No single test can prove that a photo or video is genuine. Reliable verification is a layered process: trace the earliest source and the surrounding claim, inspect the file’s metadata and provenance records, look for visual or audio inconsistencies, and use automated tools only as supporting evidence. A file can be an unaltered camera original yet be paired with a false date, place, or description.
Use the workflow below for routine fact-checking. If the allegation could affect safety, a legal case, employment, or someone’s reputation, preserve the original and involve a qualified digital-forensics examiner instead of relying on a consumer detector.

First separate three different questions
People often ask whether a picture or clip is “real,” but that word can refer to different issues. Answer them separately:
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →- Has the file’s pixels, frames, or soundtrack been edited? Cropping, retouching, splicing, frame removal, speed changes, and synthetic generation are all edits, while ordinary resizing or platform compression can also change the file without changing the scene.
- Is the depicted event genuine? An untouched file can show a real event, but that does not prove the event happened where or when a post claims.
- Does the caption describe it accurately? An old, genuine video may be reposted as breaking news, or a real photograph may be assigned to another country.
Verification therefore has two tracks: file-level examination and claim-level corroboration. A strong conclusion states exactly which track the evidence supports rather than declaring a clip “proven real” or “definitely fake.”

Three framing questions to ask before testing a file
A useful starting point is to ask: Is the image or video the original source? If not, identify the earliest version you can find and the person or organization that first published it. Next ask, Is it the only source? Reposts are not independent witnesses when they all came from one upload. Finally ask, Does it show what it says it shows? This requires checking the date, place, event, and caption separately from checking for pixel edits.
These questions prevent a common mistake: treating a technically genuine file as proof of a misleading claim. They also keep the investigation proportionate. A routine rumor may need source tracing and contextual checks; a disputed court exhibit may require forensic acquisition and expert testimony.
A practical six-step verification workflow
Work from the least invasive checks to the most specialized. Keep notes and copies of what you find so another person can reproduce the assessment.
- Obtain and preserve the best available file. Ask the uploader for the original file, not a screenshot, screen recording, messaging-app export, or social-media download. Save it without opening it in an editor, and record the URL, account name, publication time, stated location, and how the file was obtained. A platform copy may have removed metadata or recompressed the media, so label it as a derivative. If someone sends several versions, retain every version rather than replacing the first one.
- Trace origin and context. Search distinctive visual details, signs, landmarks, spoken phrases, and the exact wording of the claim. For an image, run reverse searches with TinEye, Bing, or Google. For a video, extract several clear frames—including opening, middle, and closing shots—and search each one; InVID is one example of a verification workflow. Search the event, weather, geography, and date independently rather than accepting the post’s caption. Try uncropped and tightly cropped searches because a logo or face may be indexed even when the full frame is not.
- Compare the earliest and later copies. Record when and where each version first appeared. Compare crops, overlays, audio, frame order, and image quality. An earlier upload with a different date or location is evidence of a context problem, even if the underlying file is genuine. Several reposts from one account or one download do not count as independent confirmation. Note whether a later version adds subtitles, blurs, a logo, a soundtrack, or a new introduction.
- Corroborate the scene. Look for genuinely independent reporting, eyewitness material, official records, or recordings from different vantage points. Check whether shadows, weather, architecture, road signs, language, and known timelines fit the claimed place and date. Independent sources that all trace back to the same original post add reach, not independent evidence. A second camera angle, contemporaneous local report, or public record is more informative than dozens of identical embeds.
- Inspect metadata and provenance. Read the file’s available EXIF or container information and check for Content Credentials. Copy the values exactly, including device, time, software, and location fields. Treat missing fields as “not available,” not as proof of manipulation. Record the filename, format, dimensions, frame rate, and any export or editing application shown by the inspection tool.
- Escalate when the stakes or anomalies justify it. Examine visual and audio continuity, then use a detector or specialist review if needed. Report the tool, version, input file, result, and known scope. Automated output is a signal with error rates, not a verdict; preserve the untouched original for any expert examination.
What metadata can—and cannot—tell you
Camera and phone files may contain capture time, GPS coordinates, device model, lens data, orientation, and editing-software tags. Those fields can help connect a file to a plausible device and timeline, or reveal that an application exported it after editing.
Metadata is not a tamper-proof diary. Social networks and messaging services commonly strip it; a user can rewrite fields before uploading; and a platform can create new dates during export. A missing GPS tag does not show that the image was manipulated, while a convincing camera model and timestamp do not prove that the scene or caption is authentic. Preserve the file before inspecting it and document which program displayed each field.
Metadata can also describe a derivative rather than the moment of capture. For example, an export date may identify when an editing application rendered a file, not when the camera recorded the scene. Treat contradictory fields as leads to investigate, not automatic proof of fraud.
Content Credentials and signed provenance
Content Credentials, based on the C2PA standard, can attach a cryptographically signed history to a file. When present, a record may identify the creator, capture time, software or device, and declared changes. Altering the signed record is detectable, which makes the credential stronger than ordinary editable metadata.

