Short answer: a robotaxi can involve two separate privacy layers. The vehicle may collect roadway sensor data and, under specified conditions, cabin video or audio. The booking app keeps account, payment and trip records. In a conventional rideshare, the driver receives selected details needed to complete the trip, while the platform and any payer or account owner may see additional information. No single retention period or “camera always on” rule applies across providers.
Why robotaxi privacy is a two-layer question
When you summon an autonomous vehicle, distinguish the vehicle layer from the app and account layer. Cameras, lidar, radar and other sensors can observe the road so the vehicle can navigate. The service that accepts your booking separately processes your profile, payment method, pickup and destination, device information and trip history.

A ride booked through a rideshare app can add a third policy layer: the app company may send the request to an autonomous-vehicle partner, whose own notice governs vehicle operations. Uber explicitly says its roadway-data notice is not a description of how Uber and partners collect and use data when you request or receive a ride through Uber’s apps or websites, including an autonomous-vehicle ride. Read the booking platform’s policy and the vehicle operator’s policy together.

At a glance: what each service can see
| Data stream | Robotaxi vehicle or operator | Rideshare app and driver | Typical purpose |
|---|---|---|---|
| Roadway view | Exterior cameras and other sensors can capture traffic, road users, signs, lights and plates in the vehicle’s field of view. | A driver sees the road directly; the app may collect location needed to dispatch and track the trip. | Navigation, safety, mapping, service improvement or autonomous-driving development. |
| Cabin video | May be used for safety, support, cleanliness, lost-item handling, emergencies, rule compliance or product improvement, depending on provider and event. | Not a standard driver capability. Any in-car recording depends on the vehicle, app or incident policy. | Safety and support rather than ordinary trip dispatch. |
| Cabin audio | Conditions vary. Waymo says its microphones are on during Rider Support calls or when a rider actively enables them. | Ordinary rider-driver calls can be routed without revealing the rider’s actual phone number to the driver, according to Lyft. | Support, communication or a safety investigation. |
| Account and trip records | May include pickup and drop-off, route, device location, app activity and in-vehicle interface use. | Platforms use profile, booking, payment and location data to arrange and fulfill a ride. | Booking, billing, customer support, fraud prevention and legal compliance. |
| Recipients | Service providers, selected development partners and, when legally required, government or law-enforcement recipients may be involved. | Driver, platform, payer or requesting organization, linked account owner and service providers may receive relevant details. | Delivering the ride, support, safety, disputes and compliance. |
The table describes policy categories, not a guarantee that every provider collects every category on every trip. Activation, account linkage and retention depend on the service, ride mode, location and whether an incident or support request occurs.

Are robotaxi cameras recording me?
Exterior cameras and sensors
Exterior sensing is fundamental to autonomous driving. Waymo describes cameras with a 360-degree field of view used to detect conditions such as traffic lights and road works. Uber’s separate roadway-data notice describes camera, lidar and radar recordings combined with location and time information for autonomous-driving research and development.
Those recordings can incidentally include people, vehicles and license plates outside the car. Uber says the roadway recordings are not used to identify or profile those people, but it also notes that such material may still be subject to data-protection laws. “Not used to identify” therefore does not mean “no personal data was captured.”
Cabin cameras
Cabin video is not covered by one universal robotaxi rule. Waymo lists interior-camera uses that include cleanliness checks, lost-item handling, emergencies, compliance with in-car rules, safety, support and product improvement. Its help information says support staff may review video after a rider reports an issue and may access live video in an urgent situation.
That wording describes conditional access, not a claim that a person watches every ride live. Ask which camera is present, what event activates review, whether the clip is linked to your account and how to request access or deletion in your jurisdiction.

Cabin microphones
Waymo’s stated rule is specific: “The microphones inside the car are only on during voice calls with Rider Support or when you actively choose to enable microphones inside the car.” This is narrower than an assumption that the cabin microphone continuously streams conversations. Other operators can set different rules, so check the notice for the vehicle you are booking.
Tesla’s separate practices
Tesla’s Robotaxi Privacy Notice distinguishes early-access riders from general rides and describes particular circumstances in which cabin-camera or microphone data may be transmitted. Do not apply the early-access description to all Tesla rides, or infer that a camera clip is always uploaded. The notice also separates short safety-event clips from fleet-learning recordings, which have different linkage and purposes.
What a robotaxi may store
Waymo trip and account data
Waymo lists pickup and drop-off locations, route details, device location during a trip, device and app activity, in-vehicle interface interactions and video recorded inside vehicles. These records can be connected to your account when they are needed to provide the service or investigate a problem.

Waymo says account-associated information such as trip history remains while the account is active, subject to other retention grounds. Other data may be kept when required by law or for legitimate business purposes. “While the account is active” is an account-based rule, not a promise that every sensor file survives for that entire period.

Tesla safety-event and learning recordings
Tesla describes safety-event camera recordings of up to 30 seconds. A clip can be associated with a Tesla account and may include timestamp and location metadata. The same notice describes fleet-learning camera recordings as anonymous and not account-linked. These are different data sets: an anonymous learning clip should not be treated as equivalent to an account-associated safety event.
Uber roadway recordings
Uber’s roadway-data notice covers outward-facing recordings collected for autonomous-vehicle research and development, including training and validating perception systems. It says recordings are retained as long as necessary for those purposes or as otherwise required by law. That is a purpose-based standard for roadway data, not Uber’s complete retention schedule for rider accounts, payments or trip history.
What an Uber or Lyft driver can see
Information shared with a Lyft driver
Lyft says an accepting driver receives details needed to arrange and fulfill the ride. Its listed examples include pickup and destination, location, rider name, profile photo, rating, rider statistics and additional stops. Lyft also says it does not share the rider’s actual phone number for ordinary rider-driver communication; calls or messages can be handled through the platform instead.
The driver does not automatically receive every field in your account. The disclosure is selected for the ride, and the exact display can vary by region, ride type and safety feature.

