Why 5G Speeds Drop Near Airports and Other Radio Sites

A slow 5G connection near an airport does not, by itself, mean aviation-safety rules are throttling your phone. The U.S. airport issue concerned possible interference between 5G C-band transmissions and aircraft radio altimeters—not a general requirement to slow nearby consumer service. Everyday factors such as network demand, signal conditions, your device, and your plan can affect speed.

What the airport 5G concern was—and was not

In the United States, the aviation concern involved 5G C-band service in the 3.7–3.98 GHz range, which the FAA describes as close to the frequencies used by aircraft radio altimeters. Altimeter readings inform other aircraft safety systems, so regulators and aviation operators focused on reducing potential effects during low-visibility landings. FAA: 5G and Aviation Safety

In 2022, wireless companies agreed to turn off transmitters or make other adjustments near selected airports while mitigations were developed. The FAA says voluntary carrier measures and aircraft equipment upgrades later minimized the impacts to levels acceptable to both industries. It reports that the entire U.S. airline fleet had upgraded its equipment by the end of September 2023, mitigating the risk of 5G interference. That is an aviation-safety update, not evidence that any particular airport’s consumer network is slow or that a local phone connection is being restricted. FAA: 5G and Aviation Safety

Why 5G can slow down near an airport or radio site

A cell site serves a shared area; being close to one does not guarantee that you will get high throughput. T-Mobile’s published disclosure lists several factors that can influence the speed a customer experiences. They are possible contributors, not a diagnosis of what is happening at a particular airport or on a particular phone. T-Mobile: Internet Services

  • Network demand and capacity: Other users share network resources, and site capacity can affect the speeds available at a given time.
  • Location and surroundings: Distance, terrain, and interference can change radio conditions.
  • Where and how you use the phone: Indoor use, being inside a vehicle, and moving through the area can affect the connection.
  • Device and plan: Device activity and plan-related prioritization conditions can also matter.

A speed test shows the performance of your connection at that moment; it does not identify which factor caused a slowdown. A nearby tower, strong-looking signal indicator, or airport location alone cannot establish the cause.

What FCC coverage maps tell you

The FCC’s National Broadband Map displays coverage areas reported by providers, based on required modeling—not a live reading of your phone’s connection. For 5G-NR, the FCC’s 2025 guidance describes modeled minimum-speed cases of 7 Mbps down and 1 Mbps up, and 35 Mbps down and 3 Mbps up. These are map-model parameters, not typical airport speeds, promises of service, or measurements of an individual connection. FCC: Formatting Mobile Broadband Availability Coverage Maps

The same guidance includes assumptions such as at least 90% cell-edge probability and at least 50% cell loading. Those figures describe modeling requirements; they are not statistics about the share of users who get a certain speed. The FCC map also does not show indoor coverage. A mapped outdoor or in-vehicle service area therefore cannot guarantee a usable indoor signal at a terminal, parking structure, or other building. How to troubleshoot a slow connection

  1. Check coverage for the exact location. Review your carrier’s map and confirm your phone and plan support the service shown. Treat the FCC map as outdoor or in-vehicle modeled availability, not an indoor guarantee.
  2. Repeat tests in the same place at different times. Record whether you are indoors, in a vehicle, moving, or stationary. A change over time may be consistent with changing demand, but it does not prove that congestion is the cause.
  3. Compare conditions one at a time. If practical, test a nearby location, another device, or another carrier. These comparisons can help narrow down whether the result is specific to a place, device, or service, but cannot establish a tower’s configuration.
  4. Challenge a map mismatch outdoors or in a vehicle. The FCC says its Mobile Speed Test app can be used to submit challenge tests when reported availability does not match experience. Challenge tests cannot be taken indoors, so an indoor result is not a valid coverage challenge. FCC: How to Use the New FCC Mobile Speed Test App to Challenge Mobile Coverage

What the FAA’s 2026 announcement means

On July 22, 2026, the FAA announced that it would issue a final rule on next-generation aircraft radio-altimeter performance alongside an FCC order adopted for new 5G spectrum auctions. The FAA described safeguards for the new band, including power limits, a buffer band to protect the altimeter band, and limits on tower height. The statement is about aircraft resilience and spectrum coexistence; it does not explain a particular consumer’s slow download or establish that airport phone service is being reduced.
