Before authorizing payment, confirm the seller, variant, quantity, delivery address or PIN code, membership status, discounts, taxes, delivery charge, platform and handling fees, optional add-ons, and any payment surcharge. Recalculate the breakup yourself; the amount you authorize must match the displayed final total.
Why the product-page price is not the final price
An Indian e-commerce listing usually shows a starting price for one specific combination of seller, model, size, colour, quantity and delivery destination. Checkout can change when any of those variables changes. A different seller may charge a different delivery fee, a PIN code may fall outside a free-shipping zone, and a membership account may unlock an offer that is unavailable to a guest. Stock status, delivery speed, payment method and promotional eligibility can also alter the total.

The practical decision point is the last screen before you place the order. That screen should identify what you are buying and show the complete amount to be charged. Treat earlier prices as provisional until you have checked this breakup.
The verification workflow

Confirm the exact item and seller
Check the seller name, product title, model or edition, colour or size, storage capacity, pack size and quantity. Marketplace listings can place several variants under one page, and changing a variant can change both the base price and eligibility for a coupon. Read the seller or fulfilment information and note the promised delivery date.

Set the delivery destination
Enter the actual delivery PIN code or full address before judging the price. Shipping eligibility, delivery fees, cash-on-delivery availability and estimated dates can depend on the destination. If you are comparing two listings, use the same address for both.

Check membership and account status
Sign in to the account that will place the order and verify whether a membership, student benefit, loyalty tier or business account is active. A price visible to a member is not evidence that a non-member will receive the same total. Do not treat a membership saving as a discount unless it appears in the checkout calculation.

Open every price-breakup section
On the final order-review or payment page, expand collapsed panels such as “price details”, “order summary”, “offers”, “delivery”, “fees” and “payment”. Record the item subtotal, each discount, coupon, tax, delivery charge, platform or marketplace fee, handling or convenience fee, protection or service add-on, and payment-method surcharge. If a line is optional, deselect it and confirm that the total changes as expected.

Separate discounts from promises
A banner saying “up to” a percentage off is not a discount you can subtract manually. A coupon may require a minimum spend, a particular seller, a card network, an EMI transaction, a wallet, a membership or a specified payment channel. Bank and wallet offers can be instant discounts, cashback credited later, or reduced interest rather than an immediate reduction. Count an offer only after checkout shows it as applied.

Recalculate the total
Use this equation:
Item prices + mandatory charges + selected optional charges − valid discounts = final payable amount.
Include tax in the calculation exactly as displayed. If your result differs from the website’s total, do not authorize payment. Refresh the page, remove and reapply the offer, or ask support to explain the difference.

Check the payment method before authorizing
Switching from a wallet to a card, EMI, cash on delivery or another gateway can add or remove a fee. Review the amount on the payment-authorisation page as well as the order-review page. Never assume that a previously displayed total remains valid after you change the payment method.

Save evidence
Take a screenshot or download a PDF of the final breakup before paying. Keep the order ID, seller details, confirmation email or message, payment reference and, after dispatch, the invoice. Capture the date and time if the platform displays them. These records make it possible to show exactly what was offered and what you authorised.

Check the post-payment documents
After payment, compare the confirmation and invoice with the saved breakup. Verify the item quantity, tax registration details where shown, delivery charge, discounts and final amount. If the invoice differs materially from the amount you approved, contact the platform promptly and keep the conversation or ticket number.
What each line in a checkout breakup means

A fee with an unfamiliar label is not automatically unlawful, but it must be visible before you commit and you should understand whether it is compulsory. Open the platform’s fee explanation or ask support for a written description before paying.
Taxes and “inclusive” prices
Look for wording such as “inclusive of all taxes” and compare it with the separate tax line in the breakup. An inclusive statement should not be followed by an unexplained tax addition. The Press Information Bureau’s explanation of enforcement under the Consumer Protection (E-Commerce) Rules, 2020 describes showing a tax-inclusive price and then adding GST at checkout as “drip pricing”. It says Rule 7(1)(e) requires “the total price, inclusive of all charges and taxes, to be displayed upfront.”

If tax is calculated only after you enter an address or select a variant, inspect the resulting total rather than relying on the first headline price.
Platform, marketplace and handling fees
Platforms may describe a charge as a marketplace fee, platform fee, convenience fee, service fee or handling fee. The name does not tell you whether it is optional or whether tax is included. Read the line’s description and test the total with the fee removed only when the interface permits you to remove it; do not assume a fee is avoidable because it has a generic label.

