Use PowerShell’s Get-FileHash to calculate the ISO’s SHA256 hash, then compare the complete result with the matching product-and-language entry on Microsoft’s Windows 11 download page. A match meets Microsoft’s stated integrity check; a different hash does not.
Get the reference hash for your exact Windows 11 ISO
Open Microsoft’s Windows 11 download page and find its “Verify your download” section. Use the SHA256 value listed for the product and language you actually downloaded. The reference is tied to the specific ISO, so a value for another release, product, language, or architecture is not a valid comparison.

Microsoft’s consumer page provides a live table rather than one checksum that applies to every Windows 11 ISO. Check the current entry for your download instead of relying on a checksum copied from an unrelated page or an older release.
Calculate the ISO’s SHA256 hash in PowerShell
- In File Explorer, locate the ISO. Copy its full path, or note its folder and file name.
- Open Windows PowerShell and run the command below, replacing the example path with the ISO’s actual path:
Get-FileHash "C:UsersYourNameDownloadsWindows11.iso" -Algorithm SHA256 - Read the value beside
Hashin the output. Compare every character with the SHA256 reference for the same product and language.
Get-FileHash uses SHA256 by default, so the algorithm option is not strictly necessary. Including -Algorithm SHA256 makes the requested algorithm explicit.

What the result means
If the hashes match
Microsoft says a matching SHA256 output confirms the file has not been corrupted, tampered with, or altered from the original. This confirms the downloaded file matches Microsoft’s reference; it does not check whether your PC can run Windows 11, whether you have an activation license, or whether installing Windows is safe for your files.
If the hashes differ
That ISO has not passed Microsoft’s stated match test. Download it again from Microsoft’s official page, then calculate and compare the new file’s hash. Do not continue as if the mismatched file were verified. Microsoft’s instructions specify the comparison but do not provide a detailed diagnosis for every cause of a mismatch.

What to check before installing
Hash verification is only a file check. Microsoft’s Windows installation-media guidance treats hardware eligibility and installation choices as separate considerations. You can mount an ISO or use it to create installation media on a USB flash drive or DVD.

If you choose bootable media for a clean installation, Microsoft warns that this process wipes the hard drive and existing Windows installation, removing files and installed apps. Back up files you need first, and check that the device meets Windows 11 requirements; a matching ISO hash does not establish either point.
