Do not put a Pokémon plush in the washing machine unless its sewn label or exact product listing explicitly permits a machine cycle. Pokémon merchandise is made in many different constructions. The official washable-plush line is a specific exception: its products are described as hand-washable, and the manufacturer says they must be dried thoroughly afterward. For every other plush, use the stated care instruction, which may require surface cleaning only.
Clothing, bags, hats, socks, figures, pins and household accessories are separate products with their own materials and labels. The safest routine is to identify the item, protect its attached parts, use the least aggressive permitted cleaning method, dry the interior completely and store it in a cool, dry, low-light place.

Start with the label, not the character
A Pikachu, Pichu or Eevee design does not determine how an item can be cleaned. Two plush toys featuring the same character can have different fabrics, stuffing, electronics, trims or internal supports. Find the sewn care tag first. If there is no tag, check the exact product listing for that model rather than relying on advice for another Pokémon product.

- Machine washable: follow the stated temperature, cycle, detergent, spin and drying limits exactly. Do not substitute a different cycle simply because it seems gentler.
- No care information: treat the item as surface-clean-only until the manufacturer confirms otherwise.
Official Pokémon merchandise pages cover plush, clothing and many other goods, but they do not establish one universal cleaning method for the catalog. The product-specific instruction controls.
Can you put a Pokémon plush in a washing machine?
Only when the item’s own label or listing expressly says machine washing is allowed. A plush can look like an ordinary soft toy while containing a sound box, battery compartment, cardboard insert, foam, glued decorations or a dense filling that stays wet in the center. Agitation, heat and a high-speed spin can also distort seams, pile and embroidered features.

If you cannot verify machine-wash permission, do not test it on a valuable or sentimental plush. A cautious surface clean is reversible; a soaked or misshapen filling may not be.

How to hand-wash an explicitly washable plush
The official washable-plush line is a defined exception to the usual caution. A 2022 Pokémon announcement says these plushes can be hand-washed when dirty, and later product pages repeat the need to dry them well. The pages list polyester and polyethylene construction; the Pichu example also lists polyurethane foam. Those materials do not make every Pokémon plush washable, but they explain why the exact model still matters.
1. Remove loose dust first
Shake the plush outdoors or brush it gently with a clean, soft brush. Vacuuming is possible only with a low-suction upholstery attachment held near, not against, delicate pile. Removing dry grit prevents it from becoming mud during washing.
2. Inspect every attached part
Look for batteries, switches, speakers, sound boxes, cardboard, paper tags that must stay dry, glued eyes, flocked surfaces, sequins, metallic prints and areas with peeling decoration. If the listing does not clearly authorize immersing those components, stop and use surface cleaning or ask the manufacturer for model-specific guidance.
3. Prepare cool or lukewarm water
Use a clean basin rather than a sink that may contain residue. A small amount of mild detergent is a conservative choice. The official Pokémon pages do not publish one universal detergent formula, so do not assume that bleach, stain remover, fabric softener or a specialty chemical is approved. Avoid products that could leave a film in the pile.

4. Wash without aggressive friction
Wet the plush gradually and support its full weight. Press water through the fabric with your hands, working soil out gently. Do not scrub embroidered features, twist the body, wring limbs or pull on ears, tails and straps. If a mark remains, dab that area rather than increasing force.
5. Rinse until detergent is gone
Drain the basin and refill it with clean water as needed. Press the plush under the water to release detergent, then lift it with both hands so the wet stuffing is supported. Continue until the rinse water no longer feels slippery. Never yank a saturated plush by one appendage.
6. Press out water with towels
Place the plush on a clean towel, roll the towel around it and press gently. Replace the towel when it becomes wet. This removes water without the stretching and clumping caused by wringing.
7. Reshape while damp
Return limbs, ears, cheeks and clothing to their intended positions before drying. Smooth the pile in its normal direction. If stuffing has shifted, redistribute it with light hand pressure rather than poking through seams.

