First check where the playlist is playing: a YouTube playlist embedded in an OBS browser source and a local playlist in OBS’s VLC Video source have different causes. For embedded YouTube videos, check embedding permissions, age restrictions, and privacy. For VLC playlists, check VLC installation, playlist settings, and the affected file. Then compare OBS’s preview with YouTube playback to locate where the skip begins.
Identify which playlist is skipping
“YouTube live playlist” can describe two separate setups:
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
- An embedded YouTube playlist: OBS displays a YouTube playlist, often through a browser-based source, while sending the scene to YouTube.
- A local playlist in OBS: OBS’s VLC Video source plays files from your computer while OBS sends the live stream to YouTube.
The fix depends on which path you use. If you are unsure, open the affected source’s properties in OBS and check whether it is a VLC Video source or a browser source.
Find out whether OBS or YouTube is skipping the item
- Watch the OBS preview when the playlist reaches the affected item. If it skips there, investigate the OBS source or file.
- If possible, make a local recording and check the same moment. A skip in the recording points to playback in OBS rather than YouTube’s delivery.
- If the OBS preview and recording look continuous but viewers see a skip or stall, check the YouTube Live Control Room preview and stream quality. YouTube recommends verifying that the event is accessible and monitoring audio and video quality; network congestion can also disrupt live playback. See YouTube’s live streaming tips and troubleshooting for streaming and video issues.
Keep the two observations separate: a source skipping inside OBS is not the same fault as a viewer experiencing a problem with the YouTube live stream.

If OBS is playing local files with VLC Video
OBS’s VLC Video source is designed to play multiple media items as a playlist. OBS documents that it requires VLC to be installed; 64-bit OBS requires 64-bit VLC. If VLC is missing or its architecture does not match, start by correcting that dependency. The OBS Media Sources guide also describes the source’s playlist and playback settings.
Check the playlist and playback settings
- Playlist order: Confirm the affected file is in the list and positioned where you expect.
- Shuffle Playlist: Turn shuffle off if files should play in list order. OBS documents shuffle as off by default.
- Loop Playlist: This controls whether the playlist repeats; it does not establish why an individual item is skipped. OBS documents it as on by default.
- Visibility Behaviour: Check what the source is set to do when hidden. Visibility behavior affects playback while the source is not visible in the scene.
- Network caching: OBS documents a 400 ms default for this VLC setting. That default is not evidence that caching causes a skipped file; do not change it as a presumed fix without a symptom that points to buffering.
Test a file that plays against one that does not
- Confirm the affected file is actually in the playlist and that shuffle or the list order does not explain when it plays.
- Compare the affected file’s extension with one that plays. OBS’s guide lists video formats including MP4, TS, MOV, FLV, MKV, AVI, GIF, and WebM, and audio formats including MP3, AAC, OGG, and WAV.
- Test the affected file on its own in the VLC Video source. If only that item fails, note its format and inspect the OBS log for source errors. Without the file details or log, a specific codec or file defect cannot be identified.
- Use the OBS preview and, if available, a local recording to establish whether the source itself skips it before investigating YouTube playback.
If OBS is displaying an embedded YouTube playlist
Check the affected video’s availability and embedding permissions. YouTube Help identifies three relevant reasons a video may not appear in an embedded playlist: the uploader disabled embedding, the video is age-restricted, or a private video has not been shared with the viewer. YouTube advises using public videos with embedding enabled in embedded playlists. See YouTube’s guidance on videos missing from embedded playlists and how to share playlists.

- From Sandisk, a brand professional photographers trust to take on assignments.
- Open the affected video’s YouTube watch page and check whether it is available to the account or audience viewing the embedded playlist.
- If it is private, confirm that the intended viewer has been given access. If the playlist must be broadly viewable, use a public video instead.
- Ask the uploader to enable embedding if it is disabled. A video that cannot be embedded may not play in the OBS source even when it appears in the playlist elsewhere.
- Check whether the video is age-restricted. If it is, do not assume it will display in an embedded playlist.
When the symptom is an audio cut or delay
An audio edge cut or monitoring delay is not necessarily the same as a playlist item being skipped. An OBS issue report opened on July 31, 2023 described roughly one second missing at the start and end of MP3 files in a VLC playlist; it is an individual report, not proof of a general OBS fault. A separate report about VLC Media Source lag concerned delayed audio monitoring. The issue page says a project member confirmed the delay was limited to monitoring and that recordings captured playback correctly; it was closed as completed on July 23, 2023. Those reports describe specific symptoms and do not diagnose another setup without its OBS version, operating system, file details, source type, and logs: MP3 playlist report and VLC Media Source lag report.

Common symptoms and the next check
| What you see | What to check next |
|---|---|
| The item is absent in an embedded YouTube playlist | Check embed permission, age restriction, and whether a private video is shared with the viewer. |
| A local item is skipped in OBS’s preview | Check VLC installation and bitness, playlist order and shuffle, visibility behavior, then test the file and inspect the OBS log. |
| OBS looks continuous, but YouTube playback stalls or skips | Compare the Live Control Room preview and stream quality; check event accessibility and network conditions. |
| Only the beginning or end of audio is cut | Treat it as an audio-boundary symptom, not automatically as a skipped-file cause; compare the file and inspect source or log details. |
| Audio monitoring is delayed but a recording is in sync | Distinguish monitoring from captured playback before changing the playlist or file. |