Amazon India announced a ₹5 marketplace fee per order, inclusive of tax, on a 2025 company information page. That policy description lists exceptions for some digital purchases, Pay on Delivery orders, prepaid orders with certain offer-processing fees and exchange fees, and explains partial-refund treatment when an item is cancelled before shipment. This is an example of one platform’s policy, not an India-wide standard. Fees, exceptions and refund treatment can change, so rely on the policy and breakup shown for your own order.
How to handle coupons, cashback and EMI offers
Coupons
Enter the code in the checkout field and wait for an explicit confirmation that it has been applied. Check whether the minimum spend is calculated before or after other discounts and whether the coupon excludes a particular seller, category or variant. If the code disappears after you change quantity or payment method, restore the configuration that made it eligible or treat the coupon as unavailable.

Read the card type, network, minimum transaction value, maximum saving and validity period. A cashback promise may arrive later and therefore should not be subtracted from the amount charged today. When a promotion requires EMI, compare the total repayment, processing fee and interest with the non-EMI amount rather than comparing only the instant discount.
Membership pricing
Confirm that the membership is active on the account placing the order and that any delivery saving is shown in the breakup. If a trial membership is offered during checkout, check its renewal price and cancellation terms; do not accept it merely to make a provisional total look lower.
A worked calculation
The following numbers are illustrative, not a quote for any particular product:

If you do not want the protection add-on, remove it and verify that the displayed total becomes ₹3,290. If the payment page instead requests ₹3,339 after you removed the option, stop and resolve the discrepancy before authorising the transaction.

Comparing two listings fairly
Compare complete checkouts, not isolated headline prices. Use the same destination, quantity and payment method, and record the terms that affect the value of the purchase.

A lower listed price is better only when the delivered product, protections and final payable total remain better. A small saving can be outweighed by a shorter return period, a missing warranty or a much later delivery.
What to do when the amount changes
Before payment
Do not approve a payment request that is higher than the order-review total. Return to the breakup, refresh the page and check whether a coupon, stock change, delivery option or payment method caused the difference. If the mismatch persists, save screenshots and contact support through the platform’s official channel. Do not move the transaction to an unverified link or transfer money directly to a seller to “release” the order.
After payment but before dispatch
Compare the confirmation, invoice and payment record. If a mandatory charge appears in a document that was not shown before authorisation, ask the platform to explain the discrepancy and request cancellation or correction where the platform’s terms allow it. Keep the order ID, timestamps, screenshots and support correspondence.
When a seller asks for more money
A request for an extra amount after you have placed the order is a warning sign. Check whether it is a documented, pre-disclosed charge in the order terms. If it was not part of the displayed total, do not pay it merely because the seller says the order will otherwise be cancelled. Escalate through the marketplace, preserve the written request and consider the available consumer-complaint route.
Indian consumer-protection context
The Department of Consumer Affairs publishes the Consumer Protection (E-Commerce) Rules, 2020 and related amendments. The Press Information Bureau’s explanation of Rule 7(1)(e) links upfront disclosure of the total, including charges and taxes, to preventing drip pricing.
The Central Consumer Protection Authority’s orders database lists matters titled “In matter Of Amazon Seller Services Pvt. Ltd. (Inflated Price matter)” and “In matter Of Flipkart Internet Pvt. Ltd. (Inflated Price matter),” both dated 14 October 2026. The listings show that inflated-price concerns have been the subject of named enforcement matters; they do not by themselves decide what happened in any individual order.
A government amendment release dated 10 September 2026 says marketplace entities must provide key information including best-before or use-before dates, return and refund terms, warranty, delivery and payment details. It states that the amended rules commence on 1 January 2027. Recheck the applicable requirements after that date, because disclosure duties and platform policies can be updated.

Special cases that deserve an extra check
Cash on delivery
Confirm whether cash on delivery carries a fee and whether the courier accepts the required payment method. An order can show free delivery while adding a separate collection or handling charge.
Split shipments
Several sellers or warehouses may create separate shipments. Check whether delivery is charged per shipment and whether cancellation of one item changes the remaining order’s discount or fee.
Exchange orders
Read the exchange valuation, inspection conditions and any exchange fee before accepting the revised total. A discount based on the old item’s condition may be provisional until inspection.
Digital purchases
Digital goods can follow different cancellation, delivery and fee rules. Confirm whether taxes, platform fees and refund rights are shown before the final authorisation.
Large or high-value orders
For expensive purchases, save the full invoice and payment authorisation, verify the seller’s warranty and record the package condition at delivery. If the courier requests an amount that differs from the confirmed order, contact the platform before handing over payment.
Five-minute pre-payment checklist
- Seller, variant, quantity and condition match what you intend to buy.
- Delivery PIN code or address is correct.
- Membership status is the account you will use.
- Every breakup panel is expanded and understood.
- Coupons and bank offers are visibly applied, with their conditions satisfied.
- Tax, delivery, platform, handling, protection and payment charges are included in your arithmetic.
- Optional add-ons are removed unless you deliberately want them.
- The payment-authorisation amount equals the final order-review total.
- A screenshot or PDF, order ID and later invoice are saved.
If any answer is no, pause the transaction. A few minutes spent verifying the complete total is safer than trying to recover an unexplained charge after payment.
