Treat a Fallout Power Fist replica as a potentially hazardous prop, not as an ordinary costume accessory. Wear it only when it is light, padded, firmly restrained and easy to remove; keep it visibly non-functional; submit it for venue inspection; and transport it covered in a padded, rigid container. Do not wear it through airport screening, assume it may enter an aircraft cabin, or open-carry it between a hotel, vehicle and convention.
What makes a Power Fist replica risky?
A Power Fist is visually associated with a powered weapon. A fictional name does not make airport screeners, police officers, transit operators or convention staff treat it as harmless. They assess what the object looks like, whether it could be used to strike someone, and whether its parts could injure a person or damage property.

The risk comes from several features that often appear on replicas:
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors- Large claws, spikes, teeth or pointed trim that can cut or puncture.
- Heavy metal plates, exposed bolts or rigid frames that can cause impact injuries.
- Motors, pneumatic parts, springs, compressed-gas cartridges or other mechanisms that can move unexpectedly.
- Lights, sound modules and batteries that can activate in a bag or trigger an inspection.
- A silhouette that resembles industrial equipment or a weapon when viewed quickly or from a distance.
The safest build is a lightweight costume object with blunt, rounded surfaces and no capability to strike, launch, cut, crush or discharge anything. Remove or permanently disable functional mechanisms. A prop that can be operated as a weapon should not be worn or transported as a cosplay accessory.

Can you wear a Power Fist through TSA?
No. Do not wear a Power Fist through a TSA checkpoint. Federal aviation rules prohibit having a weapon on your person or in accessible property during screening, in a sterile area, or while boarding a screened aircraft. The rule is in 49 CFR § 1540.111. Its language about a locked, hard-sided container is written for firearms and is not blanket permission to carry a costume weapon or replica.
TSA guidance also explains that a realistic replica may be treated as a weapon. A screener can use judgment when an object looks realistic or could readily be used as a weapon. Calling it fictional, showing a convention badge or explaining that it is a costume does not remove that discretion. An item can be refused, held for further inspection or referred to law enforcement.
Do not put the replica in a backpack or carry-on and hope that a different checkpoint will interpret it differently. If you need to fly, ask the airline before departure how it wants a large cosplay prop handled, and be prepared to check it or ship it separately. Carrier policies and international requirements can be stricter than domestic rules.

How to make the replica safe to wear
Use a load-bearing restraint
Attach the replica to a harness or broad straps that keep its mass close to your torso. The restraint should stop the fist from swinging when you turn, sit, climb a step or brush past another person. A single loose shoulder strap is rarely enough for a bulky build; use a secondary stabilizing strap if the prop can rotate or pull away from your body.
Fit the harness at home while wearing the clothing and armor you will use at the event. Check that it does not restrict breathing, cut into your neck or armpit, or concentrate weight on one shoulder. Walk through narrow doorways and sit in a chair. If the fist catches on a frame, tips you off balance or prevents you from seeing your hand, redesign the attachment before attending.

Pad every contact and edge
Cover claws, spikes and corners with foam or another soft, securely attached material. Round the profile rather than adding a thin cap that can detach and leave a sharp point. Countersink or cover exposed hardware, and remove metal parts that add weight without structural value. The goal is a surface that cannot puncture skin, snag fabric or scratch a wall when the wearer moves normally.
Eliminate functional hazards
Remove projectiles, blades, sharp metal inserts, compressed-gas components and mechanisms that produce force. Disconnect motors or actuators so a switch cannot move the fist. Secure wiring and battery contacts against short circuits. If the design includes lights or sound, make the controls recessed or inaccessible while the prop is worn, and carry spare batteries separately according to the carrier’s current rules.
Preserve quick release and circulation
You must be able to remove the prop quickly if staff, a medical worker or another attendee asks. Keep buckles and release points reachable without twisting your body into a crowd. After ten to fifteen minutes of walking, check your fingers for tingling, coldness or numbness and your shoulder for pain. Stop using the prop if you lose sensation, strength or control; a costume is not worth an injury.
Control how you interact with people
Never swing, thrust or point the fist at someone, even for a photograph. Ask before touching another person’s costume or posing close to a child. Keep claws away from faces, mobility devices, service animals and crowded photo lines. If a hallway, elevator or queue becomes congested, remove the replica or secure it inside its case.
Will a convention allow a wearable Power Fist?
There is no universal convention rule. Policies commonly require lightweight, non-realistic props and an inspection or peace-bond tag, while some events prohibit hard or realistic weapon props altogether. The policy in force at the specific event, venue and city controls your entry.

