Verify a video archive in three separate ways before streaming it: compare SHA-256 checksums for the original and uploaded files, use ffprobe to inspect the media container and streams, then test playback through the actual serving path. The first two checks do not prove that a streaming URL, server permissions, or client playback work.
What each verification step proves
| Check | What it establishes | What it does not establish |
|---|---|---|
| Source-to-destination SHA-256 comparison | The VPS file is byte-for-byte identical to the particular source file whose digest you compared. | That the source file itself is complete or playable. |
ffprobe inspection |
Whether FFmpeg can open and identify the input, and what container and streams it detects. | That your web server or streaming application is configured correctly, or that a client can play the file. |
| Playback over the real serving path | Whether the file can be reached and played through the route viewers will use. | It does not replace keeping the transfer and inspection records if you need an audit trail. |
The checks answer different questions. A matching checksum verifies a transfer against a chosen source; a probe describes recognizable media structure; an end-to-end playback test exercises the actual delivery path. For tool behavior, see the GNU Coreutils checksum documentation and the FFmpeg ffprobe documentation.

Compare source and VPS checksums
Generate a SHA-256 digest for each original file before transferring it, then generate the same digest for the corresponding file on the VPS. GNU Coreutils supports SHA-2 digests and checksum records; comparison can help detect corruption. The examples below use GNU sha256sum.
Recommended Free Tools
1. Record the source digest
On the machine holding the original, run:
sha256sum -- archive/video.mp4
Save the output with the file name and timestamp. Use the actual source path in place of archive/video.mp4.

- Get NVMe solid state performance with up to 1050MB/s read and 1000MB/s write speeds in a portable, high-capacity drive(1) (Based on internal testing; performance may be lower depending on host device & other factors. 1MB=1,000,000 bytes.)
- Up to 3-meter drop protection and IP65 water and dust resistance mean this tough drive can take a beating(3) (Previously rated for 2-meter drop protection and IP55 rating. Now qualified for the higher, stated specs.)

- Easily manage files and automatically free up space with the SanDisk Memory Zone app.(5). Non-Operating Temperature -20°C to 85°C
2. Generate the VPS digest
After upload, run the same command against the destination file on the VPS:
sha256sum -- /srv/videos/video.mp4
Compare the 64-character hexadecimal digests. The paths may differ, but the files must correspond to the same original and destination. Matching digests support byte-for-byte identity between those two files. If they differ, do not consider the upload verified: confirm the paths and file names, then re-upload or investigate the transfer before moving on.

3. Check multiple files consistently
For an archive containing many videos, keep a manifest of source paths and digests and compare each entry with the intended VPS destination. Avoid comparing a destination against the wrong source file merely because the names are similar. Treat the manifest as a record of which exact files were checked.

ffprobe, distributed with FFmpeg, reports information about multimedia inputs, including container and stream details. Its documentation describes structured output, error reporting, and version reporting; it returns a positive exit code if an input cannot be opened or recognized as multimedia.

- Always Fast: No slowdowns for large file transfers. With SLC caching (25% of current available capacity allocated as high-speed cache), this external SSD delivers steady 10Gbps for transfers within the cache capacity
1. Probe one file and check the result
On the VPS, run:
ffprobe -v error -show_format -show_streams -of json /srv/videos/video.mp4
This requests machine-readable JSON for the format and streams while limiting routine logging to errors. Review whether the output identifies the expected container and the audio and video streams you expect. If the command reports an error or exits with a nonzero status, investigate the file or the probe input path; do not assume the file is usable just because it exists.
2. Save structured output for review or automation
To retain the probe result for this file, redirect the JSON output to a record:

- Easily store and access 2TB to content on the go with the Seagate Portable Drive, a USB external hard drive
- Designed to work with Windows or Mac computers, this external hard drive makes backup a snap just drag and drop
- To get set up, connect the portable hard drive to a computer for automatic recognition no software required
- This USB drive provides plug and play simplicity with the included 18 inch USB 3.0 cable
- The available storage capacity may vary.
ffprobe -v error -show_format -show_streams -of json /srv/videos/video.mp4 > /srv/videos/video.mp4.ffprobe.json
Check that the command completed successfully and that the saved file contains the expected format and stream information. Structured output is easier to retain and process than an unrecorded terminal inspection.

Tool versions help make later checks interpretable if the VPS software changes. See the ffprobe manual and the FFmpeg documentation index.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Test playback through the actual streaming path
After checksum and probe checks pass, test the file through the same server, application, URL, and access path that will serve it. Open it using a representative client. Confirm that the URL is reachable and playback actually starts and continues as expected. A checksum does not check permissions or reachability, and ffprobe does not test your server or client. A failure here therefore needs investigation in the delivery configuration as well as the media file.
Keep an audit record
For each archive item, retain enough detail to repeat or explain the verification:

GNU Coreutils documents generating and checking digest records, while ffprobe supports structured output and version reporting. Keeping those records with the end-to-end test makes it clear which checks were actually performed.
Common failures and what to check
- Checksums differ: First confirm that you used the correct source and destination paths and paired the right files. If the pairing is correct, re-upload or diagnose the transfer; the destination has not been verified against that source.
ffprobecannot open or recognize the input: Check the path and whether the file is present and accessible to the account running the command. A positive exit code means the input could not be opened or recognized as multimedia; investigate rather than treating the file as ready.- Checksum and probe pass, but playback fails: The files may match and be inspectable while the serving path is still misconfigured. Test the actual URL and client, and check the web server or streaming application’s access and delivery configuration.
- Probe output is hard to compare or retain: Use JSON output and save it with the archive’s verification record; include the installed
ffprobeversion.
Or let it run in the cloud
For a YouTube channel that needs an uploaded video or playlist to loop as a live stream, StreamNeo is a separate cloud option: upload the video, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. It does not replace archive verification on your VPS; it is for keeping uploaded video running on YouTube without leaving a computer or home connection on.
Quick Recap
- Nothing has to stay on at home; the stream runs in the cloud.
- Uploaded video is streamed as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one price per slot.
- It automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream.
- The first day is free with no card, one free day per account.
- Monthly: $9.99 per month.
