Run JavaScript in the page to pause animations that are currently active, then take the screenshot using your Selenium binding. The core script is document.getAnimations().forEach(animation => animation.pause());. It freezes each animation at its current time; it does not choose a named keyframe or guarantee identical pixels across runs.
Pause animations, then capture
Wait for the page to reach the UI state you want first. Execute the pause script in the page’s JavaScript context through Selenium, then take the screenshot promptly:
document.getAnimations().forEach(animation => animation.pause());The script uses the Web Animations API. MDN documents that document.getAnimations() returns animations affecting the document and its descendants, including CSS Animations, CSS Transitions, and Web Animations. The API provides playback control for animations, including CSS-based ones.

Other Selenium bindings
The JavaScript binding documents driver.takeScreenshot(), which returns a Base64-encoded PNG string. Selenium’s Java documentation shows getScreenshotAs(OutputType.FILE). Use the screenshot call for your binding after executing the same browser-side pause script.
What gets frozen—and what does not
Calling pause() suspends an animation at the current animation time. It does not rewind it, advance it to completion, or select a particular keyframe. The frame therefore depends on when the script runs and on whether the page has reached the intended state.

If the test needs a predetermined frame, use an application-specific test mode or arrange a deterministic animation time rather than relying on the moment the pause call happens. That setup depends on the page and should be verified for the application under test.
Handle errors and coverage limits
Pause can throw for unresolved animation time
MDN notes that Animation.pause() can raise InvalidStateError when the animation’s currentTime is unresolved and its end time is positive infinity. If this occurs, inspect the page’s active animations and handle that animation as a page-specific case instead of assuming every animation can be paused successfully.

Shadow roots may need separate verification
document.getAnimations() is scoped to animations associated with document descendants. Pages that use shadow roots extensively need specific verification; do not assume the document-level call covers every animation in every shadow-tree configuration.
Readiness is application-specific
Pausing too early can freeze a loading or intermediate state; pausing too late can capture a different frame than intended. Wait for the relevant element or application state before running the script, and capture immediately afterward. There is no universal wait condition for every page.

Troubleshoot a screenshot that still looks animated or inconsistent
- The screenshot shows the wrong moment: the pause call preserves the time reached when it takes effect. Wait for the intended UI state first, or use a controlled animation-time setup if a specific frame is required.
- An animation appears not to pause: check whether it is associated with the document descendants covered by
getAnimations(). On a shadow-root-heavy page, verify coverage for that page. - The script errors: inspect whether an animation has unresolved
currentTimeand an infinite end time, the documented condition that can makepause()throwInvalidStateError. - Results vary across runs: confirm that navigation, data loading, and the target UI state are stable before pausing. The general recipe does not promise pixel-identical results across sites, browsers, or configurations.
