To calculate Bitcoin’s return after fees, taxes, and inflation, first subtract eligible trading costs from what you receive, compare that net amount with your total purchase outlay, then account separately for any tax actually attributable to the sale and the change in purchasing power. These are distinct calculations: investment return is not the same as taxable gain. The tax guidance below is specific to U.S. federal rules; readers elsewhere should use their jurisdiction’s rules.
Start with the return you want to measure
For one purchase followed by one sale, use the transaction’s actual dollar amounts and fees. The following is a transparent performance convention, not an IRS-prescribed investment-return formula:
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
- Total acquisition outlay = purchase cost + qualifying acquisition fees included in basis.
- Net sale proceeds = sale proceeds − eligible selling costs.
- Pretax net profit = net sale proceeds − total acquisition outlay.
- Simple holding-period return = pretax net profit ÷ total acquisition outlay.
Multiply the return by 100 to express it as a percentage. A negative result is a loss over the period. State the purchase and sale dates and whether the figure covers the full holding period; do not describe a holding-period return as annualized.

Example: one purchase and one sale
Suppose you pay $1,000 for Bitcoin and $10 in qualifying purchase fees. Later, you sell it for $1,300 and pay $15 in eligible selling costs. Total acquisition outlay is $1,010; net sale proceeds are $1,285; pretax net profit is $275. The simple holding-period return is $275 ÷ $1,010, or about 27.2%.

- BITCOIN EXCLUSIVE, PHONE VERIFICATION: Bitkey is designed from the ground up exclusively for bitcoin — a dedicated hardware wallet for secure bitcoin storage. Approve transactions with a tap using your phone and NFC. No device screen is required.
- SELF-CUSTODY, NO EXCHANGE OR CUSTODIAN REQUIRED: You hold two of the three keys in the Bitkey system – one on your phone and one on your Bitkey device. The third is stored on Bitkey’s server and cannot move your bitcoin on its own.
- NO SEED PHRASE: Set up and use Bitkey without creating or storing a seed phrase.
- 2-of-3 MULTISIG: Three keys are stored separately across your phone, Bitkey device, and Bitkey’s server. Any two keys are required to move your bitcoin.
- BUILT-IN RECOVERY: Encrypted backup and recovery tools can help you regain access if you lose your phone or Bitkey device. You can also designate a Recovery Contact.
This example is arithmetic only. Whether a particular fee belongs in tax basis or reduces amount realized depends on the transaction and applicable tax rules.
Annualized return is a separate measure
For a single starting outlay and a single ending value, annualized compound return can be calculated as (ending value ÷ starting value)^(1 ÷ years held) − 1. Label it annualized and give the dates and duration used. Recurring purchases or other cash flows require a cash-flow-aware method; state which method you use rather than applying the single-purchase formula to the whole account.
Include fees that belong to the purchase or sale
For U.S. federal tax purposes, IRS guidance treats qualifying costs paid for services that effect a purchase as part of basis, and qualifying costs allocable to a sale as reductions to amount realized. The IRS describes transaction costs as service costs such as commissions, transaction fees, gas fees, and transfer taxes. It excludes costs to move assets between accounts or wallets you own from that definition. See the IRS FAQs on digital asset transactions, including FAQs 55 and 56.

Do not automatically count every custody, network, or movement charge as a deductible transaction cost. Identify what service the fee paid for and whether it is allocable to the actual purchase or disposition. For an investment-performance calculation, disclose which fees you included and why; consistent fee treatment is necessary for meaningful comparisons.
Separate investment return from U.S. taxable gain
The IRS treats digital assets as property and applies general property tax principles. For a sale of digital assets for U.S. dollars, the IRS states: “Your gain or loss on the sale of your digital assets for U.S. dollars or similar currency will be the difference between your adjusted basis in the digital assets and your ‘amount realized’ on the sale.” — Internal Revenue Service, FAQ 52, Frequently asked questions on digital asset transactions.
In this tax calculation, amount realized includes cash and the fair market value of services received to effect the sale, reduced by eligible digital-asset transaction costs. Basis for a cash purchase includes the cash paid for the asset and cash paid for services that effect the purchase. That tax computation is not interchangeable with the performance calculation: a return compares investment outlay with value received, while taxable gain uses adjusted basis and amount realized under IRS rules.

Your after-tax investment return also cannot be determined by applying one generic tax percentage. If you know the actual tax attributable to the disposition, the simple one-purchase calculation is:
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute- After-tax proceeds = net sale proceeds − actual tax attributable to the disposition.
- After-tax return = (after-tax proceeds − total acquisition outlay) ÷ total acquisition outlay.
Use an actual tax amount appropriate to your circumstances and filing year. If it is not known, report pretax return rather than presenting an assumed rate as the reader’s after-tax result.
Holding period affects character, not a universal tax rate
The IRS says the holding period starts the day after acquisition and ends on the date of sale or exchange. A digital asset held for one year or less has short-term gain or loss treatment; a holding period greater than one year is long-term. This distinction does not by itself determine the tax due. Taxpayer circumstances, transaction character, and current law matter. See the IRS digital asset FAQs for holding-period guidance.

Adjust for inflation using a common dollar year
Inflation adjustment expresses values in the purchasing power of a chosen year; it does not change Bitcoin’s nominal price or calculate tax. To express an ending value in the starting year’s dollars, use:
Inflation-adjusted ending value = ending nominal value × (CPI in starting year ÷ CPI in ending year).
Then compare that adjusted ending value with the starting outlay stated in the same base-year dollars. Calculate and label nominal return and inflation-adjusted return separately. The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics CPI Inflation Calculator adjusts dollar values between years; it does not provide Bitcoin prices or calculate tax.

When precise transaction-date alignment matters, identify the CPI observations used. The BLS calculator is year-oriented, so its result may not align exactly with a Bitcoin purchase or sale date within a year. Do not call a CPI-adjusted result an “after-tax real return” unless the applicable tax amount and its timing are also incorporated.
Use transaction records for multiple buys, partial sales, or BTC-paid fees
The one-purchase example is not a reliable shortcut for an account with multiple lots, partial dispositions, recurring purchases, or fees paid in Bitcoin. Use transaction-level records and the applicable basis-identification method instead. Keep the data needed to reproduce both the tax calculation and the performance measure.
The IRS lists relevant digital-asset information including asset type, transaction date and time, number of units, U.S.-dollar fair market value at the time, and basis. Its digital assets filing guidance also says to retain records of purchases, receipts, sales, exchanges, other dispositions, and relevant fair market values. Covered broker transactions are subject to Form 1099-DA reporting from 2025, while basis reporting applies to certain transactions from 2026; broker reporting does not remove the taxpayer’s recordkeeping responsibility. Check current form instructions for the filing year.
Make comparisons reproducible
Two return figures are comparable only when they use consistent inputs and conventions. Record the following alongside your result:
- Start and end dates, including the Bitcoin valuation timestamps.
- Transaction and valuation currency.
- Fees included and the evidence for those fees.
- Tax treatment and any actual or assumed tax amount.
- Whether the figure is a total holding-period return or an annualized return.
- Whether values are nominal or inflation-adjusted, and, for an adjusted result, the CPI observations and base year.
- For transactions spread over time, the cash-flow dates and whether the method is time-weighted or cash-flow-weighted.
IRS rules, broker reporting, fee schedules, and CPI data can change. Verify them for the relevant filing year and measurement period. U.S. federal rules do not determine tax treatment in other jurisdictions.
