Set OBS to one output frame rate that fits your destination and the motion you want—not to the highest frame rate among the clips in your playlist. For many general-purpose streams, 30 fps is a sensible starting point; choose 60 fps when smoother motion matters and your system can render and encode reliably at that rate. Then make a short test recording with representative clips and transitions.
Choose the output rate for the finished stream or recording
OBS’s Common FPS Value sets the cadence of the output. OBS Project says it should match the desired output FPS, giving 30 and 60 as examples (OBS overview guide). A mixed-rate playlist does not mean the finished output should have multiple simultaneous frame rates: choose one rate for the stream or recording.

Start with the destination’s requirements, if any. A streaming service, recording workflow, or downstream editor may specify a rate. If it does, use that specification where OBS offers the rate. Otherwise, weigh the motion in your content against the load on your system.

When 30 fps is a good starting point
For talking, slides, and many general-purpose streams, 30 fps is a reasonable starting point. It requires less rendering and encoding work than 60 fps, all else being equal.

When to consider 60 fps
Use 60 fps when smoother motion is important—for example, when the most demanding footage contains fast movement—and your setup can sustain it. OBS notes that 60-fps streaming can tax a system more than 30-fps streaming. If 60 fps is unstable, OBS recommends trying 30 fps in its performance guidance.
Keep integer and fractional rates distinct
Rates that look nearly equivalent are not identical: 29.97 is not 30, and 59.94 is not 60. OBS’s Windows DirectShow rate list includes fractional rates represented as 30000/1001 (about 29.97) and 60000/1001 (about 59.94) (OBS DirectShow rate list). If your source or delivery specification calls for fractional timing, select the corresponding fractional option when it is available. Options can depend on OBS version, operating system, capture driver, and destination.

For an HLS workflow targeting Apple devices, Apple’s authoring guidance says inserted media should be at a similar frame rate—x, 2x, or x/2—as other content in the same Media Playlist (Apple HLS authoring specification). That is specific to Apple-device HLS authoring, not a general rule for every OBS playlist.
What happens when playlist clips have different frame rates?
VLC Video can play a playlist in OBS, provided VLC is installed (OBS media sources guide). OBS’s output still uses the one cadence you selected. Some OBS sources, including Media Source and Video Capture Device, are described as attempting to synchronize their rate to OBS for smooth playback. That does not establish one universal frame-conversion pattern for every file in a VLC playlist: the available documentation does not specify exactly when OBS will drop or repeat frames, or how every mixed-rate file will look.

Expect the visible result to depend on the source rates and motion. When a clip’s cadence does not align evenly with the output cadence, motion can appear uneven or frames can appear repeated. Check actual playback rather than assuming that choosing an output rate will make every source look identical.
Test a representative section before going live
- Confirm the destination rate. Check the streaming service or delivery workflow’s current requirements, then set OBS’s output FPS to match where possible.
- Choose a candidate cadence. Start at 30 fps for ordinary motion, or try 60 fps when smoother movement matters and your system can handle the extra workload. Use a fractional rate instead if the source or destination specification calls for it and OBS offers it.
- Build a short test with varied material. Include the playlist’s lowest-rate and highest-rate clips, any clip from a different integer or fractional family, and transitions between items.
- Record and inspect the result. Look for judder or repeated-looking motion, check audio sync around clip changes, and confirm the output remains stable.
- Adjust if needed. If OBS struggles, try lowering FPS, simplifying the scene, or reducing output resolution. OBS specifically advises dropping from 60 to 30 fps if 60 is not working.
Keep capture-device FPS separate from output FPS
A capture device’s FPS is an input setting; it is not the same control as OBS’s output frame rate. The device may not support every rate offered in a menu, so confirm its supported options in the device properties and driver. OBS’s video settings determine the output cadence, while the capture device provides its input (OBS video capture devices guide).