Uber app data versus roadway data
The Uber roadway notice cannot answer every question about what an Uber driver or the Uber app sees during a passenger trip because it expressly excludes ride requests and rides received through Uber’s apps and websites. For an Uber-booked autonomous ride, consult the app’s rider privacy information and the autonomous-vehicle partner’s notice rather than treating the roadway notice as a full rider policy.
Shared, paid-for and linked rides
Lyft says a person or organization that requests or pays for a ride may receive some or all ride details. Linked family or teen accounts can also involve information sharing. Consequently, the passenger in the seat may not be the only individual or entity with access to pickup, destination or status information.
Who else may receive the data?
Recipients depend on the data category and the reason for disclosure:
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches- Service providers: companies operating cloud, support, mapping, payment, safety or other functions may process information for the provider.
- Autonomous-driving partners: Uber describes sharing roadway recordings with selected autonomous-vehicle partners and service providers for research and development.
- Drivers, payers and account owners: a driver receives ride details needed to perform the trip; a requesting or paying third party may receive relevant details; linked account owners can have visibility into associated rides.
- Insurers and dispute participants: information can be disclosed in insurance, safety or dispute contexts, depending on the provider and event.
- Government or law enforcement: Waymo says requests should follow valid legal process, subject to applicable legal and safety circumstances. A possible legal disclosure is not evidence of routine disclosure on every trip.
How long do robotaxi and rideshare services keep information?
There is no industry-wide deletion deadline. Compare retention by data type rather than asking for one number.
Best Value
| Data type | Stated approach in the policies described | What the wording does not establish |
|---|---|---|
| Waymo account-associated trip history | Kept while the account is active, subject to other grounds. | It does not state that every interior-video or sensor file is kept for the same period. |
| Waymo other records | May be retained for legal requirements or legitimate business purposes. | No single fixed number of days applies to all categories. |
| Tesla safety-event clip | Up to 30 seconds per clip; may be account-associated with timestamp and location metadata. | The 30-second maximum is clip length, not a retention period. |
| Tesla fleet-learning recording | Described as anonymous and not account-linked. | Anonymous status does not tell you how long the file is stored. |
| Uber roadway recording | Kept as long as necessary for autonomous-driving purposes or as required by law. | This does not define retention for Uber rider accounts or trip history. |
Deletion requests can also be limited by legal obligations, fraud prevention, safety investigations, unresolved disputes or the rights of other people. The available controls and deadlines depend on your jurisdiction.
What controls and rights should you look for?
Privacy settings are usually data-specific. A location-permission switch can affect device location without disabling vehicle sensors. A microphone opt-in can govern cabin audio without deleting trip history. An account-deletion request can remove or de-identify some records while other records remain under a legal exception.
- Check whether cabin microphones are off by default and what action enables them.
- Review the in-ride or support interface for camera, audio and emergency-access notices.
- Use the minimum device-location permission that still allows pickup and trip tracking.
- Read the provider’s access, correction, deletion and objection procedures for your region.
- When booking an autonomous ride in a rideshare app, identify the vehicle operator and open its separate privacy notice.
- Ask support which specific recording, trip or account field is involved; a general deletion request may not cover every data stream.
What happens after an incident or support request?
An incident changes the privacy context. A support agent may need trip metadata, interior video or a safety-event clip to investigate a complaint, lost item, cleanliness issue or emergency. Waymo says support may review reported-issue video and access live video in urgent situations. Such access is event-driven and should not be presented as continuous human monitoring.

How to evaluate a robotaxi booked through a rideshare app
- Identify the operator. The app may dispatch a partner vehicle; note the name shown before or after confirmation.
- Read both notices. The rideshare policy covers the account and booking layer; the operator’s policy covers vehicle sensors and cabin practices.
- Separate sensor types. Look for exterior camera, lidar and radar collection, cabin camera, microphone, location and payment sections.
- Check activation language. Terms such as “actively enable,” “during support,” “after an incident” and “urgent situation” describe different triggers.
- Check linkage and retention. Determine whether data is tied to your account, described as anonymous, kept while the account is active or retained for a stated purpose.
- Check recipients. Look for drivers, payers, account owners, service providers, autonomous-driving partners, insurers and government requests.
- Save the current policy date. Waymo’s policy search result showed a September 17, 2026 update, and Lyft’s policy showed a July 1, 2026 update. Practices can change, so recheck before a high-sensitivity trip.
Which option exposes less information?
There is no universal winner. A conventional rideshare generally gives the assigned driver selected identity and trip details, while a robotaxi adds a vehicle-sensor layer that can observe the roadway and may collect conditional cabin data. A robotaxi can reduce driver-to-passenger interaction, but that does not eliminate platform records, account linkage or sensor collection.
For a privacy-sensitive ride, choose based on the specific policy: whether microphones require opt-in, when cabin video is accessed, whether exterior recordings are used for development, how trip history is retained and who can request the ride details. The provider’s activation and retention language matters more than the label “robotaxi” or “rideshare.”
Bottom line
Robotaxi privacy is not simply “a car with cameras” versus “a rideshare driver.” The robotaxi can generate roadway and, under defined conditions, cabin sensor data; the app maintains account and trip records; and a rideshare booking can involve both the platform and an autonomous-vehicle partner. Conventional rideshare drivers receive a limited set of ride details, while payers, linked accounts and service providers may have additional access. Compare data category, activation, purpose, account linkage, retention, recipients and controls for the exact provider and ride mode before deciding what is acceptable.