Examples of how policies differ
| Event policy | What it means for a Power Fist |
|---|---|
| E3 | Hard prop weapons, including props made of metal, fiberglass and glass, are forbidden. Props are allowed when composed of cardboard, foam, wood or other light materials. Items resembling weapons are reviewed, and unsafe items may be confiscated. Prop firearms must not be mistaken for real weapons. |
| Windycon | No prop may be used in a dangerous or threatening manner. Attendees may not draw blades or point projectile weapons; anything used as a weapon is treated as a weapon. Realistic gun props are not allowed. Other firearm props must go to Operations for peace bonding, and the wearer is responsible for damage. |
These examples show why a wearable build can pass one event and fail another. A Power Fist with a metal frame may be rejected under an E3-style hard-prop ban even if it has no sharp edge. A soft, oversized foam build may be accepted after inspection at another event but still be tagged, stored or refused if staff decide it is unsafe.

Check rules before you leave home
- Read the current convention weapons and props page, the host venue’s rules, the official hotel policy and any local transit restrictions.
- Look for requirements on materials, dimensions, moving parts, lights, batteries, peace bonding, inspection hours and storage.
- Email the cosplay or security desk photographs, overall dimensions and a short description of materials if the wording is unclear. Keep the written response with your travel documents.
- Bring the replica in an opaque bag or case. Do not reveal it in a lobby, parking lot or public street; uncover it only at the designated inspection point.
- Follow the staff decision. Accept tagging, peace bonding, temporary storage or refusal without arguing. A venue can confiscate an unsafe item or deny entry under its policy.
How to carry it inside a convention
Use the shortest, least exposed route
Move from the inspection desk to your room, changing area or photo location without detours. Keep the fist close to your body and your hand away from triggers, switches or release levers. In elevators, escalators, stairwells and queues, hold the prop so its widest points face inward rather than toward other passengers.
Keep it covered between approved uses
Use an opaque cover whenever you leave the convention floor, cross a hotel lobby or walk to a vehicle. Open-carrying a weapon-shaped object can alarm bystanders and attract a police response even when the prop is legal at the event. Do not display it on public streets or in a restaurant unless the property owner has expressly allowed it.
Do not wear it while driving or using transit
A large forearm prop can block steering, snag a seat belt or prevent an airbag from working correctly. Remove it before driving. For rail, bus and rideshare trips, keep it inside its case and check the operator’s rules; the convention’s approval does not bind a transit company.
How to pack a Power Fist for air travel
Air travel involves two separate rule sets. TSA security rules govern access to checkpoints and sterile areas. FAA dangerous-goods rules govern hazards such as batteries, compressed gas and other materials. FAA’s PackSafe guidance says the two systems are separate and warns that an item not listed there is not automatically allowed in baggage. Individual airlines and international authorities may impose additional restrictions.

