CBR vs VBR for a Pre-Recorded YouTube Live Playlist

Use CBR for a prerecorded playlist sent to YouTube Live through an encoder. VBR is YouTube’s recommendation for uploaded video files, a different workflow.

Use CBR for the encoder feed sent to YouTube Live. YouTube’s published Live encoder settings specify constant bitrate. Its separate recommendation for VBR applies to uploading a video file—not to sending a prerecorded playlist through a live encoder.

Why the delivery path matters

CBR aims to keep the encoded bitrate steady over time; VBR varies it with the complexity of the video and audio. The fact that your source is prerecorded does not change the delivery method: if an encoder sends it as a live feed, use YouTube’s Live ingest guidance. If you upload a finished file through YouTube’s upload workflow, use the upload recommendations instead.

These are workflow-specific recommendations, not a published comparison proving that one mode always produces better picture quality or uses less bandwidth. YouTube’s official pages do not establish that VBR is impossible in every third-party encoder; the practical choice for YouTube Live is to follow its stated CBR recommendation.

Choose the Live bitrate for your stream

CBR is a mode, not a bitrate value. Choose the bitrate separately using the Live table row that matches your video codec, resolution, and frame rate. YouTube’s H.264 recommendations include:

Ingest resolution and frame rate Recommended H.264 bitrate
1080p at 30 fps 14 Mbps
1080p at 60 fps 17 Mbps
720p at 30 fps 8 Mbps
720p at 60 fps 8 Mbps

These figures are YouTube-published recommendations, not independent test results. YouTube also provides codec-specific guidance for other resolutions and frame rates, and separate recommendations for H.265/HEVC and AV1. Check the current Live encoder settings and bitrate table for your exact combination; the figures may change.

Set up the encoder and check the connection

  1. Choose the codec, resolution, and frame rate. Make sure they match what your encoder will send, then consult YouTube’s Live bitrate table for that combination. YouTube supports RTMP/RTMPS ingest and lists H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 video, with frame rates up to 60 fps.
  2. Set bitrate encoding to CBR. Enter the recommended bitrate for the selected codec, resolution, and frame rate in your encoder’s live output settings.
  3. Set a two-second keyframe interval. YouTube recommends two seconds and says the interval should not exceed four seconds.
  4. Check audio settings. YouTube lists AAC or MP3 as audio options; consult its Live settings for limitations that apply to a particular audio configuration.
  5. Verify upload capacity with headroom. The connection’s available outbound bandwidth must support the stream’s total bitrate. YouTube recommends leaving 20% spare upload bandwidth, rather than operating at the connection’s limit. See YouTube’s streaming tips as well as its encoder settings.
  6. Test before relying on the playlist. Start a test stream and monitor stream health for connection or encoding problems before using the setup continuously.

YouTube automatically transcodes a live stream into multiple output formats for viewers using different devices and networks. That does not change the encoder’s job: send a stable Live feed using the settings appropriate to your source and connection.

Choose how to send a prerecorded playlist

YouTube’s encoder setup guidance describes software encoders and standalone hardware encoders, and lists a cloud service for continuous prerecorded streaming. These are ways to deliver the feed; they do not change YouTube’s stated CBR recommendation for Live ingest. A cloud service is an optional workflow, not a requirement for choosing a bitrate mode. See YouTube’s encoder setup guide.

Troubleshooting common setup problems

  • You are unsure whether to choose CBR or VBR: Check how the video is being delivered. Use CBR for the encoder feed to Live; VBR belongs to YouTube’s separate file-upload recommendations.
  • The stream bitrate exceeds available upload bandwidth: Recheck the total bitrate against outbound capacity and preserve the recommended 20% spare bandwidth. If needed, choose a lower supported resolution or frame rate and use its matching recommendation in YouTube’s Live table.
  • Your encoder’s available values do not match the cited examples: The examples above cover only four H.264 combinations. Consult YouTube’s current table for your actual codec, resolution, and frame rate rather than applying one of those values to a different setup.
  • The stream has problems despite matching the bitrate: Confirm the keyframe interval is two seconds or no more than four, check audio compatibility, test the connection before the stream, and monitor YouTube’s stream health. A bitrate recommendation alone does not guarantee a particular viewer experience.
