For most people, the iPad Air M2 is the better-value starting point for school, notes, browsing, media and everyday work. Choose the iPad Pro M4 if its OLED display and ProMotion matter to you, or you need a specific Pro feature such as Thunderbolt/USB 4, Face ID or four-speaker audio. Compare the same screen size and account for storage and accessories before deciding.
Which iPad should you buy?
- Choose the iPad Air M2 if you want a capable tablet for general use and would rather spend less on the device. It comes in 11-inch and 13-inch sizes, and its starting storage in Apple’s comparison is 128GB.
- Choose the iPad Pro M4 if display quality is central to your use, or you specifically need ProMotion, Thunderbolt/USB 4, Face ID or four-speaker audio. Its starting storage in Apple’s comparison is 256GB.
- Consider the 13-inch Air if you want a larger work or drawing surface but do not need the Pro display and other Pro-specific features.
This recommendation follows the feature and historical launch-price differences Apple publishes; it is not based on independent performance testing.

Is the iPad Pro worth it over the iPad Air?
When the display makes the Pro worthwhile
The M4 Pro’s tandem OLED panel and ProMotion are its most visible advantages. They matter if you regularly view HDR content, value a higher-refresh display, or do visual work where the screen is a priority. The Air’s Liquid Retina display supports P3, but it does not have ProMotion.
When the Pro’s connections and extras matter
Thunderbolt/USB 4 makes the Pro the model to consider if your workflow depends on that connection. Face ID and four-speaker audio may also be decisive preferences. If those features do not solve a specific need, the Air’s USB-C, Touch ID and landscape stereo speakers may be sufficient.

Chip specifications are not a real-world speed test
Apple lists M4 with up to a 10-core CPU and 10-core GPU in the Pro, and M2 with an 8-core CPU and 9-core GPU in the Air. Those specifications show a higher-tier configuration in the Pro, but they do not by themselves establish how much faster it will feel for a particular app or task.
What did the models cost at launch?
Apple’s May 2024 U.S. launch announcement listed these starting prices. They are historical launch prices, not current October 2026 street prices or a claim about present availability.

What should you check before buying?
- Choose a screen size. Compare 11-inch with 11-inch or 13-inch with 13-inch unless you have a reason to trade display area for a different price or portability.
- Pick a storage capacity. The entry configurations differ, so compare the capacity you actually intend to buy rather than just the family starting prices.
- Decide whether you need cellular. Wi-Fi and Wi-Fi + Cellular had distinct U.S. launch prices; confirm the connectivity shown on the current listing.
- Price accessories separately. Apple lists Pencil Pro and Apple Pencil (USB-C) compatibility for both families, but they are optional purchases. Choose the Magic Keyboard made for the exact iPad family and size; do not assume the Air and Pro keyboards are interchangeable.
Apple’s May 2024 announcement listed U.S. launch prices of $129 for Apple Pencil Pro, $79 for Apple Pencil (USB-C), and $299/$349 for 11-/13-inch Magic Keyboards for both families. These are historical accessory prices, not verified current prices. Confirm compatibility and current cost before adding accessories to your budget.

Yes. Apple’s iPadOS 26 feature document includes the 11-inch and 13-inch iPad Pro (M4) and iPad Air (M2) among the devices supported for the features it describes. That establishes compatibility with those listed features; it does not guarantee a particular number of future software-support years.
