You can watch live TV on a smart TV through cable equipment, an antenna, or compatible streaming apps. The right route depends on the channels you want, what your TV supports, whether service is available where you live, and whether you want a subscription.

How can I watch live TV on my smart TV?

Choose one of three ways to bring live channels to the screen:

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

  • Cable: Connect your provider’s equipment to a compatible TV input, or use the provider’s app if it supports your TV.
  • Antenna: Connect an appropriate antenna to the TV’s digital tuner to receive available over-the-air broadcasts.
  • Apps: Use live channels integrated into the TV platform or install a compatible live-TV app. Some options are free; others require a subscription.

A smart-TV operating system does not itself include a cable subscription or guarantee access to every app or channel. Compatibility and availability vary by TV, platform, provider, and region.

Watching cable TV on a smart TV

If you have cable service, connect the cable box to a compatible input on the TV and select that input. The exact setup and input name depend on your TV and cable equipment, so follow the instructions for those specific models. If your cable provider offers an app for your TV, you may be able to watch through that app instead.

Some Google TV devices also support TV through cable service, satellite, a TV tuner, or an antenna in Basic Mode, but feature availability depends on the device. Google’s Basic Mode guidance describes those options.

Getting local channels with an antenna

To receive over-the-air broadcasts, you need a digital TV with an appropriate antenna connected to it. Reception depends on your location, so check which stations are available at your address before choosing equipment. As the FCC’s antenna guidance puts it, “Depending on your location, this could be either an outdoor rooftop antenna or an indoor antenna.” That guidance supports the choice between indoor and rooftop antennas; it does not establish that a particular model or range will receive a given station everywhere.

  • Easy to Install: Plug the coaxial cable from your digital indoor HDTV antenna into the ANT/IN connector on the back of your TV, point the TV antenna toward your local TV tower and scan for channels. (Check "dtv gov maps" for available channels).

The FCC’s consumer document dates to 2010. It notes that full-power stations were required to stop analog broadcasts by June 12, 2009, and that an analog-only TV needs a digital-to-analog converter box to receive digital over-the-air signals. A modern digital TV does not need that converter for this purpose. If you are considering an indoor TV antenna, first check local reception and whether an indoor antenna suits your location and installation needs.

Watching live TV through apps

App choices depend on your TV platform, region, and the service’s current support. On Google TV in the US, Google says Freeplay offers live channels at no charge without installing an app, creating an account, or subscribing, provided the TV has current Google TV software. Google names Xumo and Scripps as content providers. Availability and channel integration can vary by country and partner.

Google also lists Haystack News, Plex, Pluto TV, and Tubi as apps with free live-TV channels; those apps must be installed. YouTube TV, Sling TV, and Philo are listed as paid subscription options for Google TV. These examples are not a universal smart-TV channel list. Check whether each app supports your specific TV and region, and confirm the current lineup and price directly with the provider before subscribing. See Google TV’s live-TV channel information.

How to choose among cable, antenna, and apps

Option What to check Cost and setup
Cable Whether your provider serves your area and carries the channels you want; whether the TV input or provider app is compatible. Requires cable service. Connect compatible provider equipment or use a supported app; exact setup varies.
Antenna Which stations are receivable at your address and whether your TV has a digital tuner and antenna connection. Receives over-the-air broadcasts; antenna type depends on location and installation needs. An analog-only set needs a converter box for digital broadcasts under the FCC’s 2010 guidance.
Apps Whether the app or integrated channel feature is available on your TV and in your region, and whether it carries the channels you want. Some options are free; paid services require subscriptions. Other providers’ apps must be installed where supported.

No one route guarantees a particular local station, sports channel, or news lineup. Verify channels and local availability before buying an antenna or signing up for a service. For streaming, check the service’s current price as well as its channel list.

Do you need another streaming device?

Not necessarily. First check whether your TV already supports the live-TV app or platform feature you want. If it does not, a compatible external device may be an option: Google says its Google TV Streamer (4K) connects over HDMI and supports services including live TV. It is a possible alternative for an unsupported TV app, not a requirement for every smart-TV owner.
