There is no single timeline for DC animation. The practical way to watch it is to choose a continuity first, then use release order for that continuity unless you specifically want the DCAU’s approximate in-universe chronology. The television-led DC Animated Universe (DCAU) begins with Batman: The Animated Series in 1992. The separate DC Animated Movie Universe (DCAMU) runs from Justice League: The Flashpoint Paradox (2013) through Justice League Dark: Apokolips War (2020). The reset continuity known as the Tomorrowverse starts with Superman: Man of Tomorrow (2020) and concludes with the three-part Justice League: Crisis on Infinite Earths (2024).
Films such as Batman: Under the Red Hood, Injustice and Batman: Soul of the Dragon are standalone or belong to other settings. Do not insert them into the DCAU, DCAMU or Tomorrowverse lists simply because they feature the same heroes.

Choose the continuity before choosing an order
DC’s animated catalog combines television series, theatrical-style direct-to-video films, web series, shorts and alternate-universe projects. Shared characters do not prove that two productions share a timeline. The table below identifies the three connected continuities that readers most often confuse.
Recommended Free Tools
| Continuity | Format and date span | Continuity status | Best viewing order |
|---|---|---|---|
| DCAU | Television-led shows, films, web series and shorts; 1992 onward | One broad shared continuity centered on the animated television productions | Release order for a first watch; approximate story chronology for a rewatch |
| DCAMU | Connected direct-to-video film arc; 2013–2020 | Separate from the DCAU and later reset by the Flash | Release order |
| Tomorrowverse | Connected film run; 2020–2024 | Post-DCAMU continuity that ends with the Crisis on Infinite Earths trilogy | Release order |
| Standalone and alternate projects | Individual films or separate worlds | Not part of the three lists above unless a title is explicitly identified as such | Watch each title on its own terms |
Release order preserves the way each continuity introduced its characters and ideas. Chronological order is most useful for the DCAU, where a series set in the future, such as Batman Beyond, was released alongside stories set earlier in the timeline.

What the labels mean in practice
The DCAU is television-led: its shared world grows through several series, with films, web episodes and shorts fitting around those shows. That makes it the broadest and least mechanically linear list. The DCAMU and Tomorrowverse are film-led runs designed to be watched as connected sequences. They are easier to follow as release-order marathons because each movie arrives as a chapter in a relatively compact arc.
The dates are boundaries, not a claim that every story happens in the year of release. A 2000 DCAU title can depict events in a later era, and two films released in the same year can belong to different universes. Treat the year as a sorting tool, then use the continuity label to decide whether a title belongs in the same marathon.
DCAU release order
The DCAU is the shared continuity of animated television shows and films that began with Batman: The Animated Series (1992–1995). The list below follows dated release order, including web projects and short films that are commonly included in comprehensive DCAU guides.

How to use this list
Watch each television series in its normal episode sequence, then place films and shorts at the positions shown. The DCAU list is a release-history guide, not a claim that every episode was produced in exact story sequence. The web series Lobo and Gotham Girls are brief additions rather than prerequisites for understanding the feature films, while Justice League and Justice League Unlimited form the central ensemble portion of the continuity.
For a complete release survey, keep the web series and short in the list. For a streamlined television-and-film route, you can treat Lobo, Gotham Girls and Chase Me as optional extras without pretending they belong to another universe. The important requirement is consistency: finish a series in its listed run before moving to the next dated project, rather than alternating episodes solely because two shows overlapped in broadcast years.
DCAU chronological viewing order
The following is an approximate story order. It is not a frame-perfect chronology because the DCAU sometimes uses flashbacks, time jumps and stories whose placement is deliberately flexible. It is most useful after a first release-order watch.
- Batman: The Animated Series
- Batman: Mask of the Phantasm
- Batman & Mr. Freeze: SubZero
- Superman: The Animated Series
- The New Batman Adventures
- Lobo
- Gotham Girls
- Static Shock
- Justice League
- Chase Me
- Batman: Mystery of the Batwoman
- Justice League Unlimited
- Batman and Harley Quinn
- Justice League vs. The Fatal Five
- The flashback material from Batman Beyond: Return of the Joker
- Batman Beyond
- The main events of Batman Beyond: Return of the Joker
- The Zeta Project
- The 2014 Batman Beyond short
- The Justice League Unlimited episode “Epilogue”
Why Batman Beyond appears late
Batman Beyond is set decades after Bruce Wayne’s active career in Gotham. Its future setting is why the series and Return of the Joker move toward the end of a chronological watch even though several related projects were released earlier. Return of the Joker contains historical material from an earlier period and future-day events, so splitting its flashbacks from its main story is the cleanest approximation rather than treating the film as a single point on the calendar.