Prepare the replica before packing
- Remove batteries, fuel, compressed-gas parts, detachable blades and heavy pieces that could break loose.
- Protect terminals and pack batteries according to the airline’s current instructions; do not leave a battery connected to a switch that can activate.
- Lock or tape moving parts in a non-damaging way so an inspector can release them without cutting through the prop.
- Photograph the packed interior and the disconnected components. The images help you explain the contents during inspection and reassemble the costume later.
Choose a case that contains the risk
A padded, rigid-sided case is preferable to a soft shopping bag. It should be long and wide enough that claws do not press against the shell, with foam or other cushioning around the fist and a divider for detached parts. The lid should close securely without compressing switches or fragile armor. Immobilization matters more than appearance: the prop should not shift, activate or injure an inspector when the case is moved.
Keep the case closed and inaccessible during travel. If the airline permits an exterior label, identify it plainly as a cosplay prop rather than using a dramatic weapon name. Do not attach a label that implies the container holds a real weapon or hazardous device.
Ask the carrier before departure
Contact the operating airline, not only a booking agency, and describe the object accurately: its dimensions, materials, batteries, moving parts and whether it can cause impact or puncture. Ask whether it must be checked, declared at the counter or shipped separately. Request the answer in writing. A previous trip, a different airport or a different employee’s advice does not guarantee acceptance on the next flight.
At the airport, do not open the case in a public area unless an employee directs you to do so. Allow extra time for inspection. If the airline or security staff refuse the item, do not attempt to bypass the decision by repacking it as ordinary clothing.
Ground transport between home, hotel and event
| Travel stage | Safer practice | Common failure |
|---|---|---|
| Home to vehicle | Keep the replica inside its closed case before leaving the building; load it directly into the vehicle’s secure cargo area. | Walking to the car with an uncovered weapon-shaped prop and alarming neighbors. |
| Driving | Store the case where it cannot slide into the passenger area or interfere with controls. Remove the wearable harness. | Wearing the fist, placing it on the driver’s lap or letting a claw obstruct a seat belt. |
| Parking lot to venue | Use the shortest route with the case closed. Follow staff instructions for a designated prop entrance. | Displaying the replica while crossing a public street or queuing outside. |
| Hotel movement | Cover it in elevators, hallways and common areas; ask the hotel about storage and display restrictions. | Leaving it on a luggage cart, in a lobby photo or unattended in a room with a door open. |
| Rail, bus or rideshare | Keep it in a closed case and check the operator’s weapons and oversized-baggage rules in advance. | Assuming a convention badge overrides the carrier’s policy. |
Local law and staff directions control at your destination. An officer or property manager may not know the character or event policy and may order you to cover, surrender or remove the prop. Comply first; resolve a disagreement later through the venue’s formal process.
Best Value
Inspection, peace bonding and refusal
What to expect at inspection
Staff may examine materials, edges, mechanisms, straps, lights and the way the prop is worn. They may ask you to demonstrate that it cannot fire, swing freely or injure someone. Keep the case accessible, remove other belongings from the inspection area and answer questions plainly.
What a peace-bond tag does and does not do
A tag, zip tie or other peace-bond device indicates that the venue has inspected the prop under its rules. It does not make the replica legal in an airport, on a train, in a hotel or on a public sidewalk. Do not cut or remove the bond until staff authorize it, and do not treat the tag as permission to swing, point or threaten with the item.
If staff reject the replica
Ask whether you may return it to your vehicle, place it in venue storage or modify it. If none is available, leave it behind. Do not conceal it, pass it to another attendee or argue that a similar prop was admitted earlier. A refusal protects the event and its attendees from an avoidable incident.

- Edges, claws and spikes are rounded and padded; hardware cannot snag or puncture.
- The harness keeps the prop close to your body and has a reachable quick release.
- You tested walking, sitting, turning, stairs and doorways without pain, numbness or loss of control.
- Batteries and detachable parts are removed or secured under the carrier’s current rules.
- The convention, venue, hotel and transport policies are current, and you have written clarification if needed.
- The replica fits a padded rigid case that closes securely and prevents movement.
- You have a plan to store or abandon the prop if inspection staff refuse it.
- You will keep it covered outside approved areas and will not wear it while driving, boarding transit or entering airport screening.
What to do if something goes wrong
The prop snags or someone is hurt
Stop moving, set the replica down if safe and notify event staff or emergency services. Do not pull a spike or broken piece out of an injury. After the incident, remove the faulty part and do not wear the prop again until the attachment and padding have been repaired.
An airport employee asks to inspect or remove it
Follow the employee’s instructions and do not reach suddenly toward the case. Explain that it is a cosplay replica only when asked, then accept the screening decision. If the airline will not carry it, arrange shipment or leave it behind rather than attempting to take it through another checkpoint.
Police or venue security respond to a report
Keep your hands visible, place the prop on the ground only when instructed and identify yourself calmly. Do not run, pose, activate lights or sounds, or make jokes about weapons. The fact that the prop is fictional does not change how a responder must assess a possible threat.
Bottom line for wearing and transporting a Power Fist
Build and wear the replica like a controlled piece of stage equipment: soft or rounded, non-functional, restrained and removable. Get the destination’s approval before traveling, present it covered for inspection, and accept any tag, storage requirement or refusal. For air travel, never wear it through TSA; ask the operating airline about checked transport or separate shipment, pack it immobilized in a padded rigid case, and handle batteries and other components under current carrier and FAA requirements. Between locations, keep it covered and secured. These steps reduce injury, alarm and denied-entry risks without assuming that one venue’s permission applies anywhere else.
