Wait for the target element—and, if necessary, a signal that its data is complete—before capturing the screenshot. A page-load event or fixed sleep does not prove that asynchronously rendered content is ready. Use a finite, condition-based wait in your browser framework, then capture the page or element.
Choose the right definition of “ready”
First decide what the screenshot needs to show. An element can be attached to the DOM without being visible; it can be visible while its text, images, or application data are still loading. A visibility wait solves only the visibility part. If a complete result matters, add an app-specific condition such as expected text or a completed-state marker.

- Attached: the element exists in the DOM. Use this only when presence is enough.
- Visible: the framework considers the element rendered and not hidden. Visibility rules differ between frameworks and do not establish that its contents are complete.
- Application-ready: a concrete condition confirms the state needed for the image, such as expected text or a “loaded” marker.
Prefer a condition-based wait with a finite timeout to an arbitrary sleep. Let a timeout fail visibly rather than silently capturing an incomplete page.

Playwright: wait for a locator, then capture it
Use a stable locator, such as a test ID or an accessible role and name. The example waits for visibility, checks application-specific text, and screenshots the target element:

A locator screenshot performs actionability checks and scrolls the target into view. Because the locator resolves immediately before the action, a changing DOM can cause it to resolve to a different matching element. Playwright recommends locator-based waits or web assertions over the discouraged ElementHandle.waitForSelector approach. See the ElementHandle API and Page API.

The element screenshot attempts to scroll the target into view. Visibility alone does not mean its data has finished loading; add a check for expected text, a loaded marker, or another application-specific signal when required. A navigation readiness state does not guarantee that dynamic application content is ready. Selenium’s Waiting Strategies documentation covers explicit waits and cautions that combining implicit and explicit waits can make total wait times unpredictable.
Capture the page or only the element?
- Capture the element when the deliverable is a component image and you want the framework to bring that target into view. Use the element or locator screenshot method supported by your framework.
- Capture the page when surrounding context matters. Wait for the target condition first, then use the page-level screenshot method. Confirm the target is within the intended screenshot region.
Element-level capture is not a substitute for checking the screenshot’s framing: clipping, overlays, or a target outside the intended region can still produce an unusable image.

Troubleshoot waits and incomplete screenshots
- The wait succeeds but the screenshot looks blank: check that the condition requires visibility rather than mere DOM attachment. Inspect whether the target is covered, clipped, or outside the captured region.
- The target is present but its content is stale or partial: add a condition for expected text, a completion marker, or another reliable application state. Visibility does not prove data completion.
- The wait times out: verify that the selector identifies the intended element, check whether it is inside a frame or shadow root, and inspect the page’s loading or error state. Do not suppress the timeout by taking the screenshot anyway.
- A fixed delay is flaky: replace it with a condition tied to the target. In Selenium, account for the unpredictable combined delays that can result from mixing implicit and explicit waits.
- Images vary between runs: use a precise locator and stable test data. Playwright’s screenshot options include stylesheets that can hide or alter dynamic elements when that is appropriate for repeatable captures; see the Page API.

No. Visibility confirms a rendering condition, not that asynchronous content is complete. Add a condition for the expected content or application state.
