Compare the same spot pair and time window across the venue’s trade records, its order-book spread and depth, and an independent provider with a published methodology. These checks help you judge whether activity looks plausible and whether you could execute an order, but they cannot prove who controlled the accounts behind reported trades or certify that every trade was genuine.
Why an exchange’s volume figure needs checking
Reported volume measures completed trades as a venue or data provider defines and aggregates them. A large figure by itself does not show that many independent traders were involved, nor that substantial liquidity is available when you place an order.

Wash trading is activity that creates misleading trade reports to make volume appear higher than it is. In its 2023 proposed rule, the SEC said that “there is no reliable way to determine whether trades reported are actually between two different market participants or are the result of wash trading.” That statement describes a limitation in market data; it is not a finding about a named exchange. The SEC also cautioned that blockchain wallet-transfer data is not a reliable substitute for measuring market turnover. SEC 2023 proposed rule

That is a sample-specific historical result, not a current estimate for every exchange. The SEC’s 2023 proposal also cited an upper-end estimate of up to 95% from other referenced sources; it was not the SEC’s measurement of all market volume. Neither figure establishes a current, exchange-by-exchange rate of genuine volume. NBER working paper

Compare like with like
Before comparing numbers, fix the market and measurement. BTC/USDT spot turnover is not directly comparable with BTC/USD or a futures contract. Providers may use different conversion methods, time windows, exclusions, or update schedules, so note the provider, the time you checked, and its stated method. Crypto market-data aggregation and provider differences can also create apparent discrepancies. SEC-hosted 2025 research paper
- Asset pair and quote currency: Compare the same pair, such as BTC/USDT with BTC/USDT, rather than substituting a similarly named market.
- Venue type: Keep spot and derivatives separate; a futures contract is not the same market as a spot pair.
- Time interval and timestamp: Align the interval, such as the same 24-hour window, and record when each figure was retrieved.
- Units and method: Check whether volume is reported in base or quote currency, how conversions are handled, and whether the provider aggregates or filters venue records.
A practical verification workflow
1. Inspect the venue’s trade records
Find the exchange’s documented public recent-trades feed or historical trade endpoint for the exact pair. Review a representative period, looking at timestamps, prices, and trade sizes. Compare the records with the exchange’s displayed total and consider whether the observed trades coincide with plausible price movement. A public feed shows what the exchange exposes; it does not independently audit its internal records or establish that counterparties were independent.

2. Check spread and depth for the pair
Look at the best bid and ask and the order-book size near the midprice—the midpoint between them—for the market you intend to trade. A narrower spread and more depth near that price generally indicate more executable liquidity. Ask whether the available size could accommodate your likely order without unacceptable price impact.

Depth is a snapshot of resting orders, while volume counts completed trades; neither substitutes for the other. Orders can be changed or canceled, so a thick-looking book at one moment is not a guarantee of execution at that price. 3. Cross-check an independent assessment
Compare the venue and pair with an independent provider, then read how it builds its assessment: what data it includes or excludes, what reference venues it uses, and whether the result is pair-specific or exchange-wide. CoinGecko’s May 2026 update says its exchange liquidity assessment compares volume and depth against selected reference exchanges and that Trust Score is relative to the peer population. Treat such a score as a screening signal, not an authenticity certificate; methods and scores can change. CoinGecko May 2026 methodology update

4. Investigate mismatches rather than averaging them
Pause if a venue reports high turnover but the exact pair has thin depth, a wide spread, sparse or oddly repetitive trade records, or materially different figures across providers. First recheck the pair, quote currency, spot-versus-derivatives distinction, time window, timestamp, data freshness, and provider methodology. A discrepancy is a reason to investigate, not a basis for inventing a “real volume” estimate.

Volume checks address market activity, not whether the exchange is safe or appropriate for you. Evaluate custody and withdrawal arrangements, security, fees, supported assets, customer access, and the venue’s regulatory status in your jurisdiction separately. CoinGecko’s score structure treats liquidity, cybersecurity, regulation, incidents, and proof-of-reserves disclosures as distinct components; no single score is a legal endorsement or a full compliance audit. | Check | What it can tell you | What it cannot prove |
|---|---|---|
| Displayed volume | The turnover figure reported under the venue’s or provider’s definitions. | That all trades involved independent participants or reflect genuine economic activity. |
| Public trade records | Prices, sizes, and timestamps in the records the exchange makes available. | Who controlled the accounts, whether internal records are complete, or whether trades were independent. |
| Spread and order-book depth | Snapshot evidence about quoted liquidity and potential execution conditions for a pair. | That orders will remain in place or that a future order will execute at the displayed price. |
| Independent provider assessment | A comparison based on that provider’s dataset, criteria, and reference set. | An authenticity certification, a full audit, or a guarantee that its ranking matches your trading needs. |

Surveillance descriptions from the Commodity Futures Trading Commission concern futures and options markets.
