If it is rechargeable, use the cable and power source specified for its exact model. If it takes non-rechargeable cells, replace them as directed instead of trying to charge the keyboard.
Identify how your keyboard gets power
Look for the model number and charging instructions on the keyboard’s underside, packaging, or manufacturer support page. The port and battery type determine what to do next; wireless keyboards do not all use the same charging method.
- Built-in rechargeable battery: Find the charging port and use the supplied cable if available.
- Removable batteries: Check the manual for the required battery type and orientation. Do not assume the cells are rechargeable.
Charge a keyboard with a built-in battery
- Confirm the keyboard model and identify its port. For example, Apple documents USB-C or Lightning connectors for supported Magic Keyboards, while Logitech’s K830 uses Micro-USB. These are model-specific examples, not interchangeable or universal standards. Apple’s Magic Keyboard instructions and Logitech’s K830 instructions explain their respective models.
- Connect the matching cable to the keyboard. Use the included cable when possible; otherwise, choose a cable that matches the connector and the manufacturer’s specifications. Logitech advises using the supplied cable or one with matching specifications in its wireless-device charging recommendations.
- Connect the USB end to a power source supported by the manufacturer. Logitech recommends trying a direct computer USB port for its rechargeable-device troubleshooting. Do not infer a suitable voltage or current from another keyboard model.
- Check the model’s manual or support page to confirm that charging is underway and to find its battery-status method. Indicator lights and status menus vary by model.
Check charging status and use the keyboard
Use the manufacturer’s instructions rather than assuming a particular light color or behavior applies to every keyboard. Logitech says the K830’s light blinks green while charging, glows green when charged, and blinks red when the battery is low; the keyboard can be used while charging. Apple says the charge level of a supported Magic Keyboard can be checked in Bluetooth settings and that the keyboard can be used while charging.
Battery life and charging time also depend on the model and how it is used. For the K830 specifically, Logitech says a three-hour charge provides up to 10 days of use when typing about two hours per day with the backlight on, or about one year without the backlight. Logitech notes that usage patterns affect runtime; these figures are not general estimates for wireless keyboards. See Logitech’s K830 details.

Troubleshoot a keyboard that will not charge
- Check that the cable is fully seated at both ends and that you are using the keyboard’s actual charging port.
- Try another compatible cable. Logitech recommends this for applicable rechargeable devices; avoid an unverified cable or power specification.
- If the manufacturer recommends it, connect directly to a computer USB port rather than through a hub, and try a different USB port. Logitech’s keyboard power and charging troubleshooting guide includes these checks and advises trying another Micro-USB cable for applicable devices.
- Consult the exact model’s support instructions if the keyboard still does not show a charge or respond. The correct indicator and further troubleshooting steps are model-specific.
If the keyboard uses replaceable batteries
Install new cells of the type specified in the model’s instructions, observing the marked orientation. Some wireless keyboards have removable batteries rather than a built-in rechargeable battery; Apple’s support guidance notes that earlier wireless keyboards may use removable batteries. Follow the model’s battery-installation instructions rather than attempting to charge the keyboard. Apple’s battery guidance covers its keyboard models.
