How to Verify XRP Ledger Transactions with a Trusted Block Explorer

A practical guide to checking XRP Ledger transactions by hash, distinguishing found from validated and successful, confirming delivered amounts, and resolving explorer discrepancies.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

To verify an XRP Ledger transaction, search its transaction hash, then check five things: the returned hash matches, the transaction is marked validated: true, a ledger index is shown, TransactionResult reports the outcome you expect, and a Payment’s delivered_amount shows what the destination actually received. For high-stakes checks, repeat the lookup with a direct xrpld tx request. A wallet’s submission message or an explorer’s “found” status is not, by itself, proof that the transaction is final or successful.

What a reliable verification must establish

Verification answers several different questions. Keeping them separate prevents the most common mistakes when checking a withdrawal, deposit, payment, or exchange transfer.

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

  • Identity: Is the returned transaction the one you intended to inspect? Compare the complete transaction hash, not just a shortened display.
  • Finality: Has the transaction entered a validated ledger? Require an explicit validated indication. A result that can be looked up is not necessarily final.
  • Outcome: Did ledger processing succeed? Read TransactionResult. A transaction can be validated even when its result code indicates failure.
  • Settlement: For a Payment, what amount reached the destination? Use delivered_amount, particularly when partial-payment behavior is possible, rather than relying only on the requested Amount.
  • Ledger context: Which ledger contains the transaction? A ledger index identifies its sequence position; a ledger hash identifies that ledger’s contents.

The XRP Ledger documentation summarizes the distinction with the sentence, “Submission and verification are two separate procedures.” A wallet or service can report that it submitted a transaction before the network has placed it in a validated ledger.

Use the transaction hash, not an account or amount search

The transaction hash is the public identifier used by the XRPL tx method. Obtain it from the wallet, exchange, or other transaction record, and copy it exactly. Account histories and amount searches can return many transactions; they do not prove that a particular transfer is the one you are investigating.

Protect your credentials while looking up a transaction

  • Enter only the public transaction hash into an explorer or API request.
  • Never enter a recovery phrase, secret key, signing key, password, or wallet backup into a lookup page.
  • Be cautious with links received in messages. If you use an explorer, navigate to its domain yourself and verify that it supports the XRP Ledger network you intended to use.
  • A hardware wallet is not required to inspect public ledger data. Verification is a read-only activity.

Route 1: verify through a block-explorer interface

An explorer is a convenient presentation layer over ledger data. Its labels and layout can differ, so use the underlying fields rather than trusting a badge, color, or search ranking.

  1. Open the explorer’s transaction-search page.
  2. Paste the complete transaction hash and submit the search.
  3. Confirm that the returned hash exactly matches the hash you copied. Stop if it does not; you may be viewing a different transaction or network.
  4. Find the validation indicator. Treat the transaction as final only when the result explicitly indicates that it is validated, such as validated: true.
  5. Record the ledger index or equivalent in-ledger value shown with the transaction.
  6. Read TransactionResult. A code such as tesSUCCESS indicates success in the documented example. Any other code requires you to treat the operation as unsuccessful unless you understand the specific code.
  7. If the transaction is a Payment, inspect delivered_amount and compare the destination address and payment details with your intended transfer.

If the page shows the transaction but does not expose validation state or the result code, it is incomplete evidence. Use a direct server lookup rather than inferring finality from the page’s existence.

Route 2: query an XRPL server directly

The documented XRPL tx request retrieves a transaction by hash. Official XRPL guidance characterizes a direct xrpld lookup as the most direct and authoritative result path. This route is less visually friendly than an explorer, but it lets you inspect the fields that determine identity, finality, outcome, and delivery.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Construct the request

Send a tx request to an XRPL server, replacing the value inside the code with the hash you need to check:

{
  "method": "tx",
  "params": [
    {
      "transaction": "{{TRANSACTION_HASH}}"
    }
  ]
}

The response should be evaluated as data, not as a human-friendly status sentence. Locate the returned transaction hash, its validation indication, its ledger index or in-ledger value, and its result code. For a Payment, locate the delivered amount in the transaction’s metadata.