8. Dry the center, seams and pile completely
Air circulation is more important than speed. Place the plush on a dry towel or ventilated rack in a well-aired area, turning it periodically so the underside can dry. Keep it away from direct high heat, radiators and intense sun unless the label specifically allows them. Check the thickest part, seams, feet and any foam before putting the plush away. The official Pichu product page gives the instruction: 洗ったあとは、良く乾かしてから遊んであげてね！, meaning, “After washing, dry it well before playing with it.”
Surface-clean plush that cannot be soaked
Surface cleaning is the correct method for a plush marked surface wash only, and it is the prudent fallback when construction is uncertain.
- Remove dust with a soft brush or low-suction vacuum held just above the fabric.
- Test a barely damp white cloth on an inconspicuous area. Stop if color transfers or the fabric changes texture.
- Use a second cloth dampened with clean water and a tiny amount of mild detergent. Wring it until it is damp, not dripping.
- Blot the mark from the outside toward the center. Do not flood seams, eyes, sound modules or the stuffing.
- Remove detergent residue with a separate damp cloth.
- Pat dry with a towel and leave the plush in moving air until the treated area is fully dry.
Do not saturate a stain in an attempt to make it disappear faster. A wet patch can wick into the filling, create a tide mark or remain damp long after the surface feels dry. For paint, ink, oil, mold or an unknown chemical, home experimentation can spread the damage; seek model-specific advice from the manufacturer or a professional textile cleaner.

Construction details that change the cleaning decision
Electronics and sound boxes
Battery compartments, speakers, switches and wiring are a reason to avoid immersion unless the care instructions expressly permit it. Remove batteries only when the product instructions say they are removable. Do not assume that taking out a battery makes the rest of the electronic assembly waterproof.

Polyurethane foam appears in the official Pichu example, alongside polyester and polyethylene. Foam and tightly packed filling can hold water internally. Even when a model is hand-washable, allow substantially more time for the center to dry and check it by pressing thick areas, not merely by touching the outer fabric.
Glued eyes, patches and trims
Adhesive can soften in water or heat. Printed faces, faux-leather patches, plastic details, ribbons and glued badges may need spot cleaning even when the surrounding textile is washable. Keep friction low and follow any separate warning on the tag.
Flocking, sequins and metallic decoration
Raised flocking, loose sequins and metallic prints can catch on a washer drum or shed under scrubbing. Protect them from rubbing and treat the decorated panel as a surface-clean area unless the model’s instructions say otherwise.
Paper and cardboard inserts
Cardboard can swell, warp and transfer dye. If an insert is not identified as removable, keep it dry. Do not cut open a seam to remove it; that changes the product and can create a safety or repair problem.
Washing Pokémon clothing
Shirts, hoodies, jackets, pajamas, socks, hats and costumes are textiles, not plush toys. Read each garment’s sewn label for water temperature, cycle, detergent, bleach, tumble-dry, ironing and dry-cleaning directions. If the label gives no permission for a treatment, do not infer it from another garment in the same collection.
Prepare the garment
- Close zippers, snaps, hook-and-loop fasteners and buttons that could catch on prints or other clothing.
- Turn printed garments inside out when the label permits laundering. This reduces direct abrasion on the graphic.
- Empty pockets and remove detachable accessories only when the garment instructions identify them as removable.
- Separate dark, bright and light colors according to ordinary textile-sorting practice.
Choose the labeled wash and dry settings
Use the temperature and cycle printed on the garment, not a generic “cold is always safe” rule. Follow the label’s detergent and bleach restrictions. If tumble drying is allowed, use the stated heat; otherwise air-dry in a way that does not stretch shoulders, hoods or elastic. Iron only at the permitted temperature and avoid pressing directly over prints unless the label gives a method.

Deal with color bleeding or print damage
If dye appears in the wash water, stop combining that garment with lighter items. A cracked, sticky or lifting graphic is a sign that heat or abrasion may be too high; do not scrape it. Adjust future care to the label’s lower-temperature or air-dry instruction, and treat the damaged garment as a construction-specific problem rather than applying the plush procedure.
Cleaning Pokémon bags, hats and other accessories
Bags and accessories often combine fabric with structured inserts, coatings, faux leather, plastic hardware, electronics or glued patches. Unless the manufacturer explicitly permits immersion, spot cleaning is safer.

