How to Waterproof a Backpack and Protect Electronics from Rain

Use layered protection for rainy trips: a fitted rain cover, a liner for the main compartment, and a separate case or dry sack for vulnerable electronics.

The most reliable way to protect a backpack and its electronics from rain is to use layers: a properly fitted rain cover outside, a liner for the main compartment, and a separate dry sack or waterproof case for high-value devices. A water-resistant fabric alone does not make a whole pack waterproof; seams, zippers, pockets, and openings can still let water in.

Why a water-resistant backpack can still get wet inside

A fabric may shed water while the backpack as a whole remains vulnerable. Water can enter through seams, zippers, pockets, and other access points, so a waterproof-sounding material description is not proof of sealed construction. REI explains these limits in its backpack guidance.

Think of protection by area: a rain cover shields the outside, a liner protects the main load, and a small dry sack or purpose-built case isolates an item that would be costly or difficult to replace. None should be treated as a guarantee against every storm or exposure.

How to waterproof a backpack for rainy conditions

1. Check the pack and its care instructions

Look at the fabric, construction, seams, closures, and whether the pack includes a cover. Before cleaning the pack, repairing seams, or applying a water-repellent treatment, follow the manufacturer’s care directions. Materials and coatings vary, so a treatment suitable for one pack may not be suitable for another.

MIYCOO Ultralight Packable Backpack, 35L Water-Resistant Hiking Daypack
  • Lightweight: The lightweight packable backpack is about half the weight of a mobile phone, being folded into its inner pocket for storage and easy to open when needed. Unfolded size: 12.5 x 8.5 x 20.9 inches, folded size is only 4.5 x 3.9 x 7.8 inches
  • Water-Resistant & Durability: The water-resistant backpack is made of water-resistant fabric, IPX4: This rating offers protection against splashes of water, making them suitable for workouts or light rain. Heavy duty upgraded zippers and enhanced major stress points provide long-lasting durability against daily activities
  • Large Capacity & Multiple Compartments: Hiking backpack with 35L capacity and 3 compartments. The carry on backpack featured a wet compartment for separating dry and wet items
  • Anti-Theft Zipper Clips & Survival Whistle: Securing two or more zipper pulls together prevents the zipper from opening accidentally or being opened by others. For added safety, the shoulder strap is equipped with a survival whistle for use in dangerous outdoor situations
  • Tips: Before traveling, you can put this collapsible bag in your pocket or suitcase, and when you buy more goods on the way, this large-capacity foldable airplane backpack will show its value

2. Fit an outer rain cover

Choose a cover intended for your pack’s capacity and shape. Check that it reaches around the top and sides and stays in place; a loose or poorly fitted cover can leave areas exposed. For one model-specific example, Osprey lists its Medium Ultralight Raincover for 30–50 L packs, with taped seams and a drawcord. That fit range applies to that product, not to rain covers generally; see Osprey’s product listing and care guidance.

A cover is an exterior shield, not a sealed bag. Openings may remain exposed, and wind or the shape of a loaded pack can affect coverage. Keep essential gear protected inside the pack, too.

3. Line the main compartment

Put a suitable pack liner or bag inside the main compartment so the contents have a barrier if the outer fabric gets soaked. Close it securely according to its design, and keep items you need while walking accessible without leaving the liner open longer than necessary. A liner protects the main load; it does not necessarily protect external pockets or gear attached outside.

4. Add a separate barrier for electronics

Place a phone, camera, power bank, or other high-consequence device in its own dry sack or a purpose-built waterproof electronics case, then put that inside the lined pack. Match the case to the device’s dimensions and the expected exposure. “Water-resistant,” “waterproof,” and “submersible” are not interchangeable claims.

For example, Osprey describes its Ultralight 20 Dry Sack w/Window as a 20 L, IPX5-rated, waterproof non-submersible sack. That product description does not establish protection during immersion. Check the current maker documentation for any case or sack you plan to rely on; see Osprey’s product listing. REI also discusses dry bags and waterproof gadget cases for phones and cameras in its electronics protection guidance.

Should you use a pack liner or dry bags?

Option What it protects Best use Key limitation
Rain cover The exposed outside of the pack Shielding the pack from rain when the cover fits its capacity and shape Does not close every opening or guarantee a dry interior; coverage can be affected by fit and wind.
Pack liner The main compartment and its contents Keeping the main load dry if water gets through the pack exterior Does not automatically protect outer pockets or equipment carried outside.
Dry sack Items placed inside that sack Separating vulnerable gear, such as electronics, from the rest of the load Protection depends on the specific closure, construction, and product rating; non-submersible does not mean immersion-safe.
Waterproof electronics case A device sized to fit the case Protecting a phone or camera when its own barrier is useful Check the exact model’s fit and exposure rating; do not assume all pouches provide the same protection.

These options work at different scales rather than replacing one another. A cover helps shield the pack, a liner covers the main compartment, and a case or dry sack gives a critical item an additional barrier. Choose based on what must stay dry, the expected exposure, and how much weight, bulk, and access inconvenience you can accept.

Does DWR make a backpack waterproof?

No. Durable water repellent (DWR) is a surface finish that encourages water to bead and roll off fabric. Dirt, oils, and abrasion can reduce that effect, but DWR does not seal seams, zippers, or openings and does not turn an unsealed backpack into a fully waterproof bag.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

REI’s DWR cleaning and reapplication instructions concern rainwear, not every backpack fabric or coating. Use a treatment on a pack only if its manufacturer says it is suitable, and follow the pack’s care guidance. See REI’s rainwear cleaning guidance and REI’s explanation of DWR.

How to dry a backpack and electronics after rain

  1. When you are out of the rain, remove the cover and empty the pack.
  2. Separate the pack, cover, liner, dry sacks, and contents so damp items are not trapped together.
  3. Let every item dry completely before storing it. Follow the pack and device makers’ instructions for safe drying and care.
  4. Do not put away the rain cover while it is damp. Osprey specifically advises allowing its cover to dry entirely after rain to help prevent mildew.

REI’s guidance also stresses drying gear thoroughly after a trip: REI on keeping electronics dry.
