How to View, Edit, and Delete Saved Passwords on a Mac

Use the Passwords app on macOS Sequoia, or Passwords settings in System Settings or Safari on Sonoma and earlier, to manage saved logins.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

On a Mac running macOS Sequoia, open the Passwords app, authenticate with Touch ID or your Mac account password, then select a saved account. On macOS Sonoma or earlier, use System Settings or Safari settings instead. You can reveal or edit a saved login there; deleting it removes the saved entry, not usually the password on the website itself.

Find saved passwords on your Mac

The steps depend on your macOS version. Apple’s current instructions use the Passwords app on macOS Sequoia and identify the settings routes below for Sonoma or earlier. See Apple’s Mac password instructions.

macOS version Where to open saved passwords
macOS Sequoia Open the Passwords app.
macOS Sonoma or earlier Choose Apple menu > System Settings > Passwords, or open Safari > Settings > Passwords.
  1. Open the appropriate Passwords screen for your macOS version.
  2. Authenticate with Touch ID or your Mac user account password when prompted.
  3. Select an account or website to open its saved details. In the Passwords app, select All to browse all entries, or use search to find a specific one.

The Passwords app can hold website and app passwords, passkeys, verification codes, Wi-Fi passwords, Sign in with Apple entries, and credentials shared with groups. Apple describes its features in the Passwords User Guide.

See a saved password

In the Passwords app, select the account under All, then hover over the dots beside Password to reveal the saved value. On Sonoma or earlier, open the account or website details from System Settings > Passwords or Safari > Settings > Passwords and authenticate if prompted.

Edit a saved password or account

  1. Select the saved account in Passwords, System Settings, or Safari’s Passwords screen, depending on your macOS version.
  2. Choose Edit.
  3. Change the saved details, then choose Save.

Editing the entry on your Mac updates what is stored in Passwords. If you need to change the actual login credential, change it with the website or app too; editing a saved entry by itself does not change the password held by that service.

Delete a saved password or passkey

  1. In the Passwords app, select the account containing the item.
  2. Choose Edit, then choose Delete Password or Delete Passkey.
  3. Confirm the deletion.

Deleting a saved item from Passwords or iCloud Keychain generally does not remove the password or passkey from the website or app where it was created. It removes the saved credential, so you may need to enter it manually or save it again next time. Apple notes an exception for Sign in with Apple accounts. Details are in Apple’s instructions for removing a password or passkey.

Why you can’t find a saved password

  • Check All: You may be viewing a narrower group or category. In Passwords, select All and search again.
  • Check Deleted or Recently Deleted: The entry may have been removed. Look in the deleted-items area of Passwords if available.
  • Check iCloud Keychain: If you expect the entry to appear across Apple devices, confirm that Passwords is enabled in iCloud settings and that you are signed in to the same Apple Account.
  • Check shared-group compatibility: A shared credential may only appear on devices running compatible software.
  • Consider where it was saved: If you use another password manager or browser profile, the login may not be stored in Apple Passwords.

Apple’s Passwords settings guide covers Passwords settings on Mac, including iCloud syncing and security options.

Use Passwords security features thoughtfully

Passwords includes a Security section with recommendations about weak passwords, and settings for detecting passwords that appear in known data leaks, suggesting strong passwords, and creating passkeys automatically. These tools can help you spot issues, but they do not guarantee that an account is secure. Review alerts and change a compromised password with the relevant service.