- Check the lining, base, straps and hardware for separate materials.
- Test a damp cloth on a hidden area for dye transfer or coating changes.
- Blot the affected area with mild detergent solution, then remove residue with a clean damp cloth.
- Air-dry with pockets open and the item supported in its natural shape.
Do not submerge a structured bag merely because its outer fabric resembles a washable shirt. Water trapped behind a stiff insert or coating can cause odor, distortion or delamination. Keep electronics, light-up parts and sound modules dry unless the exact instructions say otherwise.
Drying: the step that prevents hidden damage
“Dry” means the interior is dry, not just the outside feels cool. Thick plush, foam, folded cuffs, lined bags and dense seams can remain damp for a long time.
- Use moving air and turn the item so all sides are exposed.
- Separate folded layers, open pockets and unfasten closures where the label permits.
- Press thick areas with a dry towel and compare them with the surrounding fabric.
- Check for a cool, heavy or musty-feeling center, which can indicate retained moisture.
- Do not seal an item in plastic, a drawer or a storage box until it is completely dry.
High heat can shrink clothing, soften adhesive, damage prints or deform synthetic parts. Use it only when the care label specifically permits the temperature and method.

Prepare items before storage
Store only clean, fully dry items. Soil, skin oils and food residue attract pests and become harder to remove over time. For plush, restore the natural shape. For clothing, fold along seams rather than compressing graphics or elastic. For bags, support the body and leave pockets open until you are certain there is no residual moisture.

A cool, dry, dark or low-light area reduces moisture exposure and helps limit fading. Avoid damp basements, hot attics, windowsills and locations directly above radiators or vents. Leave enough room that plush is not permanently crushed and folded clothing is not forced into a tight stack.
Protect without trapping moisture
Breathable fabric protection is practical for long-term storage when available. Avoid sealing a recently washed plush or damp textile in airtight plastic. If you use a container, put the item away only after it is fully dry and allow enough space to prevent compression. Keep storage materials clean and colorfast so they do not transfer dye.

Display versus long-term storage

Inspect periodically
Check stored items at intervals for dampness, odor, dust, insects, color change, loose decorations and flattened filling. Remove an item that feels damp and dry it in moving air before returning it. Early inspection is easier than repairing a seam or treating established mold.
A decision framework for any Pokémon item
When the label is available, answer these four questions in order:

- What is attached? Electronics, foam, inserts, flocking, sequins, prints, glued parts or coatings?
- Can the interior dry fully? Consider dense filling, foam, lining, pockets and seams before adding water.
- Where will it be stored? Display needs dust and light control; long-term storage needs dryness, breathable protection and periodic checks.
This framework prevents a common mistake: treating every Pokémon product as if the character name were a care specification. Official product pages show that materials differ between models, so the cleaning and storage decision must follow the individual item.
Common mistakes and safer fixes
“Another Pokémon plush survived the washer.”
Problem: different models can use different fabrics, fills and attached components.
Fix: follow the exact item’s sewn label or listing.
“The outside is dry, so it can go back in the box.”
Problem: stuffing, foam, seams and linings can retain water.
Fix: continue air circulation and inspect the thickest areas before storage.
“More detergent will remove the stain.”
Problem: excess residue can attract soil and require more rinsing, while aggressive scrubbing can damage pile or prints.
Fix: use a small amount of mild detergent for an explicitly washable plush and blot stains on surface-clean items.
“A sealed plastic bag keeps dust out.”
Problem: sealing in residual moisture creates a poor storage environment.
Fix: store only completely dry items and use breathable protection when practical.
“Sunlight will dry it faster.”
Problem: prolonged direct light can contribute to fading, especially on displayed textiles and plush.
Fix: use air circulation in a shaded or low-light area unless the label specifies another method.
What the official washable-plush announcements establish
The strongest product-specific wording is the phrase washable Pokémon plush. The official 2022 announcement describes hand washing when the plush is dirty. A 2024 announcement describes an expansion of the washable-plush range and names Amazon.co.jp Pokémon Store as a planned sales channel. Availability, prices and inventory can change by market and date, so check the current listing for the exact model before buying or washing it.
Those announcements do not make every Pokémon plush machine-washable, and they do not publish a universal washing frequency, failure rate or storage lifespan. Use them as confirmation for the named washable line, not as permission for unrelated products.
