Yes. The ROG Xbox Ally X can play supported, locally installed PC Game Pass games without Wi‑Fi after you complete the online setup. Sign in to the Microsoft account that holds your subscription, enable Offline Permissions in the Microsoft Store, launch each game once while connected, and test it with networking disabled before travelling.
That capability is not universal. A title can still require an internet connection for online multiplayer, always-online authentication, cloud gaming, remote play, or particular modes. Offline play on the Ally X is therefore a per-game and per-mode question, not a guarantee for every item in the Game Pass catalogue.

What offline Game Pass play means on the Ally X
The Ally X is a Windows gaming handheld, so PC Game Pass titles are installed through the normal Windows and Microsoft Store ecosystem. When a qualifying game is downloaded to the handheld, its license and local game files can be checked without an active connection after you have prepared the device online.
ASUS says a logged-in Windows handheld can play qualifying Xbox, Microsoft Store and Game Pass games offline when the game has been launched within the previous 14 days. ASUS also documents a separate designated-device option for more persistent offline permissions. Only one device on an account can have that designation, and it can be changed three times per year.

The practical distinction is local installation versus streaming. A game installed on the Ally X has a chance of working offline. A game you access through Xbox Cloud Gaming is running on a remote server and cannot continue when the handheld has no internet connection.
Prepare every game before you leave
Do the following while the Ally X is online. Repeat the game-launch step for every title you expect to use, rather than assuming one successful launch unlocks the entire library.
- Install the PC Game Pass title locally. Download the complete game, its updates and any DLC you intend to use. An item that is only available as a cloud stream is not an offline installation.
- Sign in to the correct Microsoft account. Use the account associated with your Game Pass entitlement and leave the Windows handheld signed in before disconnecting.
- Turn on Offline Permissions in Microsoft Store. Open Microsoft Store, select your profile picture, choose Settings, and enable Offline Permissions.
- Launch each intended game online. Wait until the game reaches its normal start screen or playable state. This gives the Store and the game a chance to validate the entitlement while a connection is available.
- Pre-download updates and DLC. Airplane mode cannot retrieve a patch, language pack or expansion that was not already installed.
- Synchronize cloud saves. Allow the latest progress to finish uploading before you disconnect, especially if you switch between an Xbox console, another Windows PC and the Ally X.
- Perform an offline test. Turn off Wi‑Fi or enable airplane mode, then start each game. Test the exact mode you plan to play, not just the title screen.
Xbox Wire advises travellers to test games offline, pre-download updates or DLC and make sure they are signed in. That short test is the best way to discover a title-specific requirement before boarding a flight.

Which types of games work without internet?
Offline behavior depends on the game’s licensing and network design. The following distinctions are the useful ones when deciding what to install for a trip.

Xbox Wire summarizes the broad pattern this way: “While many titles work best online, most single-player games run great without a connection.” Treat that as a useful rule of thumb, not a promise for a particular game. Check the title’s own online requirements and verify the result with the offline test.
How long can the Ally X stay offline?
For a logged-in Windows handheld, ASUS specifies a recent-launch window of 14 days. In other words, a qualifying game should have been launched while online within the preceding 14 days for the documented offline allowance. If a trip extends beyond that period, plan to reconnect and launch the affected game before the window expires.
ASUS also describes a designated-device setting intended to provide more permanent offline permissions. The designation is limited to one device per Microsoft account and may be changed three times per year. Those limits matter if you regularly move the subscription between a desktop, laptop, console and handheld; choose the device you most often use away from a network.

The two mechanisms are account-level licensing controls, not a way to bypass a game’s own network requirement. Designating the Ally X cannot make an online-only multiplayer title work without servers, and it does not turn cloud streaming into a downloadable game.
What happens on a plane?
You can play a downloaded, supported Game Pass game in airplane mode if the preparation steps succeeded. Before the flight, disable Wi‑Fi while still at home or at the airport and run the title from the same Windows account you will use onboard. Open the save or level you intend to play and try any important single-player mode.
If the game starts and loads your local progress with networking disabled, the basic offline path is working. If it stops at a sign-in or connection screen, do not assume the whole Ally X is unusable. The failure may be limited to that title, a particular mode, an absent update or a licensing check that was not completed during setup.
Troubleshoot an offline launch failure
The game asks you to connect
Confirm that the title was installed locally, Offline Permissions is enabled in Microsoft Store, and the correct Microsoft account is signed in. Reconnect, launch the game successfully, close it, and repeat the airplane-mode test. A title that requires an online service will continue to refuse offline play even after these steps.

An update or DLC is missing
Reconnect and let the game finish every available update. Download expansions, language files and other optional content before leaving; offline mode cannot fetch them. Test again after the downloads complete.
Your latest save is not present
Reconnect long enough for cloud-save synchronization to finish, then close the game normally and test offline. Without that sync, the Ally X may only show the most recent save stored locally on the handheld.
Only one mode fails
That can be expected. ASUS states that not all game modes are available offline. Use the mode that worked during your test and treat multiplayer, shared-world and other connected features as unavailable until you have a network.

The trip is longer than the recent-launch window
For the documented 14-day allowance, reconnect and launch the game again before the window ends. If you rely on the designated-device option, remember that only one account device can hold it and that the setting can be changed three times each year.
Subscription, purchases and cross-device licenses
Microsoft’s usage rules describe PC Game Pass as available on compatible Windows devices. The Ally X qualifies as a Windows handheld for that type of local PC installation, but the individual game still controls whether offline use is supported.
A game purchased through Xbox or Microsoft Store can also be eligible for offline play on a logged-in Windows handheld under ASUS’s guidance. Xbox Play Anywhere is narrower: it applies only to participating games and lets you access those games across compatible Windows devices and Xbox consoles under one-device-at-a-time rules. Do not infer Play Anywhere support from the fact that a game appears in Game Pass.
These license arrangements are separate from cloud access. A cloud-playable title may be available through a subscription yet remain impossible to use on an airplane unless you also install a supported local version and complete its offline setup.

Local installation uses storage on the Ally X, so check that the handheld has room for the base game, updates and DLC. A compatible microSD card can provide additional local storage, but capacity and compatibility should be verified for the exact Ally X model and region. Storage expansion does not change a title’s online requirements.

- Need to play on a flight: choose a locally installed title, enable Offline Permissions, launch it online and verify airplane-mode play.
- Want competitive or cooperative multiplayer: plan on internet access; offline permissions cannot replace game servers.
- Considering a streamed title: streaming is not an offline option, even if the game appears in your Game Pass library.
- Switching between several Windows devices: track which device is designated for offline permissions and remember the one-device and three-change-per-year limits.
- Taking a long trip: account for ASUS’s 14-day recent-launch allowance and arrange a connection before it expires.
The reliable formula is local files plus verified licensing plus a game that does not demand a live connection. Complete all three checks before you leave, and the Ally X can serve as an offline Game Pass machine for supported games rather than merely a cloud-streaming terminal.