Interpret the direct response

  1. Hash: Compare it character for character with the hash in your request.
  2. Validation: Require validated: true before calling the result final.
  3. Ledger location: Note the ledger index. It shows the transaction’s position in the chain and provides a reference for later comparisons.
  4. Result code: Read TransactionResult independently of validation. tesSUCCESS is the documented success example; a different code means the transaction did not achieve that successful outcome.
  5. Payment delivery: Use delivered_amount to determine what reached the destination.

Direct server responses are authoritative for the server and ledger context you queried. The official material distinguishes them from exported database or Data API interfaces, which it describes as non-authoritative. That distinction matters when a cached or indexed display conflicts with the ledger response.

How to read the decisive fields

Transaction hash: identity

The hash answers “which transaction is this?” It does not answer whether the transaction succeeded. A page can display a transaction with the wrong hash, a truncated hash that is difficult to compare, or data from a different network. Always expand or copy the full value before accepting the result.

validated: finality

Validation means the transaction is included in a validated ledger. Until that indication is present, the outcome is not final under XRPL guidance. A transaction may be visible while it is still pending, while a server is returning provisional information, or while an indexing service has noticed it before final ledger confirmation.

TransactionResult: processing outcome

Validation and success are separate properties. A failed transaction can still be recorded in a validated ledger. Therefore, “validated” means the ledger has finalized the recorded result; it does not mean the requested operation succeeded. Read the result code after checking validation.

Ledger index and ledger hash: context

A ledger index is the ledger’s sequence position. A ledger hash identifies the contents of that particular ledger. Ledgers on different chains can share an index while having different hashes, so an index alone is not a complete identity when you are comparing networks or investigating a discrepancy. Record both whenever the interface provides them.

delivered_amount: actual Payment receipt

For Payment transactions, the requested Amount describes what the transaction attempted to send, while delivered_amount records what the destination actually received. This distinction is essential for partial payments. A Payment can be valid and successful while delivering less than the amount a sender or application initially displayed. Verify the destination and currency representation alongside the delivered amount.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Found, validated, and successful are different states

These states should not be collapsed into one label:

What you observe What it establishes What it does not establish
A lookup returns a transaction The queried service has data for that hash That the transaction is final or successful
validated: true The recorded transaction is in a validated ledger That the requested operation succeeded
A success result such as tesSUCCESS The ledger processing result is successful That the destination received the requested amount in every Payment case
delivered_amount is present for a Payment The amount recorded as delivered to the destination That the amount matches the sender’s requested Amount

Explorer convenience versus direct-server authority

Both routes can begin with the same hash, but they serve different needs.

Lookup route Strength Limitation to account for
Block-explorer interface Easy search, readable labels, and a quick visual overview of transaction and ledger fields The interface may hide validation, result, metadata, or network details; the official documentation does not certify a specific public explorer
Direct xrpld tx request Most direct and authoritative result path according to XRPL documentation, with fields available for independent interpretation Requires you to read structured data and identify the relevant fields yourself

Use an explorer for convenience, then use the direct request when the transfer is consequential, the page is ambiguous, or two displays disagree. “Trusted” should describe a verifiable workflow, not a logo, a familiar design, or an unexamined “verified” badge.

What makes an explorer trustworthy in practice?

No public interface should be treated as conclusive merely because it is popular or appears in search results. Evaluate the evidence it exposes. A useful explorer should let you see the complete transaction hash, the network or chain context, a validation state, the containing ledger, the result code, and relevant Payment metadata. If it reduces all of those facts to a single green “complete” label, use it only as a starting point.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Look for consistency rather than branding. The hash returned by the page must be identical to the hash supplied by the wallet or service. The ledger index should be plausible alongside the displayed ledger hash when both are available. A Payment view should identify the destination and show the delivered value, not just the sender’s requested amount. When those details are absent, the direct tx response is the safer evidence.

