Use FFmpeg’s logs to confirm that your encoder opened the input, mapped the intended audio and video, initialized an RTMP or RTMPS output, and is continuing to send data. Then check YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room for the incoming preview and Stream health or Stream status. FFmpeg reports what is happening locally; a healthy progress line by itself does not prove that YouTube is receiving or accepting the stream.
What FFmpeg logs can—and cannot—tell you
FFmpeg logs show whether the local process can read your source, prepare the selected streams, open an output connection, and continue writing output. They are useful for diagnosing encoder and transport problems.

YouTube’s Live Control Room is the platform-side check: look for the incoming preview and read the separate Stream health or Stream status indicator. YouTube says this status view can show specific errors and instructions. A preview is evidence that YouTube has a feed available, but check its health status and verify the intended watch page before an event.

There is no reliable, universal translation from every FFmpeg error line to a YouTube health state. Interpret the complete log alongside what Live Control Room reports, rather than treating a single line as proof of server-side acceptance.

Confirm the YouTube destination and stream key
In YouTube Studio, open the Live Control Room and confirm that FFmpeg is configured with the stream URL and key for the intended stream. The key lets the encoder send the feed for YouTube to accept. Treat it like a password: redact it from logs, terminal captures, and screenshots before sharing them.

Keep the complete FFmpeg output
FFmpeg’s documented default log level is
info. Preserve the relevant startup output, ongoing progress, and final error or shutdown lines. A cropped progress line can omit the input, stream mapping, output initialization, or the actual failure. FFmpeg documents log-level controls and report-file options in its documentation.Rank #2

Verify local input, mapping, and output
Read the startup log to confirm that FFmpeg identified the intended input and mapped the expected video and audio streams. Check that the RTMP or RTMPS output initialized, then observe whether output progress continues or write/network errors appear. FFmpeg’s protocol documentation describes RTMP as a protocol for streaming multimedia over TCP/IP; an initialized output and advancing progress indicate a local transmission attempt, not complete confirmation of YouTube’s side.

Check the incoming feed and status in YouTube Studio
In Live Control Room, wait for the incoming preview and inspect Stream health or Stream status. Follow the specific error or instruction shown there. Verify the intended watch page and check audio and video as appropriate before the event. YouTube’s encoder workflow covers connecting an encoder and checking the preview.

Compare your output settings with YouTube’s guidance
Check protocol, codec, resolution, frame rate, bitrate, keyframe interval, and audio codec against YouTube’s current live encoder recommendations. Settings depend on the selected codec and video format; do not use one bitrate as a universal target.
Read the two sets of evidence together

Settings to verify before blaming ingest
Use YouTube’s current recommendations for the exact codec, resolution, and frame rate you selected. For H.264, YouTube’s encoder settings table gives these recommended bitrates:

These are YouTube Help recommendations for H.264 ingestion, not measured performance results or universal settings. YouTube also supports H.265 and AV1 options, permits up to 60 fps, and recommends RTMPS, the secure extension to RTMP. Its guidance recommends constant bitrate (CBR), a two-second keyframe interval (not over four seconds), AAC or MP3 audio, and testing with representative audio and video before going live. Consult the current encoder table for the format and codec you actually use; recommendations can change.

Common problems and what to check
- No input or unexpected stream mapping: Confirm the input path and that the source contains the audio/video streams you expect. Check FFmpeg’s input identification and mapping at startup.
- Output does not initialize: Recheck the selected stream URL and key in YouTube Studio, and confirm FFmpeg is targeting that stream. Keep the full error and surrounding log lines; a generic initialization message does not establish the cause.
- Output initializes, but progress stops or write errors appear: Investigate the complete local log and network/output error. Then compare it with YouTube’s status message; continuing progress alone does not establish healthy platform-side ingest.
- FFmpeg appears to send, but YouTube has no preview: Confirm the encoder is still running and the configured URL/key match the selected stream. Check Live Control Room for the platform’s own status or error guidance.
- Preview appears with a warning or poor health status: Use the specific message shown in Live Control Room, then verify that the actual codec, resolution, frame rate, bitrate, keyframe interval, and audio codec fit YouTube’s current recommendations.
- Logs or screenshots expose the stream key: Remove or redact the key before sharing. Treat it as a credential, not diagnostic text.
