How to Back Up an iPhone Before Erasing It

Make and verify an iCloud or computer backup, check separately synced data, and restore it during iPhone setup after erasing.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Before erasing your iPhone, make a fresh backup to iCloud or a Mac or Windows computer, then confirm it completed. Check separately that important data you expect to keep is syncing to iCloud. If you use a computer backup and need Health data or saved passwords, enable local backup encryption and keep its password. Erase only after those checks; restore from the backup you verified during setup.

Choose where to back up your iPhone

Apple supports backing up an iPhone to iCloud or a computer. You can make both types for an additional recovery route, but each backup must finish and be checked independently.

Method Where the backup is stored What you need Important consideration
iCloud Your iCloud account Wi-Fi, sufficient iCloud storage, and your Apple Account Data already syncing to iCloud is not duplicated in the device backup. See Apple’s iCloud backup contents.
Computer A Mac or Windows PC Computer storage, a compatible connection, and Finder, Apple Devices, or iTunes, depending on your setup Computer backups are unencrypted by default. An encrypted backup requires its password to restore.

Make an iCloud backup

  1. Connect the iPhone to Wi-Fi.
  2. Open Settings, tap your name, then tap iCloud > iCloud Backup.
  3. Tap Back Up Now and stay connected to Wi-Fi until the backup finishes.
  4. On the iCloud Backup screen, check the displayed date and time under the last backup. Do not proceed unless it reflects the backup you just made.

If iCloud storage is insufficient, follow the options shown on the device; the available choices can depend on your account. A backup that cannot complete is not a usable safety copy.

Make a computer backup

  1. Connect the iPhone to the computer with a compatible data cable and open the appropriate app. On a Mac with macOS 10.15 or later, use Finder. On a Windows PC, Apple’s backup instructions describe iTunes; Apple Devices is also documented in Apple’s Windows guide. Older macOS versions use iTunes.
  2. Select the iPhone in Finder, Apple Devices, or iTunes. In Finder, open General.
  3. Choose Back up all of the data on your iPhone to this Mac where that option is shown, then click Back Up Now.
  4. Wait for the operation to complete and check the app’s backup information before erasing. Menu names and app availability can vary by operating system and setup.

Decide whether to encrypt a computer backup

Computer backups are unencrypted by default. If you want a local backup to include categories such as saved passwords, Wi-Fi settings, website history, Health data, and call history, turn on Encrypt local backup in Finder, Apple Devices, or iTunes and set a password. Apple says Face ID, Touch ID, and device passcode data are not included.

Check syncing separately from the backup

An iCloud device backup contains information and settings that are not already syncing to iCloud. Some items therefore live in iCloud through their own sync services rather than being copied into the device backup:

  • If iCloud Photos is enabled, photos sync to iCloud instead of being included in the daily device backup.
  • If Messages in iCloud is enabled, messages sync separately.
  • Some app data stored in iCloud Drive is stored there rather than in the device backup.

Check the sync status of important services, particularly if you recently changed or added data. A recent backup timestamp confirms when the backup ran; it does not by itself establish that every expected item was included in that backup rather than synced separately.

Erase the iPhone after verifying the backup

  1. On the iPhone, open Settings > General > Transfer or Reset iPhone > Erase All Content and Settings.
  2. Enter the device passcode or Apple Account password if prompted, then follow the on-screen steps.
  3. If the iPhone has an eSIM, choose whether to keep or erase it. An erased eSIM may need carrier reactivation.

Apple’s instructions for erasing an iPhone describe this flow. Do not start it until you have verified the backup you intend to use and checked separately synced data.

Restore from the backup during setup

After erasing, follow setup on the iPhone and choose the option to restore from an iCloud backup or from a computer. When choosing among backups, check the date and size so you select the copy you verified rather than an older one.

For a computer restore, connect the iPhone to the Mac or PC and use Finder, Apple Devices, or iTunes according to the computer setup. Enter the encryption password if the selected local backup is encrypted. Apple’s guides cover restoring from an iCloud backup and restoring from a computer backup.

If you already completed iPhone setup as a new device, Apple’s documented restore process requires erasing it again to return to the setup flow and select a backup.