Chronological viewing changes the emphasis of the franchise. You encounter the future premise only after the earlier heroes and League stories have established the world, and the “Epilogue” placement functions as a final look back. Because the guide is approximate, do not stop a season to relocate individual episodes unless you enjoy timeline reconstruction; there is no universally required episode-by-episode rearrangement.
DCAMU release order: the connected 2013–2020 film arc
The DCAMU is a separate film continuity that begins with a timeline-changing event in Justice League: The Flashpoint Paradox. Its story runs for seven years and concludes with Justice League Dark: Apokolips War, where the timeline is reset again. Release order is also the practical story order because later films assume character relationships and consequences established by earlier entries.
| # | Title | Release year |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Justice League: The Flashpoint Paradox | 2013 |
| 2 | Justice League: War | 2014 |
| 3 | Son of Batman | 2014 |
| 4 | Justice League: Throne of Atlantis | 2015 |
| 5 | Batman vs. Robin | 2015 |
| 6 | Batman: Bad Blood | 2016 |
| 7 | Justice League vs. Teen Titans | 2016 |
| 8 | Justice League Dark | 2017 |
| 9 | Teen Titans: The Judas Contract | 2017 |
| 10 | Suicide Squad: Hell to Pay | 2018 |
| 11 | The Death of Superman | 2018 |
| 12 | Constantine: City of Demons | 2018 |
| 13 | Reign of the Supermen | 2019 |
| 14 | Batman: Hush | 2019 |
| 15 | Wonder Woman: Bloodlines | 2019 |
| 16 | Justice League Dark: Apokolips War | 2020 |
Why some lists say 15 films and others say 16
DC’s 2020 enumeration described the main arc as 15 films. Later guides count Constantine: City of Demons as the sixteenth entry, producing the 16-film total used above. The difference is a counting convention, not a disagreement about the ending. If you want the broadest connected watch, include City of Demons between Suicide Squad: Hell to Pay and The Death of Superman; if you are following the original 15-film list, omit it without changing the main conclusion of the arc.
This distinction matters when comparing watch guides or a box-set checklist. A “15-film DCAMU” label generally follows DC’s original enumeration, while a “16-film” label includes the Constantine project. Neither count adds a new continuity, and neither moves Apokolips War from its 2020 endpoint.
What makes the DCAMU one story
Flashpoint Paradox establishes the altered timeline that the subsequent films inhabit. The League’s formation, Batman’s family, the Teen Titans, supernatural characters and the Superman story develop across multiple films rather than resetting after each release. Apokolips War is therefore a finale, not simply another standalone Justice League adventure.
Tomorrowverse release order: the 2020–2024 reset continuity
The Tomorrowverse follows the DCAMU’s reset but is not a continuation of the DCAU. Its ten-film run is best watched in release order.
| # | Title | Release year |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Superman: Man of Tomorrow | 2020 |
| 2 | Justice Society: World War II | 2021 |
| 3 | Batman: The Long Halloween, Part One | 2021 |
| 4 | Batman: The Long Halloween, Part Two | 2021 |
| 5 | Green Lantern: Beware My Power | 2022 |
| 6 | Legion of Super-Heroes | 2023 |
| 7 | Justice League: Warworld | 2023 |
| 8 | Justice League: Crisis on Infinite Earths – Part One | 2024 |
| 9 | Justice League: Crisis on Infinite Earths – Part Two | 2024 |
| 10 | Justice League: Crisis on Infinite Earths – Part Three | 2024 |
How the Crisis trilogy fits
The three Crisis on Infinite Earths films are a single concluding event, so watch Parts One, Two and Three consecutively and in numerical order. Do not place them before the earlier Tomorrowverse films merely because the word “Crisis” suggests a broader multiverse chronology; the release sequence supplies the intended buildup.

