Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFollow your jacket’s sewn-in care label first: wash and dry instructions vary by brand, model, and construction. When the label permits machine washing, use a cleaner made for down, rinse thoroughly, and dry on low heat until the insulation is completely dry and evenly lofted. Store the jacket clean, dry, and loose—not compressed in its stuff sack.
Before washing: check the label and the jacket
Look for the sewn-in care label before choosing a wash cycle, water temperature, machine, or drying method. The label takes precedence over general advice because jackets can differ in shell fabric, construction, and finish. Patagonia’s example Men’s Down Sweater, an 800-fill-power jacket, specifies cold machine wash, no bleach, low-heat tumble dry, and no ironing or steaming; its label recommends two tennis balls for best results. Those directions apply to that garment, not every down jacket. Patagonia’s current care instructions and the label on your own jacket are the better guides for your model.

Before washing, check for open tears or loose hardware. Repair a hole first so washing does not worsen it or allow down to escape. For a small shell hole, Patagonia’s older Worn Wear guide recommends nylon repair tape or a down-jacket patch cut at least ½ inch larger than the hole on all sides, with rounded corners. For a larger rip, consult the jacket maker about repair service and warranty coverage.
How to wash a down jacket
Clean localized dirt when a full wash is unnecessary
For ordinary, localized soil, spot-clean where the garment’s care instructions allow. Wash the whole jacket when it needs a full clean rather than following a fixed seasonal schedule; the cited care guidance does not establish a universal washing frequency.

Use a down-specific cleaner and a suitable cycle
- Choose a cleaner made for down. Follow the bottle’s dose. Patagonia recommends down-specific detergent because conventional detergent may strip natural oils or leave residue that is difficult to rinse away. Do not use fabric softener or bleach.
- Select the machine and cycle from the garment label. Patagonia prefers a front-loading washer. Its current care guidance says a top-loader can work on hand-wash or delicate, while its older detailed article cautions that an agitator may damage some thicker jackets or box-wall constructions. If the label or maker warns against your machine or cycle, follow that warning.
- Rinse away soap. Make sure detergent is thoroughly rinsed out. Patagonia’s detailed guide suggests running an additional cycle without soap to clear residue.
Do not assume that getting down wet permanently ruins it. Patagonia notes that wet down temporarily loses insulating function; careful washing itself does not necessarily harm the insulation.
Dry the jacket completely before storing it
Thorough drying is essential: down can remain clumped and damp inside even when the shell feels dry. If the care label permits tumble drying, use low heat and be patient through multiple cycles. Stop periodically to separate clumps by hand and check that the jacket is drying evenly. Clean tennis balls or a heavy cotton towel can help redistribute clumps. Use balls only if they suit the garment’s instructions; Patagonia’s example 800-fill-power Down Sweater label specifically recommends two tennis balls.

Continue drying until the down is fully dry throughout and the jacket has regained even loft. Do not pack or store it while damp. Avoid high heat, which can damage garment materials.
If the label calls for air drying
When tumble drying is not permitted, Patagonia’s older Worn Wear article advises laying the jacket flat on a towel in a warm, dry place out of direct sunlight. Turn it and separate clumps periodically. That article says air drying may take from a couple of days to over a week depending on humidity; treat that as a range from its guidance, not a timetable. Check the insulation itself and do not store the jacket until it is dry throughout.

Store it clean, dry, and uncompressed
Once the jacket is fully dry, store it loose rather than leaving it stuffed or compressed in a stuff sack. Patagonia warns that storing down products stuffed is not recommended and that wet down stored stuffed can lead to mildew. The available care guidance does not specify an ideal storage temperature or humidity, so there is no evidence-based number to target here.

Fill power describes how much space a given weight of down occupies. Patagonia’s 2025 explanation of down fill power uses 650 cubic inches per ounce as the example for 650-fill-power down. Fill power is not the same as fill weight, which is the amount of down in the jacket.

Higher fill power can provide more warmth-to-weight efficiency and compressibility, but it does not establish that one finished jacket is warmer than another. Overall warmth also depends on how much down is used, how it is distributed and held in baffles, the shell and lining materials, and the jacket’s intended use. Patagonia describes its 800-fill-power garments as aimed at technical outdoor uses where performance, weight, and compressibility matter. Compare those factors together rather than treating fill power as a complete warmth rating.
