Reset the nested chat history before capturing it
When a chat panel scrolls independently of the document, changing the page’s scroll position will not reset the panel. Locate the history element and set its scrollTop directly:

Use a stable selector from the application, such as a test ID, or a role/name locator that uniquely identifies the history region. Playwright’s input guide documents using Locator.evaluate to change a scrolling container’s position. The Locator API documents locator screenshots; for a scrollable element, the capture reflects the content visible at its current scroll position.

Use that element in your Playwright locator. A test ID is often a good choice when the application exposes one; otherwise, choose a locator that uniquely identifies the history region.

Set its
scrollTopto zero, then capture the element or page scope that matches what you need to show.
If setting scrollTop does not move the history, the interface may handle scrolling through wheel events or may update the DOM as messages load. In that case, use wheel input and wait for an application-specific loading signal before taking the screenshot. Playwright documents both direct position changes and Mouse.wheel as precise scrolling techniques, but which one works depends on the application.

Playwright describes fullPage: true as capturing the full scrollable page. It is not a substitute for moving an independently scrolling chat panel to its top. See the screenshot documentation.
Direct position change or wheel input?
Set scrollTop for a normal scroll container
Direct assignment is concise when the history uses a regular scrollable element and its desired messages are already present. After assignment, verify the position or visible content before capture if your script depends on a particular state.
Use wheel input when the application responds to scrolling
Wheel input can be appropriate when the interface’s own scroll handling needs to run, or when scrolling triggers message loading. For example, after locating the history, scroll it upward with the mouse and wait on a signal specific to the application:

await history.screenshot({ path: 'chat-top.png' });The wheel amount and the condition to wait for are application-dependent; this example does not guarantee that one wheel event reaches the top. If older messages load incrementally, continue scrolling and wait for the app’s loading signal until the intended content is present. The behavior of any specific chat’s virtualization or loading trigger cannot be inferred without inspecting that application.
Common problems and fixes

The page moves, but the chat does not. You probably targeted the document or an outer wrapper. Find the descendant whose
scrollTopchanges during a manual scroll and target that element. -
The screenshot still shows the middle of the history. Confirm that the locator matches the actual scroll container and that the scroll-position change has taken effect before capturing. If the app overrides or handles scrolling, try wheel input instead.

The top messages are missing. A chat may load older content only as the user scrolls. A position assignment cannot guarantee those messages have been fetched; scroll through the app’s loading behavior and wait for its own completion signal.

fullPage: truedoes not show all chat messages. That option concerns the full scrollable page, not necessarily an inner panel’s independent scroll range. Reset or scroll the panel itself, and choose an element or viewport capture as appropriate.Best Value