The Tomorrowverse is shorter than the television-led DCAU and has a clearly bounded endpoint: ten films from 2020 through 2024. That makes it a practical choice when you want a complete film-only run without adding web material or a decades-later future series. The two-part Long Halloween should remain adjacent, just as the three Crisis chapters should be treated as one finale.
Standalone and alternate-continuity films
Several prominent DC animated films should remain outside the three connected lists. Their characters, designs or premises may resemble a shared universe, but they do not provide missing chapters in the DCAU, DCAMU or Tomorrowverse.
| Title or group | How to treat it |
|---|---|
| Superman: Doomsday | Standalone animated Superman adaptation |
| Wonder Woman | Standalone animated film |
| Batman: Under the Red Hood | Standalone Batman story |
| Batman: Soul of the Dragon | Standalone period martial-arts adventure |
| Injustice | Alternate-world adaptation; keep separate from the connected film universes |
| Catwoman: Hunted | Standalone Catwoman-centered film |
| Batman: Gotham Knight | Alternate version associated with the Nolan Batman film setting, not the DCAU |
| LEGO direct-to-video productions | Separate from the theatrical LEGO Movieverse; watch as their own continuity |
There is no required order among these projects. For a character-focused marathon, group them by hero; for a release-history marathon, sort them by their individual release dates without presenting the result as one shared timeline. Batman: Gotham Knight deserves particular care because its connection is to an alternate version of the Nolan film setting, while LEGO direct-to-video titles are not interchangeable with the theatrical LEGO Movieverse.
Which order should a first-time viewer use?
If you want the classic animated television experience
Start with Batman: The Animated Series and follow the DCAU release table. This preserves the introduction of Gotham’s cast, the move into Superman’s series, the expansion to the Justice League and the later future-set material. The chronological list is better saved for a second pass because moving Batman Beyond forward changes the way its future premise is introduced.
If you want one complete superhero film story
Choose the DCAMU and watch its 16-film accounting from Justice League: The Flashpoint Paradox through Apokolips War. Include Constantine: City of Demons if you want the broader count used by later guides; omit it only if you are intentionally matching DC’s original 15-film enumeration.
If you prefer the newer animation style and a shorter run
Watch the ten Tomorrowverse films from Superman: Man of Tomorrow through Crisis on Infinite Earths – Part Three. Treat the trilogy finale as the endpoint of that run rather than as an entry in the older DCAU or DCAMU.
If you only want one character
Use the continuity labels to avoid accidental jumps. A Batman-only DCAU route can follow Batman: The Animated Series, Mask of the Phantasm, The New Batman Adventures, SubZero, Batman Beyond, Return of the Joker, Mystery of the Batwoman and the later DCAU films. A DCAMU Batman route should still begin with Flashpoint Paradox, because that film establishes the world in which the later Batman stories occur.

Common continuity mistakes
Mistake: treating every animated Justice League film as a sequel
Justice League in the DCAU, Justice League: War in the DCAMU and Justice League: Warworld in the Tomorrowverse have different casts, histories and visual continuities. The shared title identifies the team, not a common timeline.
Mistake: putting Flashpoint Paradox before the DCAU
The Flash’s timeline reset begins the DCAMU; it does not serve as the finale or prologue of the 1992 television continuity. Finish or pause the DCAU separately, then begin the DCAMU as a new film universe.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Mistake: assuming a 2020 release means a direct sequel
Justice League Dark: Apokolips War (2020) ends the DCAMU, while Superman: Man of Tomorrow (also 2020) starts the Tomorrowverse. Release-year overlap does not make the two films consecutive chapters.
Mistake: forcing standalone adaptations into a master chronology
Injustice, Gotham Knight and the LEGO productions are designed around different versions of DC’s characters. Listing them between connected-universe entries creates contradictions rather than a more complete timeline.
Mistake: treating a format as a continuity
A web series or short is not automatically separate, and a feature film is not automatically connected. In the DCAU, Lobo, Gotham Girls and Chase Me are included alongside television and feature releases. Conversely, the direct-to-video label does not make every DC film part of the DCAMU.
A simple decision checklist
- Want the 1990s-and-2000s television continuity? Choose the DCAU.
- Want a finished, 2013–2020 film arc? Choose the DCAMU.
- Want the later 2020–2024 film run and its Crisis conclusion? Choose the Tomorrowverse.
- Want a single adaptation or unusual version of a hero? Use the standalone section.
- First viewing: use release order. Rewatching the DCAU: try the approximate chronological order.
- Do not combine lists unless you deliberately want a survey of separate DC animated continuities.
The most reliable rule is therefore simple: select one universe, follow its own release list, and treat chronology as an optional experiment rather than a universal DC animation order.

Frequently Asked Questions
Are the DCAU, DCAMU and Tomorrowverse connected?
No. The DCAU is the television-led continuity that starts in 1992. The DCAMU is a separate 2013–2020 film arc that ends with Justice League Dark: Apokolips War. The Tomorrowverse follows the reset and runs from 2020 through the 2024 Crisis on Infinite Earths trilogy.

Should I watch DC animation in release order or chronological order?
Use release order for a first viewing of any continuity. The DCAU also has an approximate story chronology, useful for a rewatch because Batman Beyond is set decades later and Return of the Joker mixes flashbacks with future events.
Why do some DCAMU lists contain 15 films and others 16?
DC’s 2020 enumeration counted 15 films. Later guides include Constantine: City of Demons, creating a 16-film count. Put that title between Suicide Squad: Hell to Pay and The Death of Superman if you want the broader list.
Is Justice League: Crisis on Infinite Earths one movie?
It is a three-part concluding event. Watch Part One, Part Two and Part Three consecutively and in that order at the end of the Tomorrowverse list.

They do not fill gaps in the DCAU, DCAMU or Tomorrowverse. Treat them as standalone or alternate-continuity films and watch them independently.
Is Batman: Gotham Knight part of the DCAU?
No. It is an alternate version associated with the Nolan Batman film setting, so keep it separate from the DCAU lists.