The official documentation does not audit or certify a named third-party explorer. Therefore, do not promise that any particular website is permanently accurate, available, or operating on the network you need. Confirm the network selection yourself and use a direct server query for consequential decisions.

A disciplined workflow for deposits, withdrawals, and disputes

  1. Collect the public record. Obtain the hash from the transaction receipt, wallet history, exchange withdrawal record, or other originating service. Do not substitute an account address or an amount.
  2. Check the network. Make sure the explorer or server is querying the XRP Ledger network on which the transaction was submitted. A matching-looking index from another chain is not evidence for your transfer.
  3. Perform the first lookup. Search the full hash in the explorer or send the tx request.
  4. Confirm identity. Compare the response hash in full. If it differs, stop and resolve the mismatch before reading any other field.
  5. Confirm finality. Find validated: true and record the ledger index. A submission acknowledgment, a pending badge, or a page that simply loads does not meet this test.
  6. Confirm outcome. Read the exact TransactionResult. Treat a non-success result as a failed operation even when the record is validated.
  7. Confirm settlement. For a Payment, compare the destination and currency details and use delivered_amount to determine receipt.
  8. Escalate when needed. For a substantial balance, accounting entry, time-sensitive withdrawal, or dispute, repeat every check against a direct XRPL server and preserve both responses.

This sequence prevents a common error: announcing that a payment “went through” after seeing only a submission ID or a transaction page. The conclusion should identify whether it was found, validated, successful, and how much was delivered.

Cross-checking an explorer result

Repeat the lookup against a direct XRPL server when the transaction affects a substantial balance, a time-sensitive withdrawal, an accounting record, or a dispute. Compare the same facts on both responses:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. The complete transaction hash.
  2. The validation indication.
  3. The ledger index and, where available, ledger hash.
  4. TransactionResult.
  5. For a Payment, the destination, currency details, and delivered_amount.

If the explorer and direct response disagree, do not choose the more reassuring display. Preserve both responses, note the time and server or network queried, and investigate the ledger context. A cached index, a network-selection error, an unvalidated transaction, or a display that omits failed results can all create an apparent contradiction. Until the direct ledger evidence is reconciled, do not tell a sender that the payment is final and successful.

Troubleshooting common verification problems

The hash cannot be found

Re-copy the hash from the original wallet or service record and check every character. Confirm that the lookup is for the XRP Ledger network you used. A submission message may exist before a transaction is available in the queried service. If the hash remains unavailable, obtain the direct transaction record from the submitting service and retry the documented tx request.

The transaction is found but not validated

Do not treat it as final. Continue checking the validation field rather than relying on elapsed time or an explorer’s visual status. A transaction’s appearance in a lookup result is not a substitute for validated-ledger inclusion.

The transaction is validated but the result is not successful

Read the exact TransactionResult and treat the recorded outcome as failed unless the code’s meaning is clear and applicable to your case. Validation confirms that the failed result is final; it does not convert it into a successful payment.

The requested amount differs from the received amount

For a Payment, inspect delivered_amount and verify the destination and currency. Do not infer receipt from the requested Amount, especially where partial-payment behavior can apply.

The explorer and server show different ledger information

Compare hashes first, then validation, ledger identity, result code, and Payment metadata. Check whether one display is using an exported or indexed data source rather than the direct server result. Keep the direct response as the primary reference while you resolve the mismatch.

The page shows a shortened or incomplete record

Expand the transaction details or copy the raw response if possible. A shortened hash, omitted metadata, or a generic status label prevents an independent check. Do not fill missing fields with assumptions; move to a direct server response.

The destination appears correct but the currency representation is unclear

Inspect the Payment metadata and the delivered amount together. Verify the destination address and the currency representation shown by the response. An address match alone does not establish that the expected asset amount was delivered.

Costs, equipment, and information requirements

Transaction verification is a read-only activity. It does not require signing a transaction, connecting a hardware wallet, buying software, or revealing a recovery phrase. The essential input is the public transaction hash and, for a meaningful settlement check, the intended destination and payment details. If an interface asks for a secret key or recovery phrase to display a transaction, leave it.

