3. Keep writeback disabled unless you deliberately accept its failure exposure and have a tested recovery plan. Bcache documents writeback as off by default and warns that losing the SSD before dirty data reaches the backing drive can cause data loss.

Linux device-mapper cache is a separate alternative, with metadata, cache, and origin devices and its own writethrough, writeback, and passthrough modes. Do not combine device-mapper instructions with bcache setup.

Size the cache for the active workload

A cache should be chosen around the data that is repeatedly accessed, not simply made as large as possible. Microsoft recommends sizing cache for the workload’s working set in its drive-selection guidance. Synology also imposes memory constraints, including the DSM 7.4 figures above. A larger SSD does not by itself guarantee faster storage: if the workload is mostly sequential, changes constantly, or has a hot data set larger than the cache, benefits may be limited.

Common reasons an SSD cache cannot be created

  • The platform or model does not support it: Verify the NAS model, Windows Server feature prerequisites, or Linux method and kernel support.
  • The target volume is busy or unhealthy: Synology requires the target volume to be healthy and not running another task.
  • The drives are unsuitable: Check supported drive type and compatibility; Synology recommends compatible SSDs and requires matching drive type within a cache group.
  • Insufficient fault tolerance for the chosen mode: Synology read-write mode needs at least two SSDs; read-only mode needs at least one.
  • The cache seems to make little difference: The workload may be sequential, the hot data may exceed cache capacity, or the application may be constrained elsewhere.
  • The block device or filesystem is unavailable after Linux setup: Confirm the correct cached device is being used and follow the selected tool’s device-mapping and recovery documentation before making further changes.
