FFmpeg writes its log output to stderr by default. To see it, inspect the terminal or the cloud runtime that captured the process’s standard error. To keep a report, use FFmpeg’s -report option or configure FFREPORT; to see output in a cloud log viewer, make sure the host or logging agent is actually collecting and forwarding it.
Where FFmpeg logs appear
The right place to look depends on how FFmpeg was started. Its own output and the cloud platform’s retained logs are not automatically the same thing.

- Interactive terminal: inspect the terminal where FFmpeg is running. By default, FFmpeg logs to
stderr. - Service, container, scheduled job, or managed runtime: inspect that runtime’s captured process output, if it collects and retains standard error.
- Report file: look in FFmpeg’s current working directory for the file created by
-report, or the path selected withFFREPORT. - Cloud log viewer: use it only for output the platform’s configured collector or logging agent has received. A report file is not automatically uploaded to cloud logging.
Save FFmpeg output to a report file
Use the timestamped report option
Add -report to the FFmpeg command. FFmpeg saves the full command line and log output to a file named with the program name and a timestamp in the current directory. This option also changes verbosity to debug, so the report may contain more detail than you need for routine monitoring. Check the process’s working directory when locating the file.
ffmpeg -report -i input.mp4 output
Choose a filename and log level with FFREPORT
Set the FFREPORT environment variable to choose a report filename and verbosity. For example, this requests an info-level report named ffreport.log:

FFREPORT=file=ffreport.log:level=32 ffmpeg -i input.mp4 output
In FFmpeg’s log levels, 32 means info. The variable’s value uses delimiters, and shells have their own quoting and escaping rules; adapt the example to the shell and environment where FFmpeg runs. FFmpeg recognizes levels including quiet, panic, fatal, error, warning, info, verbose, debug, and trace. Start with info for routine operation; try verbose or debug when you need more context. The time and datetime prefixes can help correlate log lines with cloud or stream events.

That documentation is regenerated nightly and corresponds to the newest revision; packaged builds may differ, so consult the documentation for your installed FFmpeg version when an option behaves differently.

Find output in the cloud runtime
- Identify how FFmpeg was launched. Determine whether it runs in an interactive shell, system service, container, scheduled job, or managed runtime.
- Check what the runtime captures. Confirm whether it collects stdout, stderr, or both, and whether it retains or forwards those streams. Do not assume that a cloud provider’s log viewer receives FFmpeg output automatically.
- Check the report file separately. If you used
-reportorFFREPORT, locate the file in the process’s working directory or configure the host to collect that file. A file on the server and a cloud log entry are different destinations. - Verify the viewer’s scope and filters. If expected entries are missing, check the selected account or project, resource, time range, permissions, forwarding agent, and any filters or exclusions.
Google Compute Engine
On a Compute Engine VM, console output may not appear in Logs Explorer. Google documents a Serial port 1 (console) view on the VM instances page; serial-port output can also be configured for Cloud Logging. For retained entries, open Logs Explorer and select the correct project, resource, and time range before applying filters. Some configurations use the Ops Agent to send application stdout or stderr to the project, but that forwarding must be configured, and visibility also depends on IAM permissions and the selected scope.

Start with the task, pod, or container log view provided by the platform. Such views commonly depend on a configured log driver, agent, or service to collect process output. AWS documentation describes ECS and EKS routes to CloudWatch; Google documents stdout/stderr ingestion through the Ops Agent in some configurations. The exact steps depend on the deployment’s platform and logging setup, so do not treat one provider’s route as instructions for another.

Choose the right log path
| Log path | Live visibility | Persistence after exit | What must be configured |
|---|---|---|---|
| Terminal stderr | Immediate when FFmpeg is attached to a visible terminal | Not guaranteed | Keep the terminal or its output capture available |
-report or FFREPORT file |
Not a cloud viewer by itself | File remains where written, subject to host storage and cleanup | Use the current working directory or selected report path; configure collection separately if needed |
| Cloud log viewer | Available after the runtime forwards captured output | Depends on the platform’s retention configuration | Configure and verify the relevant collector, agent, or runtime logging |
Separate FFmpeg logs from YouTube stream health
FFmpeg logs show what the FFmpeg process reports; cloud host logs show what the runtime or configured collector captured. Neither alone establishes exactly what YouTube received or displayed. Use YouTube’s own live-stream health information for the platform-side view, and consult current YouTube documentation for its interface and indicators.

If your goal is to keep uploaded videos looping on a YouTube channel rather than operate FFmpeg yourself, StreamNeo is a separate option: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. It runs the loop in the cloud, so nothing has to stay on at home; it plays uploaded videos, not a live camera feed.
