Transfer your data while setting up the Pixel 10a: choose your old Android phone or iPhone when prompted, then follow the on-screen copy steps. Google supports wireless and cable-assisted transfers on Pixel 10 and later. Contacts, photos, videos, and compatible apps can move, but app data and iCloud-only photos need extra attention.
Before you start
- Charge both phones, keep them near each other, and connect them to strong Wi-Fi. Back up the old phone first and have its screen lock code ready. [Google’s preparation guidance]
- A USB-C data cable is optional. It can help if Wi-Fi is weak or you prefer a wired transfer; check that the cable fits both phones and supports data. [Google’s cable guidance]
- If you use WhatsApp or another app with its own chat history, back up that history in the app and follow its migration steps. Device copy does not replace every app’s own transfer process. [Google’s preparation guidance]
Transfer from an Android phone
- On the old Android phone, update Google Messages and make it the default messaging app if you use it. [Google’s Android transfer guide]
- Turn on the Pixel 10a and begin setup. When asked what device you are copying from, choose the Pixel or Android option.
- Follow the pairing instructions shown on the Pixel. Depending on the flow, you may receive a setup notification on the old phone or be asked to scan a QR code.
- Enter the old phone’s screen lock code when prompted, choose the data categories to copy, and follow the instructions on both phones until the transfer finishes. [Google’s Android transfer guide]
Google lists contacts, photos and videos, and apps downloaded or purchased through Google Play among the data that can copy from Android. Data in apps made for a particular phone manufacturer may not transfer. [Google’s Android transfer guide]

Transfer from an iPhone
- Back up the iPhone, charge both devices, turn on Wi-Fi and Bluetooth, update iOS, and have the iPhone passcode ready. [Google’s preparation guidance] [Google’s iPhone transfer guide]
- On the iPhone, turn off iMessage and FaceTime before switching. This helps avoid missing messages after you move to Android. [Google’s iMessage and FaceTime guidance]
- During Pixel 10a setup, select iPhone as the source and follow the pairing and copy instructions on screen. Google supports wireless, wired, or combined transfer on Pixel 10 and later; the available choice depends on the connection and devices. [Google’s iPhone transfer guide]
Important: iCloud photos may not be on the iPhone
Device copy transfers photos saved locally on the iPhone, not photos stored only in iCloud. For those, Google points users to syncing with Google Photos or using Apple’s iCloud migration tool. [Google’s photo and messaging guidance]

Wireless or cable: which should you use?
| Method | Good choice when | What to know |
|---|---|---|
| Wireless | You have reliable Wi-Fi and want to avoid connecting a cable. | Keep both phones close and follow the Pixel’s pairing prompts. Google supports wireless transfer for Pixel 10 and later. [Google’s iPhone transfer guide] |
| Wired | Wi-Fi is weak or you prefer a direct connection. | A USB-C-to-USB-C cable may work with Android phones and newer iPhones. iPhone X or older may require a Lightning-to-USB-C cable or the relevant Quick Switch Adapter setup. An adapter is not necessary for every transfer. [Google’s cable guidance] [Google’s adapter guidance] |
What transfers—and what may need attention
- Contacts: Contacts included in the selected device transfer can copy. Contacts already saved to your Google Account will appear when you sign in to that account on the Pixel. [Google’s transfer guide] [Google’s backup and restore guidance]
- Photos and videos: Android transfer can include photos and videos. From an iPhone, only photos stored locally are included in device copy; handle iCloud-only images separately. [Google’s Android transfer guide] [Google’s iPhone transfer guidance]
- Apps and app data: Google Play apps may be copied from Android, but that does not guarantee every app’s private data, login, or content will move. From iPhone, do not expect the iOS app itself to become an Android app; install compatible Android versions from Google Play and sign in as needed. Check important apps individually. Available categories can vary by source phone, operating-system version, app, and transfer method. If the Pixel runs out of storage, Google says the copy can pause; free space and continue as prompted. [Google’s Android transfer guide] [Google’s iPhone transfer guide]

If you skipped setup or no longer have the old phone
Setup is already complete
Pixel 9 and later support adding data after setup with Android Switch. On the Pixel, open Settings, find Android Switch, and follow the prompts to transfer from a device or choose an available cloud backup. Pixel 10a is covered by this Pixel 9-and-later guidance. If a transfer was interrupted, Google says it can be completed later with Android Switch. [Google’s Pixel transfer guide] [Google’s after-setup guidance]
The old phone is unavailable
During setup, connect the Pixel to a network, sign in to the Google Account that holds the old phone’s backup, and follow the restore prompts. You can restore only items present in an available backup; contacts already associated with that Google Account appear after sign-in. [Google’s backup and restore guidance]