The credential answers “what history was recorded for this file,” not “was the edit appropriate?” A legitimate photographer may crop an image, and a malicious publisher may use an accurate credential on a misleading caption. Credentials can be lost when a file is copied, screenshotted, or processed by software that does not preserve them. Adoption is incomplete, so absence of a credential is inconclusive. Verify that the credential is attached to the exact file under review rather than to an earlier or different rendition.
A credential may document an AI generation or an ordinary editorial adjustment without judging the purpose of that change. Read the declared actions and the chain of software events, then compare the credentialed file with the copy that was actually posted.
Watermarks and synthetic-media checks
Some systems embed a signal intended to identify content produced by supported generative models. SynthID checks, for example, address whether an image carries a watermark associated with participating systems. A positive result can be useful evidence about that supported production path; it does not by itself establish who made the image, whether the scene is fictional, or whether the caption is true.
A negative result has a narrow meaning. The Office of Research Integrity notes that absence does not guarantee an image was not produced by another, unsupported AI system. NIST’s AI 100-4 overview also discusses research concerns that watermarks can be removed, altered, or misused. Treat watermark output as one layer alongside source tracing and file analysis. A watermark check also cannot establish that a real photograph was not later cropped, composited, or paired with false context.

Visual and audio clues: useful prompts, weak proof
Inspect the media at full resolution and, for video, frame by frame. Useful prompts for a closer look include:
- lighting or shadow directions that conflict between objects;
- reflections that do not match the scene or camera position;
- halos, abrupt edge softness, or different sharpness around a pasted subject;
- perspective, scale, or vanishing points that disagree;
- repeated textures, cloned patterns, or unnaturally uniform detail;
- hands, text, faces, jewelry, or fine structures that change shape between frames;
- audio cuts, room tone changes, lip movement that drifts from speech, or impossible background continuity.
These observations are prompts, not conclusions. JPEG compression, resizing, low light, rolling-shutter effects, camera sharpening, stabilization, and ordinary platform processing can create the same irregularities. Compare with an earlier high-quality copy and seek independent evidence before labeling an edit. A suspicious edge may be an inserted object, but it may also be a resampling boundary created when a service generated a thumbnail.
What automated forensic tools actually measure
“Manipulation detector” is not one universal capability. NIST’s Open Media Forensics Challenge (OpenMFC) treats manipulation detection, manipulation localization, deepfake detection, and steganography detection as separate evaluation tasks. A system designed to locate a pasted region is not automatically reliable at identifying a synthetic face or an altered soundtrack.

There is no general-purpose accuracy percentage for consumer image or video detectors established by the sources cited here. OpenMFC reports dataset sizes—including more than 16,000 test images in an image-manipulation dataset and about 1,000 test videos in a video-manipulation dataset—but those are evaluation counts, not accuracy claims.
When you use a detector, ask whether it was tested on both genuine and manipulated examples resembling your file, and whether false-positive and false-negative rates are documented. A result should be recorded as “this tool flagged a region under these settings,” not “the media is fake.” In its identity-proofing guidance, NIST SP 800-63A says: “Algorithmic analysis of media and automated decisioning SHOULD be augmented by manual reviews to address detection errors.” That recommendation applies to regulated remote identity-proofing systems; it is not a blanket legal rule for every investigation.
Do not compare scores from unrelated tools as though they were percentages on one scale. A confidence value may reflect a model’s internal threshold rather than the probability that a file was edited. Save the input and settings, because changing the crop, compression, or extracted video frame can change the result.
Compare the main verification methods
| Method | What it checks | What it can establish | Coverage and failure modes | Typical cost and expertise |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Reverse search and source tracing | Prior publication, copies, and surrounding context | That an image or frame appeared earlier, and whether captions, dates, or locations changed | No match is not proof of originality: the file may be new, unindexed, cropped, altered, or circulating privately | Public tools and ordinary web checking; accessible to most readers |
| File metadata | Embedded capture and export fields | Recorded device, time, location, or software information | Fields can be stripped or edited; present fields do not prove the depicted event | Low cost; basic file-inspection knowledge |
| Content Credentials | Cryptographically signed provenance and declared edits | A verifiable recorded history for the credentialed file | Credentials may never have been created, may be detached during reproduction, and do not judge whether an edit or caption is truthful | Usually free to inspect; interpretation requires provenance literacy |
| Supported-model watermark | Presence of a watermark associated with a participating generation system | A signal tied to that supported system | Does not cover unsupported systems; signals may be attacked, removed, or misused | Tool availability varies; narrow technical scope |
| Visual, audio, and forensic analysis | Pixel, frame, compression, geometry, or continuity anomalies | Evidence that a particular region or sequence merits scrutiny | Compression and camera processing cause artifacts; detectors can miss edits or flag genuine media | Manual checks are accessible; high-stakes interpretation needs trained practitioners |
How to judge independence and corroboration
Count sources by origin, not by the number of posts repeating the same file. Three articles that downloaded one account’s clip are one source. Stronger corroboration combines genuinely independent captures, different camera angles, contemporaneous local reporting, and records whose publication paths do not all lead back to the same upload.
Timing matters. A video first posted years earlier may be authentic but irrelevant to a current event. Compare the earliest timestamp with weather, daylight, construction, uniforms, vehicle models, and other time-sensitive details. A mismatch can disprove the caption without proving that anyone altered the pixels.
Independence is about collection, not merely appearance. Two outlets may use different headlines but the same wire photograph; two social accounts may have downloaded the same compressed clip. Trace links, upload times, photographer credits, and distinctive watermarks before calling sources independent.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.When to preserve evidence and call an examiner
For allegations with legal, safety, financial, employment, or serious reputational consequences, stop casual experimentation. Keep the original bit-for-bit, calculate and record a hash if you have the technical ability, and store a read-only copy. Preserve the original URL, account, download method, timestamps, messages, and every derivative separately. Do not crop, filter, convert, or repeatedly recompress the evidentiary copy.

