What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Short answer: Choose Browserless when you want managed browser capacity or its HTTP screenshot endpoint and would rather avoid operating browser workers. Choose self-hosted Puppeteer when deployment and capacity control matter more than the work of running, tuning, and scaling the browser service. Neither option is inherently faster or cheaper for every batch: compare them with your URLs, capture settings, concurrency, current service pricing, and infrastructure costs.
What you are comparing
Browserless is a managed headless-browser service that accepts Puppeteer or Playwright connections over WebSocket and also offers REST APIs, including a screenshot endpoint. The endpoint accepts a URL and optional Puppeteer-style screenshot options and can return PNG, JPEG, or WebP. You can also connect Puppeteer to a remote Browserless browser and retain familiar page-level operations. See the Browserless documentation and its screenshot API documentation.

Self-hosting means deploying and operating the browser service yourself, for example with Browserless’s open-source Docker image, or running your own Puppeteer browser workers. You control deployment and capacity, but also take responsibility for configuration, resource sizing, queueing, scaling, and runtime operations. The Browserless Docker guide documents concurrency and queue settings: Open Source Docker Deployment.

Consider managed Browserless when
- You want to avoid operating a browser fleet and are willing to use a managed service.
- A REST screenshot request is sufficient, so you do not need to manage a remote Puppeteer session yourself.
- Your expected parallelism fits the concurrency available on the plan you select. Confirm current plan limits and prices before forecasting spend.
- You can account for session duration and ensure remote sessions are closed. Browserless says open sessions continue until timeout and consume usage.
Consider self-hosting when
- You need direct control over where browsers run, how capacity is provisioned, or how the service is configured.
- Your team can deploy and maintain the browser service, tune concurrency and queueing, monitor host resources, and handle failures.
- You can estimate infrastructure and operational costs from your own workload rather than assuming self-hosting is automatically cheaper.
The available documentation establishes these operational differences, not a universal winner on speed or total cost. Browserless’s example of parallel requests illustrates how independent requests can run together; it is not a throughput benchmark for arbitrary sites or plan sizes.

How to compare them fairly
- Choose representative pages. Include the kinds of URLs your production batch will capture, including pages with slower loads or heavier content.
- Hold capture settings constant. Match viewport, output format, full-page behavior, wait condition, and any other screenshot options.
- Test realistic concurrency. Run batches at the parallelism you expect to need, while staying within the Browserless plan concurrency you are evaluating.
- Record the same outcomes for both setups. Measure end-to-end latency, failed captures, retries, peak parallelism, CPU and memory use, session duration, and the operational work needed to keep the run healthy.
- Build a workload-specific cost estimate. For Browserless, include current plan pricing and the service’s usage rules. For self-hosting, include compute, capacity headroom, and the labor of deploying and maintaining the workers. The documentation alone does not establish either total cost for your use case.
Browserless details that affect bulk captures
Remote Puppeteer sessions
Browserless’s Puppeteer guide recommends puppeteer-core for connecting to a managed browser. The main change is to connect to the remote browser rather than launch a local one; page-level operations remain familiar. A connection uses a session and counts toward plan concurrency. Local file paths belong to your application machine, not the remote browser, so do not assume a path available to your script will be available to the browser. Follow the current connection instructions in the Browserless Puppeteer guide.
Session billing
Browserless’s cloud billing documentation says browser time is billed in 30-second increments, with partial increments rounded upward; its example says a 45-second session consumes two units. This is a vendor billing rule, not a complete cost comparison. Check the current plan price and usage terms before estimating batch spend. See Browserless unit consumption.
Self-hosted Docker resources
For its Docker deployment example, Browserless recommends configuring 2 GB of shared memory. Its guide warns that Docker’s 64 MB default can cause Chrome crashes under load. Treat 2 GB as vendor guidance for that deployment example, not a sizing guarantee: actual resource requirements depend on the pages, concurrency, and host. The same guide documents concurrency and queue configuration.

A basic remote Puppeteer pattern
Use this as a starting point, not a complete production batch runner. Install puppeteer-core, set your Browserless WebSocket endpoint and token according to your account’s current connection instructions, and ensure each browser connection is closed even when a capture fails. Keep the token out of source control and logs. Browserless’s documentation describes the connection setup and session behavior: Puppeteer connection guide.
const puppeteer = require('puppeteer-core');
async function capture(url, outputPath) {
const browser = await puppeteer.connect({
browserWSEndpoint: process.env.BROWSERLESS_WS_ENDPOINT,
});
try {
const page = await browser.newPage();
await page.goto(url, { waitUntil: 'networkidle2' });
await page.screenshot({ path: outputPath, fullPage: true });
} finally {
await browser.close();
}
}
capture('https://example.com', 'shot.png').catch((error) => {
console.error(error);
process.exitCode = 1;
});
Set BROWSERLESS_WS_ENDPOINT to the WebSocket endpoint supplied for your Browserless account; do not copy a credential-bearing endpoint into a public repository. For a production batch, add bounded concurrency, per-URL timeouts, retry rules, and result tracking. Choose wait conditions to match the pages rather than assuming that network idle is appropriate for every site.
Or skip the browser setup
ScreenshotNeo is an alternative to try first if you want a website screenshot API rather than browser workers to run. It takes one GET request with a URL and returns an image or PDF; its parameter names also work with those used by other screenshot APIs, which can make switching easier. It accepts cookie banners before capture and removes 60+ known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets; each cleanup step can be turned off. Bot checks/CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and responses identify the page verdict and billing status in headers. It also provides an MCP server for AI agents, with tools including take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf.

Browser crashes under load on self-hosted Docker
Check shared memory first. Browserless warns that Docker’s default 64 MB can cause Chrome crashes under load and recommends 2 GB for its deployment example. Also inspect host memory and CPU at the actual concurrency you are running; the example setting is not a substitute for workload testing.
Requests queue or fail at peak concurrency
On Browserless cloud, compare parallel sessions with the concurrency allowed by your current plan. For a self-hosted deployment, review the service’s concurrency and queue configuration and the capacity of the host. Lower parallelism and rerun the same URLs to see whether failures are load-related.

Remote Puppeteer cannot find a local file
The browser runs remotely. A local path available to the Node.js process is not automatically present on the Browserless machine. Use a workflow that makes the required content accessible to the remote browser instead of relying on the caller’s filesystem.
Usage is higher than expected
For Browserless cloud sessions, review session duration and ensure each connection is closed. Open sessions continue until timeout and consume usage; billing rounds browser time up in 30-second increments. Compare actual session lifetimes with the current unit-consumption rules.
Captures differ between runs
Check that both architectures use the same URL, viewport, screenshot options, and readiness condition. A page may load differently depending on its own behavior and network conditions; record failures and retries as well as successful capture time.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does Browserless offer a screenshot API as well as remote Puppeteer?
Yes. Its documentation describes both remote Puppeteer or Playwright connections over WebSocket and REST APIs, including a screenshot endpoint.
Is Browserless proven faster or cheaper than self-hosting?
No workload-independent performance or cost verdict is established by the cited documentation. Compare representative URLs and current prices against your own infrastructure and operating costs.
Can I use local files from a Puppeteer script connected to Browserless?
Not as if the browser were local: the browser runs remotely, so local paths on your application machine are not available on the browser machine.
