Preserve the alert, examine its sensor and timing, assess the pixel and confidence in context, seek corroboration through locally authorized channels, and record the decision under your jurisdiction’s procedure. NASA LANCE FIRMS warns: “Do not use for the preservation of life or property.” Its satellite-derived detections can inform fire management, but have limited accuracy.
What does a satellite fire detection mean on the ground?
It means a satellite instrument detected a thermal anomaly at an approximate location and observation time. NASA FIRMS notes that such anomalies can come from fire, hot smoke, agriculture, or other sources. The detection alone does not establish that an unwanted wildfire exists.

The map symbol represents an approximate sensor pixel, not a fire boundary. A small, intense fire may trigger a detection, as may activity spread across a wider part of the pixel; the symbol does not mean every point inside it is burning. Treat the coordinates as an area to assess, not a precise incident location. NASA LANCE FIRMS map

- Preserve the alert as received. Record the provider and product, sensor, time the alert arrived, underlying observation time if available, coordinates, confidence value or category, and the original alert or map view. Keep receipt time separate from observation time: NASA FIRMS distributes near-real-time data, but delivery and observation are different events.
- Interpret the pixel footprint. NASA FIRMS gives approximate plotted dimensions of 1 km × 1 km for MODIS and 375 m × 375 m for VIIRS. Those figures describe displayed pixel footprints, not fire size. Use the detection as an area requiring assessment rather than a boundary or exact location. NASA LANCE FIRMS map
- Review confidence without treating it as confirmation. Identify the instrument and algorithm, then interpret the confidence field in context. NASA explains that the MODIS confidence value is derived from intermediate quantities used by the detection algorithm; it is not a ground-truth probability that the source is a wildfire. NOAA lists possible daytime VIIRS false alarms including reflected solar radiation from solar panels, hot and bright surfaces, and cloud glint. NASA FIRMS Fire Alert Notes · NOAA TOWR-S VIIRS Active Fires
- Check neighboring detections and available imagery. Look for temporal persistence and spatial patterns consistent with fire, and review other trusted operational information. NASA describes the Suomi-NPP VIIRS fire product suite as mapping global fire activity at intervals of up to approximately 12 hours; this is a product description, not a guarantee for every sensor, feed, or alert service. Satellite revisit timing limits what persistence or absence can show. NASA VIIRS Land Products
- Seek authorized ground or agency corroboration. Use the jurisdiction’s dispatch, incident-reporting, or field-contact procedures to establish whether an incident has been independently reported or observed. Evaluate the source, time, location, and reliability of that information. Record a satellite observation separately from a ground report.
- Document uncertainty and disposition. Log the sources and times checked, what supported or conflicted with the alert, and the action taken under local policy. If confirmation is lacking, describe the detection as unconfirmed rather than as a wildfire.
How accurate is a NASA FIRMS fire alert?
There is no single accuracy percentage established here that can be applied to every FIRMS alert. Accuracy depends on the sensor, detection algorithm, viewing geometry, conditions, and what is being inferred. A confidence attribute can help interpret or rank detections, but it does not prove the cause or confirm an incident. NASA FIRMS cautions that its detections have limited accuracy and displays the warning “Do not use for the preservation of life or property.” Use the feed as information for assessment, not as a substitute for authorized operational confirmation. What are the differences between MODIS and VIIRS detections?
| Consideration | MODIS | VIIRS |
|---|---|---|
| Approximate plotted pixel footprint | 1 km × 1 km, according to NASA FIRMS; this is not the fire’s size. | 375 m × 375 m, according to NASA FIRMS; this is not the fire’s size. |
| Response to smaller fires | Coarser footprint than the 375 m VIIRS product. | NASA says the 375 m VIIRS product has greater response to smaller fires than coarser approximately 1 km fire products; added detail does not verify an incident or perimeter. |
| Observation timing | Not stated here as a universal interval; check the specific feed and observation timestamp. | NASA describes up to approximately 12-hour mapping intervals for the Suomi-NPP VIIRS fire product suite. Do not generalize this cadence to all VIIRS feeds or alert services. |
| Key limit | A thermal-anomaly detection can have non-fire causes, may not locate the incident precisely, and is not dispatch authorization. | |

Can satellites miss a wildfire?
Yes. A fire may begin and end between satellite overpasses, or be obscured by cloud, heavy smoke, or tree canopy. An absent detection therefore does not establish that no fire exists. Likewise, a delay between observation and alert delivery means a near-real-time feed is not necessarily instantaneous.

Does a hotspot square show the fire perimeter?
No. It marks an approximate sensor pixel associated with a detected thermal anomaly. It neither outlines a fire nor confirms that the whole pixel is burning. Use the mapped location to guide assessment and rely on the appropriate operational sources and procedures for incident location and extent.

Should dispatch send units based on a satellite alert?
The reviewed NASA and NOAA product materials do not establish a universal dispatch threshold or say that a satellite detection authorizes a response. Follow the responsible jurisdiction’s established dispatch procedure and use its authorized channels to seek corroboration. Do not invent a minimum number of confirming sources: evaluate the reliability, time, and location of available information under local policy.