The practical choice is between a convenient explorer page and a direct server query. The official workflow does not require a purchase or a special device. Any service-specific access limits or operational terms should be checked separately, but they do not change which fields establish identity, finality, outcome, and delivery.

A practical verification record

For a repeatable audit trail, save the following information with the transaction record:

  • Full transaction hash.
  • Network or chain used for the lookup.
  • Validation state.
  • Ledger index and ledger hash when available.
  • Exact TransactionResult.
  • Destination address and Payment details.
  • delivered_amount for a Payment.
  • The lookup route used and, for a direct request, the server response.

Also record which fields were visible and the time of the check. This makes it clear whether a later discrepancy came from a different network, an unvalidated response, or a display that omitted metadata. Keep the record free of secrets. It lets another person reproduce the check without receiving any credential and prevents a later screenshot or shortened hash from being mistaken for the original evidence.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Final verification checklist

  1. Start with the public transaction hash supplied by the wallet, exchange, or transaction record.
  2. Search the hash in an explorer or send the documented XRPL tx request.
  3. Match the returned hash exactly.
  4. Confirm the intended network and note the ledger index and ledger hash when available.
  5. Require an explicit validated indication before calling the transaction final.
  6. Read TransactionResult; do not equate validation with success.
  7. For a Payment, verify the destination and use delivered_amount for the amount actually received.
  8. For consequential or unclear cases, compare the explorer display with a direct xrpld response.
  9. Preserve the relevant response fields and never provide a recovery phrase or secret key to perform a lookup.

The dependable conclusion is therefore specific: the transaction is final only when its hash matches and it is validated; it is successful only when its result code indicates success; and a Payment’s actual receipt is established by its delivered amount. A block explorer can make those facts easy to read, but the direct XRPL server response is the authoritative cross-check when certainty matters.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I check whether my XRP transaction went through?

Copy the transaction hash from your wallet or service record and look it up. Confirm that the returned hash matches, validated is true, a ledger index is shown, and TransactionResult indicates success. For a Payment, check delivered_amount to verify what the destination received.

Does a transaction appearing in an explorer mean it is final?

No. A lookup can return a transaction before it is included in a validated ledger. Require an explicit validated indication such as validated: true.

Can a validated XRP Ledger transaction still fail?

Yes. Validation establishes that the recorded result is final, not that the requested operation succeeded. Read TransactionResult separately; a code such as tesSUCCESS is the documented success example.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Why is the delivered amount different from the Amount field?

For Payments, Amount describes what the transaction attempted to send, while delivered_amount records what reached the destination. Partial-payment behavior can make the delivered value lower than the requested value.

Is a block explorer more authoritative than an XRPL server query?

An explorer is a convenient display layer. XRPL documentation identifies a direct xrpld lookup as the most direct and authoritative route, while exported database and Data API interfaces are described as non-authoritative. Use the direct response when the matter is consequential or displays disagree.

What should I do if an explorer and direct query disagree?

Compare the full hash, network, validation state, ledger index and hash, result code, and Payment metadata. Preserve both responses and investigate the ledger context. Do not rely on the more reassuring display until the discrepancy is resolved.

Do I need a hardware wallet or secret key to verify a transaction?

No. Verification is read-only and requires only the public transaction hash. Never enter a recovery phrase, secret key, signing key, or wallet backup into an explorer or lookup page.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What is the difference between a ledger index and ledger hash?

The ledger index identifies the ledger’s sequence position. The ledger hash identifies that ledger’s contents. Ledgers on different chains can share an index, so the hash provides important context when comparing networks.

The Bottom Line

Use the full hash to identify the record, require validated: true for finality, read TransactionResult for success, and use delivered_amount for a Payment’s actual receipt. Treat an explorer as a convenient interface and a direct xrpld tx response as the authoritative cross-check when the transaction matters.
