How to Vibe-Code a Small Game With an AI Coding Assistant

The reliable way to vibe-code a small game is to treat the AI assistant as a fast, supervised collaborator—not as an autonomous game studio. Choose one tiny game loop, describe it in plain language, ask for a staged plan, generate one playable slice, run it yourself, and report specific behavior, errors, or screenshots. Add one change at a time and keep a working checkpoint after each successful iteration.

This approach works whether you use a browser stack such as p5.js, a repository in an IDE, Roblox Studio, a Decentraland scene, or a local coding workflow. The assistant can write and explain code quickly, but you remain responsible for scope, playtesting, debugging decisions, and the final release.

What “vibe-coding” a game actually means

Vibe coding means building software through a conversation with an AI assistant instead of writing every line manually. You describe the desired result, the assistant proposes or edits code, you run that code, and the next prompt is based on what really happened. For a game, that conversation usually covers rules, controls, scenes, scripts, assets, debugging, and deployment.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The important word is conversation. A single request such as “make me a complete platform game” gives the model too many unresolved decisions: screen size, physics, collision rules, level structure, art, sound, restart behavior, and the runtime itself. The output may look impressive while containing mutually inconsistent assumptions. A short plan-build-test-refine loop exposes those assumptions while the project is still small enough to repair.

Vibe coding also does not remove the need for programming judgment. A 26 June 2025 empirical study describes the work as shifting expertise toward context management, rapid evaluation, and deciding when to let the assistant continue and when to edit manually. You can be new to programming and still use the method, but you must be willing to test every change and make explicit decisions.

Pick a project that can become playable in one sitting

Your first project should have one core loop and one clearly bounded play space. Good candidates include a one-screen arcade game, a maze, a simple platformer, a puzzle, or an obstacle course (obby). A small p5.js game, a Roblox obby, and a Decentraland labyrinth or platformer all fit this shape.

Use these limits for the first version:

  • One level, room, or screen.
  • One primary action, such as moving, jumping, matching, or avoiding.
  • A small number of assets that can be represented with simple shapes or placeholders.
  • One understandable objective.
  • A reachable win state and a reachable lose state.
  • A restart path that returns the game to a known initial state.

Do not start with a campaign, inventory system, online multiplayer, procedural world, or elaborate character creator. Those features multiply the amount of state the assistant must keep in context and make it harder to identify which change caused a failure.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Write a compact design brief before you prompt

Spend a few minutes defining the game in language a non-programmer could understand. This brief becomes the stable context you paste into later conversations.

  • Player goal: what the player is trying to accomplish.
  • Controls: the input method and the action for each input.
  • Win condition: the exact event that ends a successful run.
  • Lose condition: the exact event that ends an unsuccessful run.
  • Space: one screen, one room, one level, or another explicit boundary.
  • Visual direction: for example, flat geometric shapes, bright pixel art, or a dark maze.
  • Runtime: browser, Roblox, Decentraland, or a local application.
  • Definition of done: the observable behavior that proves the first version works.

Keep the first brief short enough to reread before every prompt. If you change the rules, update the brief first; otherwise the assistant may continue implementing an obsolete version of the game.

Choose the assistant and runtime by the project you want

There is no universally best assistant. The right choice depends on where the game will run, how much project context the tool can inspect, and how comfortable you are with setup and source control.

Route Best fit Setup and strengths Trade-offs
Gemini with p5.js and optional Firebase Hosting Fast browser prototype Google documents browser-only development, iterative prompting, p5.js testing, and optional Firebase deployment. The first phase requires a browser and computer. Generated output is nondeterministic; Google’s codelab warns against production use without appropriate review.
GitHub Copilot in VS Code or JetBrains A repository-based project with source control Supports planning, code generation, testing, debugging, iteration, review, and Git commits inside a supported IDE. Requires a Copilot plan, supported IDE, and some familiarity with Copilot Chat.
Roblox Studio Assistant A 3D or social Roblox game Provides a platform-aware Plan, Build, Playtest, Refine, and Polish workflow inside Roblox Studio. Uses Roblox’s runtime, assets, and publishing model.
Decentraland Creator Hub Assistant A browser-based 3D scene or multiplayer-oriented prototype Generates SDK7 scene code, previews work, and offers installable SDK skills. The assistant is experimental; scene limits remain, and complex logic may need manual refinement.
Mistral Vibe Code A local or remote repository workflow CLI, VS Code extension, and web modes can read files, run commands, review, and debug under your approvals. You must choose an interface and configure the coding environment.

Compare candidates on six practical questions: Where will the game run? Can the assistant see the relevant files and assets? How easily can you playtest? Is there a source-control workflow? How will you deploy? How much manual setup can you handle?

Ask for a plan before asking for code

Start by giving the assistant your brief and requesting a short implementation plan. Ask it to list assumptions and to stop after the first step. Roblox’s beginner workflow specifically recommends planning first, building the world and gameplay gradually, and postponing interface, scoring, and win-or-lose systems until the basic play works.

This prompt pattern keeps the conversation bounded:

You are my game-development partner. Help me build a one-screen [genre] game.
Player goal: [goal]. Controls: [controls]. Win condition: [condition].
Lose condition: [condition]. Art direction: [style]. Runtime: [browser/engine].
First, propose a five-step plan and list assumptions. Then implement only step 1.
After I run it, wait for my exact error messages, screenshots, and playtest notes.
Do not add new features until the current step works.

Replace every bracketed item with a concrete decision. “Make it fun” is not a testable requirement; “collect five stars before the timer reaches zero” is. Tell the assistant which files it may create or edit, what it must leave untouched, and whether placeholders are acceptable.

Build a vertical slice, not a collection of disconnected features

A vertical slice is a tiny version that exercises the entire basic loop from start to finish. For a one-screen game, it should normally include the following pieces in this order.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

1. A visible play space

Generate the canvas, room, or level boundary first. Ask the assistant to describe the coordinate system or scene hierarchy it is using. A visible boundary makes later collision and camera problems easier to diagnose.

2. Player movement

Add one controllable player and the smallest input set your design needs. Test each input separately. Confirm that the player starts in a safe location, moves at a predictable speed, and cannot leave the intended play area.

3. Collision or interaction rules

Next, add the walls, platforms, hazards, or interactable objects that make the movement meaningful. Ask for a plain-language explanation of what counts as a collision and which object owns that rule. If the player passes through an obstacle, report the exact location and action rather than asking for a broad rewrite.

4. One objective

Add the collectible, destination, switch, target, or survival condition that defines success. The objective should be visible or discoverable without reading source code.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

5. Clear end states

Implement a win state and a lose state, then add restart behavior. During testing, deliberately trigger both states. A game that can be played but never clearly ends is not a complete slice.

  • [Dont Hesite to Order] 24 hours customer services and professional technology team are standing by

Leave menus, score streaks, particle effects, multiple levels, sound, and elaborate art until this slice survives repeated play. Each extra subsystem creates another place for generated code to disagree with the existing state.

Run the game immediately and send evidence back

Do not evaluate generated code only by reading it. Open the game in its normal runtime and perform representative actions: start a run, use every control, contact an obstacle, reach the objective, lose, and restart. Google’s p5.js workflow has you test the generated code and paste JavaScript errors or screenshots back into Gemini. GitHub’s guidance likewise recommends opening the application in a normal browser, trying representative actions, and reporting errors for debugging.

Your feedback should be concrete and reproducible:

  • State the starting condition.
  • Name the exact input or sequence of inputs.
  • Describe what you expected.
  • Describe what happened instead.
  • Include the full console error, if one appears.
  • Attach a screenshot when layout or visual state is part of the problem.
  • Say whether the problem happens every time or only after a particular sequence.

For example: “After collecting the third coin, pressing R does not reset the timer; the console shows the following error” gives the assistant a useful boundary. “It is broken” does not.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Iterate with the smallest possible change

Once the first slice runs, name one observed problem per prompt. Ask for the smallest fix that addresses that problem, request an explanation of the files changed, and retest before moving on. If several issues are visible, fix the one that prevents meaningful play first.

Keep a reversible history. In a repository, commit every successful iteration. A useful commit message identifies the behavior, such as “player stops at room boundary” or “restart resets timer.” If a generated change introduces a regression, revert to the last working checkpoint instead of asking the assistant to untangle many overlapping edits.

Have the assistant show the diff or summarize the touched files. This makes accidental changes to configuration, asset paths, or unrelated systems easier to spot. It also preserves the project context when you start a later conversation.

Tool-specific ways to work

Gemini, p5.js, and browser hosting

Google’s codelab demonstrates a browser-first path: generate a small p5.js game, test it in the browser, and iterate by returning errors or screenshots to Gemini. This is a practical choice when you want to avoid installing an engine. Once the game is stable enough to share, Firebase Hosting is the documented optional deployment path in that codelab.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The codelab also identifies the Gemini 2.5 launch date as 25 March 2025 and warns that generated output is nondeterministic and should not be used in production without appropriate review. Treat the browser prototype as a learning and validation environment until you have checked the code, dependencies, error handling, and deployment configuration yourself.

GitHub Copilot in an IDE

Use the repository as the source of truth. Put the design brief in a project document, ask Copilot to inspect the existing structure before creating files, and request a plan that names the files for each step. Run the game from the IDE or its normal browser target after every change, then commit successful iterations. This route is strongest when you want a conventional project history and the ability to review diffs, but it assumes you can operate a supported IDE and understand the basics of the Copilot Chat workflow.

Roblox Studio Assistant

Roblox’s documented workflow is Plan, Build, Playtest, Refine, and Polish. Begin with the world and the main gameplay action. Use Studio’s built-in playtest tools to verify movement, collisions, objectives, and end states before asking for interface, scoring, or cosmetic work. Assistant can help troubleshoot and refine, but you still playtest its work and use Studio’s tools to customize the final experience.

Decentraland Creator Hub Assistant

For a scene-based prototype, state the intended scene boundaries and interaction rules before requesting SDK7 code. Use the preview to check spatial layout and interaction, and keep the first scene within the platform’s limits. The assistant is experimental, so expect to manually refine complex logic and confirm that generated code matches the SDK version and scene structure you are using.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Mistral Vibe Code

This workflow can operate through a CLI, a VS Code extension, or the web. Whichever interface you choose, approve commands deliberately, ask it to identify the files it read and changed, and keep the repository in a known-good state before each task. Its ability to run commands and inspect a project is useful for debugging, but it also makes approval and review especially important.

Use an acceptance checklist before polishing

Run this checklist after each substantial feature and again before publishing:

  • The game starts cleanly from the saved project.
  • Every documented control responds consistently.
  • The objective is understandable without inspecting code.
  • A player can reach the win state.
  • A player can reach the lose state, if the design includes one.
  • Restart returns the game to its initial state.
  • No console errors appear during normal play.
  • Important text, targets, and hazards are visible and distinguishable.
  • The saved project can reproduce the same build or scene on a fresh run.
  • The assistant has explained the changes and the files or commands it touched.

When a check fails, turn it into a narrow debugging prompt. Ask the assistant to identify the likely cause, propose the smallest change, and explain how you will verify the fix. Do not accept a large refactor merely because it produces a clean-looking response.

Polish only after the loop is reliable

Once the acceptance checklist passes, add presentation and quality improvements in separate iterations. Introduce interface elements such as a title, score, timer, or instructions; then sound; then difficulty tuning; then art replacements and effects. Test after each category rather than changing all of them at once.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Accessibility belongs in this phase as a functional requirement, not as decoration. Check that instructions are readable, important states are not communicated only by color, controls are discoverable, and the game remains understandable when effects or sound are unavailable. Ask the assistant to propose concrete changes and then verify them in the running game.

For publishing, follow the runtime’s supported path. A browser prototype can use the Firebase Hosting path documented by Google’s codelab. Roblox and Decentraland have their own platform-specific publishing models. A local or repository-based project needs a reproducible build and a clear way for another person to launch it. Do not call a game published merely because the assistant generated files; confirm that the deployed or shared version starts, plays, ends, and restarts as expected.

Common failure modes and recovery strategies

The assistant adds too much at once

Symptom: You receive many files and features, but no stable playable loop. Recovery: revert to the last working checkpoint and request only the next vertical-slice step. Require a plan and an explicit stop after that step.

The game contradicts the brief

Symptom: Controls, win conditions, or level boundaries change between prompts. Recovery: paste the current brief, state which rule is authoritative, and ask the assistant to list its assumptions before editing.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A visual problem hides a logic problem

Symptom: An object appears in the wrong place, or a collision seems inconsistent. Recovery: ask for debug labels, temporary outlines, or logged coordinates, then remove those aids after verifying the rule.

A fix breaks a previously working feature

Symptom: Movement works, but restart or scoring fails after a later edit. Recovery: inspect the diff, return to the last successful commit, and reapply one smaller change.

The generated code depends on an assumption you did not make

Symptom: The assistant references an asset, API, file, or engine feature that is absent in your project. Recovery: ask it to enumerate dependencies and replace unavailable pieces with the simplest supported alternative. Confirm the runtime and version in the prompt.

What AI can and cannot do for a first game

An assistant is excellent at turning a clear description into a draft, explaining unfamiliar syntax, producing repetitive scaffolding, and suggesting focused fixes. It can also help you compare implementation options and maintain a checklist.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

It cannot reliably infer your intended feel, notice every frustrating interaction, guarantee that generated code is secure or maintainable, or prove that a game works on every target environment. Google, Roblox, and Decentraland all put human testing or preview in their workflows, and Google specifically cautions about nondeterministic output. Your job is to supply context, evaluate behavior quickly, control scope, and decide when manual editing is safer than another generated patch.

The best first project is therefore not the one with the most ambitious prompt. It is the smallest game whose complete loop you can run, understand, and improve. When that loop is stable, the assistant becomes genuinely useful: each new feature has a clear purpose, a testable boundary, and a reversible path back to working code.
