What financial information should you keep out of an AI chat?
Do not enter passwords, one-time verification codes, full bank or card numbers, Social Security numbers, or unredacted statements unless you have confirmed the provider, the purpose, how the information will be handled, and why it is necessary. For many questions, you can describe the situation with rounded figures and remove names, account identifiers, addresses, and transaction details.

This caution applies to uploads and conversation history as well as the text you type. The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB) says chatbot logs may contain sensitive personal and financial information and should be protected accordingly. Its 2023 report also identifies privacy and data-security risks in consumer finance chatbots. Read the CFPB report on chatbots in consumer finance.
Share the minimum needed to get useful help
- Ask a general question without identifying yourself or an account.
- Use approximate amounts or categories when exact figures are unnecessary.
- Before uploading a document, redact identifying details and unrelated transactions.
- Do not share login details or verification codes to let a chatbot “check” an account.
The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) describes data minimization—collecting only what is needed—as part of a sound security plan, alongside protecting data and disposing of it securely. See the FTC’s privacy and security guidance.

What to check before connecting a financial account
A connection to a bank, brokerage, or other financial account can expose more information than a single prompt. Before approving it, look for clear answers to these questions. If the terms do not explain them, do not assume the connection is limited or that you can easily undo it.
- Scope: What account data and history will the service access? Can you choose specific accounts, data types, or a time period?
- Purpose: How will the information be used? Could prompts or connected data be used to improve the service or shared with other parties?
- Recipients: Which providers or other third parties receive the data, and what roles do they play?
- Retention and deletion: How long is information kept, and what happens when you delete a chat, disconnect an account, or close the service?
- Access and revocation: How can you review or withdraw permission, both through the AI service and through your financial institution?
- Accuracy and disputes: Who can correct inaccurate data or help resolve unauthorized access, errors, or a complaint?
- Security and support: What protections are explained, and is there a human support channel for problems?
These questions align with consumer-authorized data-sharing principles the CFPB outlined, including consumer control, transparency, informed consent, security, data accuracy, accountability, and dispute resolution. They are useful criteria for evaluating a connection, not a guarantee that every service offers the same controls. Read the CFPB’s data-sharing principles.

How to check that the AI service is legitimate
Reach the provider’s official website or app independently rather than following an unexpected message or search ad. Check the domain or app publisher before signing in or granting access. If a chatbot unexpectedly asks for credentials, a verification code, payment, or sensitive information, stop and confirm through a known official channel, such as the institution’s app or the phone number on your card or statement.

Verifying the service and channel before sharing information is a practical way to reduce that risk; a familiar-looking chatbot or logo alone does not establish that it is genuine. How to handle advice that could affect your money
AI responses can be inaccurate, and a confident tone is not evidence that an answer is correct. Verify consequential claims against primary sources—such as your financial institution’s official fee schedule, account agreement, or regulator guidance—or consult a qualified human adviser. Do not rely on a chatbot alone to decide what to do about a disputed transaction, an urgent account problem, or a complex financial matter.
The CFPB says chatbot effectiveness can decline on complex problems and identifies inaccurate answers and privacy and security risks. In its 2023 report, it advised financial institutions not to use chatbots as the primary way to interact with people when it is reasonably clear the chatbot cannot meet their needs. That advice is directed to financial institutions; it is not a certification of AI advisors or a rule that applies to every standalone AI tool. See the CFPB report.

What to do after granting access—or if something seems wrong
- Keep a record. Save the relevant privacy terms and note which accounts and permissions you approved.
- Review the connection. Check the AI provider’s account settings and your financial institution’s connected-app or authorized-access controls, if available.
- Revoke access where possible. Disconnect the account through the provider and revoke the authorization through your financial institution when those controls are available. The process differs by service.
- Contact the institution through a verified channel. If you suspect unauthorized access, exposed credentials, or a financial error, use the official app, website, or contact details on your card or statement.
- Change affected credentials. If you shared a password or code, act through the institution’s official channel to secure the account; never send another code to an unexpected chatbot.
Revoking an account connection may not by itself delete information already retained by a provider. Check the service’s deletion terms and follow its stated process; the sources do not establish identical deletion or revocation tools across providers.
How U.S. privacy rules fit—and where they do not
Do not assume that every general-purpose AI chatbot is legally treated as a financial institution. The FTC’s Gramm-Leach-Bliley Act (GLBA) guidance describes privacy and safeguarding obligations for covered financial institutions, including disclosures about information-sharing practices and protections for sensitive information. Whether a particular entity or activity is covered depends on the facts and applicable law. Read the FTC’s GLBA privacy-rule compliance guide.
