To wait for network activity to go quiet during navigation, pass waitUntil: 'networkidle' to page.goto(), then capture the page with page.screenshot(). Playwright defines network idle as no network connections for at least 500 ms, but discourages using it as a test-readiness signal; for tests, assert that the content you need is present before taking the screenshot.
Wait for network idle as part of navigation
Use this pattern when you want the navigation itself to wait for the network-idle state before the screenshot:

const { chromium } = require('playwright');
(async () => {
const browser = await chromium.launch();
const page = await browser.newPage();
await page.goto('https://example.com', { waitUntil: 'networkidle' });
await page.screenshot({ path: 'screenshot.png' });
await browser.close();
})();
The navigation promise resolves after Playwright observes at least 500 ms with no network connections. The screenshot is then saved as screenshot.png. Replace the example URL and filename with the page and output path you need.
Wait after navigation has already committed
If navigation has already occurred, or the page is open and you want to wait for its current document to reach the state, use page.waitForLoadState('networkidle') before capture:

- THE PERFECT VIEW: The 178/178 degree extra wide viewing angle prevents the shifting of colors when viewed from an offset angle, so you always get consistent colors
- WORK SEAMLESSLY: This sleek monitor is virtually bezel-free on three sides, so the screen looks even bigger for the viewer. This minimalistic design also allows for seamless multi-monitor setups that enhance your workflow and boost productivity
- A BETTER READING EXPERIENCE: For busy office workers, EasyRead mode provides a more paper-like experience for when viewing lengthy documents
await page.goto('https://example.com');
await page.waitForLoadState('networkidle');
await page.screenshot({ path: 'screenshot.png' });
waitForLoadState() requires navigation to have committed. If the current document has already reached the requested state, the method resolves immediately; it does not start a fresh 500 ms quiet period.
Choose a readiness check that matches the screenshot
Network quiet and useful page content are different conditions. A page can stop making requests before the heading, results, or other element you need appears. Conversely, background requests can continue after the visible content is ready. Playwright marks networkidle as discouraged for tests and recommends web assertions to assess readiness instead. See the Playwright Page API.

For a test that needs a particular element, wait for or assert that specific condition before capture. For example, with Playwright Test:
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →import { test, expect } from '@playwright/test';
test('captures the results page', async ({ page }) => {
await page.goto('https://example.com/results');
await expect(page.getByRole('heading', { name: 'Results' })).toBeVisible();
await page.screenshot({ path: 'results.png' });
});
Use a condition that represents the state you actually need: a visible heading, a results container, or another meaningful page element. This makes the capture depend on the content rather than an incidental lull in network activity.

Stabilize visual regression screenshots
For screenshot regression tests, Playwright Test provides toHaveScreenshot(). It waits until two consecutive screenshots match, then compares the last screenshot with the expected image. This helps with visual stability; it does not replace checking that the right page state has loaded first.
import { test, expect } from '@playwright/test';
test('matches the results screenshot', async ({ page }) => {
await page.goto('https://example.com/results');
await expect(page.getByRole('heading', { name: 'Results' })).toBeVisible();
await expect(page).toHaveScreenshot('results.png');
});
See Playwright’s Visual comparisons documentation for screenshot assertion behavior.

Which waiting pattern should you use?
| Situation | Use | What it waits for |
|---|---|---|
| Network-idle wait should be part of navigation | page.goto(url, { waitUntil: 'networkidle' }) |
Navigation completion with at least 500 ms without network connections. |
| Navigation has committed and you need to wait on the current document | page.waitForLoadState('networkidle') |
The requested load state; resolves immediately if it has already been reached. |
| A test needs specific content ready | A web assertion for the relevant element or state | The semantic condition your test requires. |
| A visual regression test needs a stable image | expect(page).toHaveScreenshot() |
Two consecutive matching screenshots before comparison. |
Troubleshoot waits that do not behave as expected
- The wait finishes, but expected content is missing: Network idle only describes connection activity. Add a web assertion for the element or state the screenshot needs.
waitForLoadState()returns immediately: The current document may already have reached network idle. If the goal is content readiness, wait for the relevant element rather than expecting a new quiet interval.waitForLoadState()is called before navigation commits: The method requires navigation to have committed. Tie the wait to navigation withpage.goto(url, { waitUntil: 'networkidle' }), or call the load-state wait after navigation.- A screenshot test changes despite the page appearing ready: First assert the intended page state, then use
toHaveScreenshot()to let Playwright wait for consecutive matching images before comparison.
Or skip the browser setup
If you need a screenshot through an API instead of writing a Playwright script, ScreenshotNeo returns a screenshot or PDF from one GET request. For example, with cURL:
