You can watch Freely without an aerial: it streams live channels and on-demand content over home broadband. Use a Freely-enabled TV or connect a Freely streaming device to an existing TV’s HDMI port, then connect it to the internet over Wi-Fi or Ethernet. Freely recommends a connection of at least 10 Mbps for viewing; that is its guidance, not an independently measured minimum. Freely says it works with Wi-Fi and does not need an aerial.
What you need to watch Freely without an aerial
- A Freely-enabled television, or an existing TV with an available HDMI port and a compatible Freely streaming device.
- A working home broadband connection. Freely supports Wi-Fi and Ethernet and recommends at least 10 Mbps for live streaming and on-demand viewing. Check Freely’s broadband guidance.
- A TV Licence if your viewing circumstances require one. Freely says a licence is needed to watch or record live TV and to use BBC iPlayer; check TV Licensing for the rules that apply to you.
An aerial is not a substitute for broadband on the internet-streaming route. If your broadband is down or too slow, Freely’s streamed channels may not work reliably. An aerial can still be useful with a supported TV for receiving additional aerial channels or as a backup, but it is optional for Freely over the internet.

Choose your Freely hardware
| Route | Best suited to | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Freely-enabled TV | Someone buying a TV with Freely built in. | Confirm that the exact TV model supports Freely. An aerial is optional for internet-delivered Freely. |
| Freely streaming device | Someone keeping an existing TV. | The TV needs an available HDMI port. Confirm the device model is compatible and check current stock and price with the retailer. |
Freely names the Netgem PLEIO and Manhattan Aero as examples of Freely streaming devices in an article dated 19 February 2026. These are examples, not a guarantee of current availability or compatibility with every TV. Freely’s device article describes more than 70 channels available to stream; that is Freely’s own figure and channel line-ups can change. Check Freely’s current device information.
Set up Freely without connecting an aerial
- Check the hardware. On a Freely-enabled TV, use its built-in service. For an existing TV, make sure there is an unused HDMI port and follow the specific streaming device’s instructions to plug it in. Freely explains the two hardware routes in its product guidance.
- Connect to your router. Choose Wi-Fi or Ethernet. If using Ethernet, Freely recommends connecting the cable before setup; the device should connect automatically. For Wi-Fi, select your network during startup and enter its password.
- Complete the on-screen setup. Follow the prompts. Depending on the TV or device, these can ask for language, location, postcode or region, an internet connection, and a channel scan.
- Open the Freely guide. Select a live channel to stream. For on-demand programmes, open the relevant broadcaster app and sign in if asked. Freely’s setup guidance names BBC iPlayer, ITVX, Channel 4, 5 and U as examples of players that may require individual sign-in. See Freely’s setup help.
Do you need an aerial for on-demand viewing?
No, not for Freely’s internet-delivered content, provided your compatible TV or device has broadband access. Some on-demand programmes open in a broadcaster’s app rather than playing directly in Freely, and that app may ask you to sign in. An aerial does not replace that internet connection.

Fix buffering or a failed connection
- Check the broadband connection. Run a speed test and check Wi-Fi signal strength. Freely recommends at least 10 Mbps; actual performance can also be affected by signal quality and other activity on the connection.
- See whether other devices are online. If phones or other devices also cannot access the internet, check the router or contact your broadband provider.
- Check the TV or device settings. If other devices work but Freely does not, reconnect to Wi-Fi or check the Ethernet connection in the TV or device’s network settings.
- Update the device software. Freely’s troubleshooting advice includes keeping software current. Follow the update instructions for your TV or streaming device. Freely troubleshooting help.
