Use Symfony Panther to open the GST invoice page in headless Chrome, wait until the invoice and any dynamically rendered QR code are present, then save a screenshot. A screenshot records what the browser displayed; it does not create, issue, validate, or replace a GST invoice or any required e-invoice process.
Use Symfony Panther for a PHP-controlled capture
Panther lets PHP drive Chrome, including pages that rely on JavaScript. The key is to wait for a stable, invoice-specific element before saving the image. A page load event alone may occur before asynchronously populated invoice fields or a QR code have finished rendering.

Install the dependencies
In your project directory, install Panther with Composer:
composer require symfony/pantherInstall Chrome or Chromium in the environment that will run the script. Panther also needs a compatible WebDriver/driver setup; follow the current Symfony Panther installation instructions for your operating system and runtime. Confirm that the browser is available to the process running PHP, especially in containers or CI environments.

Capture the invoice after it renders
Save this as screenshot-invoice.php. Set INVOICE_URL to a page your session is authorized to access, and change INVOICE_SELECTOR to a stable selector that identifies the rendered invoice in your application.

Choose dimensions and output deliberately
The screenshot shows the browser-rendered page, so viewport dimensions affect what is visible and may affect responsive layout. Panther supports setting Chrome’s window size; use dimensions appropriate to the invoice layout and check the resulting file for clipped totals, unreadable text, missing images, and overlays. If the invoice is taller than the viewport, a viewport screenshot may not contain the entire invoice. Select a capture method and page layout that preserve all required content, then inspect the image rather than assuming it is complete.
Use Chrome’s headless command line for a simple URL capture
If PHP does not need to interact with the page, Chrome’s headless CLI can be a smaller alternative. With Chrome installed and available as chrome on the command path, a basic capture is:

A screenshot is a visual record of a webpage, not a mechanism for generating or validating a tax invoice. The Central Board of Indirect Taxes and Customs (CBIC) Rule 46 lists invoice particulars including supplier name, address and GSTIN, a consecutive serial number unique for a financial year, issue date, and recipient information, among further requirements. CBIC Rule 48(4) describes the e-invoice process for notified persons, including particulars in FORM GST INV-01 and obtaining an Invoice Reference Number through the common GST portal.
GSTN guidance says that, where e-invoice provisions apply, the IRP-returned QR code is included in the signed JSON and the ERP, accounting, or billing software converts its string into a QR-code image for the invoice copy. The QR code contains verification data, including supplier and recipient GSTINs, invoice number and date, invoice value, line-item count, main-item HSN code, IRN, and IRN generation date. If the webpage displays that code, wait for it to render and make sure the captured dimensions leave it visible and legible. A screenshot does not obtain an IRN or satisfy the underlying invoice rules.

Troubleshoot incomplete or failed captures
- The invoice selector never appears: Check the selector against the rendered page and confirm the URL reached the expected invoice, rather than a login page, error page, or redirect. Wait for an element that exists only when the invoice is ready.
- Fields or QR code are missing: The page may populate them asynchronously. Wait for the specific field or QR-code element, not just the outer invoice container. Confirm that the code is actually rendered on the webpage before capture.
- Content is clipped: Review the viewport dimensions and the page’s responsive layout. A normal viewport capture may not include content below the fold; choose an appropriate full-page approach where needed and inspect the saved image.
- Chrome or its driver cannot start: Verify Chrome/Chromium is installed in the runtime and that the driver setup is compatible with the browser version. This is common when a local setup works but a container or CI image lacks browser dependencies.
- Authentication redirects the capture: The sample requests a public URL and does not perform a login flow. Ensure the capture process has authorized access to the invoice page before waiting for its selector.
- The API response is not an image: Check the HTTP status and response headers, including ScreenshotNeo’s page-verdict and billing headers, before treating the body as a successful image file.
FAQ
Does taking a screenshot make a GST invoice valid?
No. It only records the webpage appearance. Invoice issuance and e-invoice obligations are separate processes governed by applicable GST requirements.
