Use a Selenium explicit wait for the element’s required state, then capture the element returned by that wait. For an element-only image, wait until it is visible and call element.screenshot("target.png"). If you need the whole viewport instead, take a driver-level screenshot after the same wait.
Wait for the state your screenshot needs
A navigation completing does not guarantee that JavaScript-driven content or dynamically inserted elements are ready. Selenium’s default page-load strategy waits for a readyState of complete, but that does not establish that a particular target has appeared. Use an explicit wait for the target condition instead. Choose the condition according to what the image must show:
- Presence: Selenium can locate the element in the DOM. Use this when existence is enough, even if the element is not displayed.
- Visibility: The element is present and displayed. This is usually the right choice when the screenshot should show the target.
- Application-specific readiness: If the page exposes a meaningful completion marker, expected text, or state, wait for that rather than assuming visibility alone means the content is finished.

Python: wait for visibility and save the element
This example waits up to 10 seconds for a CSS selector to become visible, then saves a PNG of that element. The timeout is an example; set it to fit the application and test environment.

element.screenshot("target.png")until() returns the truthy result of the condition—in this case, the matched element—so you can pass it directly to the element screenshot method. If the condition does not become true before the timeout, Selenium raises TimeoutException. Python’s WebDriverWait uses a default polling interval of 0.5 seconds and, by default, ignores NoSuchElementException while checking. Python WebDriverWait API, Selenium 4.50.0

Choose an element image or a viewport image
element.screenshot("target.png") saves a PNG of the current element, which is the natural choice when the desired output is a cropped image of that target. If the target is only a readiness condition and you want the entire browser viewport, wait first and then use the driver’s screenshot method:

Use explicit waits instead of fixed sleeps
A fixed sleep pauses for a chosen duration whether the page is ready or not: it can waste time when content appears quickly and still be too short when it appears slowly. An explicit wait polls for the condition that matters and proceeds as soon as it becomes true. Selenium’s guidance is to avoid mixing implicit and explicit waits because the resulting wait durations can be unpredictable: “Do not mix implicit and explicit waits.” Selenium: Waiting Strategies
Handle common wait and screenshot problems
TimeoutException: The condition never became true within the configured timeout. Check the locator, confirm the element can appear in the current page or frame, and verify that the application reaches the expected state. Increase the timeout only when the application’s expected load time warrants it.- The element exists but is not captured as expected: Presence only confirms that Selenium found it. Wait for visibility when it needs to be displayed, or for a stronger application-specific state when the image must show completed content.
- The screenshot happens too early after navigation: Page-load completion does not guarantee JavaScript updates are done. Add a wait for the specific target or readiness marker rather than relying on navigation alone.
- You get a cropped image instead of the full page area you expected: Element screenshots capture the element, not the whole viewport. Use a driver-level screenshot method for the viewport.
- Wait timing behaves unpredictably: Check whether the test combines implicit and explicit waits. Selenium advises against mixing them.

The matched WebElement when the visibility condition succeeds; it raises TimeoutException if the condition does not succeed in time.

Does Selenium’s Expected Conditions documentation apply to every language binding?
No. The documentation notes that .NET stopped supporting Expected Conditions in Selenium 4, so check the guidance for the binding and version you use.
