A successful transaction on a Layer 2 explorer confirms that your withdrawal request was included on that L2; it does not necessarily mean the funds have arrived on the destination chain. Start with the initiating L2 transaction hash, follow the bridge’s message status, and verify any required destination-chain proof, finalization, or claim transaction and resulting transfer.
What you need before checking
Gather the initiating transaction hash and confirm the exact source network, intended destination network, token, amount, and recipient address. Do not infer the destination from a token symbol: similarly named assets and bridges can follow different routes.
A Layer 2 withdrawal may involve multiple linked transactions or message stages rather than one transaction. For example, the OP Stack specification describes withdrawals as cross-domain transactions initiated on L2 and finalized by a transaction on L1: OP Stack withdrawal specification.
How to trace a withdrawal from L2 to its destination
- Check the initiating transaction on the source L2. Open the explorer for the network where you initiated the withdrawal and search the L2 transaction hash. Confirm that it is the expected transaction and inspect its receipt or result, sender, bridge target or contract, token or value, and timestamp. A successful receipt establishes inclusion on that L2, not completion across the bridge. Explorer transaction and receipt status are distinct from bridge message progress; see the Ethereum JSON-RPC documentation.
- Look up the withdrawal in the bridge’s status tool. Use the official bridge transaction history or message-status tool, when available, and search with the initiating hash. For an Arbitrum L2-to-L1 message, Arbitrum’s official FAQ specifies using the L2 transaction hash; its bridge history can also show messages and allow users to claim withdrawals: Arbitrum withdrawal FAQ.
- Identify the required destination-chain steps. Depending on the network, the withdrawal may need a proof, a claim, or a finalization transaction on L1. Use the bridge history and that network’s official instructions to determine which step remains; do not assume a successful source transaction has automatically executed the destination transaction.
- Verify the destination transaction and outcome. Search the intended destination explorer for the associated proof or finalization/claim transaction. Inspect its receipt and resulting transfer or event. Confirm that the recipient and asset match your original request. The relevant L1 transaction and destination-side result—not merely the source receipt—are the evidence that the withdrawal completed.
How withdrawal stages differ by network
| Network or flow | Starting lookup | Stages to follow | Timing and completion check |
|---|---|---|---|
| OP Stack networks | Initiating L2 withdrawal transaction | L2 initiation, L1 proving transaction, then L1 finalization transaction | The OP Stack specification describes a seven-day challenge period after proving before finalization is eligible. Treat this as protocol documentation, not a universal promise for every network or bridge. Verify the L1 finalization transaction and destination outcome. OP Stack withdrawal specification |
| Arbitrum L2-to-L1 | Initiating L2 transaction hash | Track the cross-chain message in the official bridge transaction history; claim the withdrawal when the bridge indicates it is available. | Use the bridge history to follow message status and claim availability, then verify the destination-side result. The cited FAQ does not establish a single universal completion time. Arbitrum withdrawal FAQ |
| ZKsync | L2 withdrawal request | The L2 request must be executed; the user then finalizes on L1 with a withdrawal proof. | Execution delay and finalization timing depend on network activity and proof generation. Check the L1 finalization and resulting transfer. ZKsync withdrawal documentation |
Bridge interfaces and status labels can change. Follow the current official instructions for the specific network and transaction rather than applying one network’s timing or labels to another.

What common status labels mean
Labels such as “included,” “proven,” “ready to finalize,” and “finalized” refer to different stages in some bridge flows. They are not interchangeable, and their precise meaning depends on the network. Check the chain’s official documentation or bridge status page for the label shown on your withdrawal.
A block explorer typically shows transactions and receipts for its own chain. A bridge history or message tracker is often needed to follow the cross-chain state between chains. That is why the L2 transaction can be successful even while no matching transfer is yet visible on the destination explorer.

Why the withdrawal may not appear on Etherscan
- The withdrawal is still progressing. The source transaction may be included while the bridge is waiting for a network-specific execution, proof, challenge, or finalization step.
- The source transaction reverted. Check the L2 receipt before looking for a successful destination transfer; a reverted request may not produce the expected withdrawal.
- You are checking the wrong destination or address. Confirm the destination network and recipient from the original request, then search the correct explorer and address.
- The destination-side transaction has not been submitted or claimed. Some flows require a separate L1 action. Check the bridge history for a ready-to-finalize or claim step and follow the network’s official process.
ZKsync’s documentation specifically identifies confirmation delay, reverted transactions, and a wrong destination address as possible reasons a withdrawal may not appear on Etherscan: ZKsync withdrawal documentation.