A qualified examiner can document acquisition, recover relevant artifacts, test competing explanations, and explain uncertainty. NIST’s Digital Investigation Techniques: A NIST Scientific Foundation Review states: “Digital investigation techniques are based on established computer science methods and when used appropriately are considered reliable.” The same review warns that not all evidence may be discovered, recovered material can include extraneous items, and software changes can alter the meaning of artifacts. Those limitations are why chain of custody, repeatable methods, and expert interpretation matter.
Ask an examiner what material is needed, how it will be preserved, what the method can and cannot answer, and how findings will be reported. A specialist review is not a guarantee of certainty; it is a more controlled way to test competing explanations.

How to write a defensible conclusion
Match the wording to the strongest supported finding:
- Context finding: “The clip appeared online earlier with a different date and location.”
- Provenance finding: “This file contains a signed edit history identifying the software and declared change.”
- Corroboration finding: “Independent recordings from two locations show the same event at the claimed time.”
- Inconclusive finding: “We found no corroborating original, and the available copy lacks the information needed to resolve the question.”
- Forensic finding: “The examiner identified inconsistent frame-level evidence in the specified region,” followed by the method and limitations.
A reverse search that returns nothing, an absent credential, or a detector’s low score should remain an uncertainty statement. Do not convert any one of those outcomes into “original,” “authentic,” or “definitely fake.”
Common mistakes that produce false confidence
- Using a screenshot as though it were the camera original.
- Treating missing metadata as proof of editing.
- Assuming a signed provenance record proves the scene or caption is truthful.
- Reading a watermark check as coverage of every AI generator.
- Calling a compression artifact evidence of manipulation without comparing an earlier copy.
- Counting reposts as independent witnesses.
- Quoting a detector score without its test data, threshold, or error rates.
- Editing or recompressing the only copy before an expert can examine it.
- Failing to record the exact URL, upload time, account, and version tested.
- Confusing an edited file with a false claim: a truthful crop can still be used to mislead, and an untouched file can be assigned the wrong context.
Frequently Asked Questions
If reverse image search finds nothing, is the image original?
No. It may be new, unindexed, cropped, altered, or circulating in a closed group. A missing match is inconclusive.
Does missing EXIF metadata prove a photo was edited?
No. Platforms and messaging apps often strip metadata, and screenshots or exports may never contain it. Missing fields only mean that those fields are unavailable.
Can Content Credentials prove that a scene really happened?
No. They can verify a signed record of a file’s stated origin and edits, but they do not establish that the depicted event or caption is truthful.
Best Value
What does a positive SynthID result prove?
It can indicate a watermark associated with a supported system. It does not identify the person who made the image or prove that its description is accurate.
How many independent sources are enough?
There is no fixed number. Independence matters more than count: several reposts of one upload remain one source, while separate recordings and contemporaneous records provide stronger corroboration.
Should I trust an online deepfake detector score?
Treat it as a signal. Check what task the tool measures, whether it was tested on similar genuine and manipulated media, and whether its false-positive and false-negative rates are documented.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesWhat should I do before sending a disputed file to an expert?
Keep the highest-quality original unchanged, preserve the URL and messages, save derivatives separately, and document every inspection. Avoid cropping, filtering, converting, or recompressing the evidentiary copy.
When is professional forensic review justified?
Use a qualified examiner when the allegation could affect legal proceedings, safety, finances, employment, or serious reputation. Experts can preserve evidence and explain uncertainty more defensibly than a consumer tool.
The Bottom Line
Verify in layers: preserve the best file, trace its earliest source, test the date and location independently, compare copies, inspect metadata and signed provenance, and treat visual clues or detector results as supporting signals. No match, missing metadata, absent credential, or negative watermark result proves originality. State only what the evidence establishes, and obtain qualified forensic review when the consequences are high.
