To choose a 5G phone for dependable reception, first check coverage where you live, work, and travel; then confirm that the exact phone model and variant supports your carrier and its requirements. No coverage map can promise service inside a particular building, and the available evidence does not establish one phone as a reception winner.
Start with the places you actually use your phone
Check the carrier you plan to use at your home, workplace, regular routes, and other important destinations. The FCC’s Broadband Data Collection maps use provider-submitted propagation models, rather than measurements taken inside each home or workplace. The FCC specifies separate 5G-NR modeled coverage conditions, including 7/1 Mbps and 35/3 Mbps, and maps for outdoor stationary and in-vehicle mobile environments. Those parameters describe how coverage is modeled; they are not promised speeds or a phone-quality rating.

Use carrier maps as a first screen, not a guarantee. T-Mobile describes its map as approximate anticipated outdoor coverage and says it does not guarantee service; Verizon similarly labels its map approximate outdoor coverage and not a service guarantee. Check their current maps for your locations: T-Mobile coverage map and Verizon coverage map.

Verify the exact phone model and carrier requirements
Do not rely on a phone’s brand name or a generic “5G” label. Check the full model number and regional variant against the carrier’s supported-device information, and verify its listed radio bands. Specifications can differ between variants sold under the same product name.
For example, an AT&T device specification page lists 5G bands n2, n5, n14, n30, n66, and n77 for the model shown, and identifies n77 C-Band and n77 3.45 GHz for 5G+. That is an example of model-level checking, not a universal band checklist for every carrier or phone: AT&T device specifications.

A compatible handset alone may not be enough to access 5G. AT&T says its 5G service requires a compatible device and plan, and that coverage is not available everywhere. T-Mobile also says access requires a capable device and qualifying service. Confirm the requirements for the carrier and plan you intend to use: AT&T 5G and T-Mobile coverage information.

Outdoor coverage on a map does not establish how well a phone will work inside a home, office, basement, or other specific space. Building materials, the precise location, and the phone’s antenna can affect reception. Ofcom, the UK communications regulator, cautions that checker results may not match reception on the ground and notes phone antenna quality as one factor; its guidance explains general map limitations, not U.S. coverage: Ofcom mobile coverage checker.

Also avoid treating a 5G icon as a complete reception test. T-Mobile says its devices can use different signal types and dynamically route traffic, so the indicator alone does not show how reliably the phone will serve your particular use or location.

A practical comparison checklist
- Choose the intended carrier. Confirm the network and plan you expect to use, including any device or service eligibility requirements.
- Check real locations. Search the carrier map for home, work, frequent routes, and important destinations. Treat the result as an estimate, especially for indoor use.
- Compare exact variants. For each phone, confirm the full model or variant, its listed 5G bands, and carrier compatibility using manufacturer and carrier specifications.
- Set expectations for difficult locations. If service is critical in a particular room or building, map coverage alone cannot confirm it will work there. The available sources do not establish a particular phone as a fix for difficult local reception.
