Which one should you buy?
Choose Apple TV 4K for Apple integration and Wi-Fi 6
Apple TV 4K is the more natural fit if your household already uses Apple services and devices. Apple highlights features including FaceTime through Continuity Camera and Apple Music Sing with iPhone. Its Wi-Fi + Ethernet configuration adds Gigabit Ethernet and Thread, making that model worth considering if you need a wired connection or Thread networking as well as Apple’s ecosystem.

Apple announced tvOS 26 on June 9, 2025, with a Liquid Glass redesign, cinematic poster art, profile switching, easier app login, and Apple Music Sing updates. Software features can change; check the current tvOS version and availability of specific features where you live. Apple’s announcement describes the changes.

Choose Google TV Streamer for Google Home and its lower listed price
Google TV Streamer is a good match if you want Google TV and Google Home controls in the same device, or want its stated Google Home/Matter hub functionality and built-in Thread border router. Google positions the streamer around profiles, streaming and live-TV discovery, and home controls. Its U.S. manufacturer-listed price is lower than either Apple configuration, though your actual retail price may differ.
Picture and sound: the headline specs are close
Both manufacturers list support for 4K video at up to 60 frames per second and Dolby Vision, HDR10+, HDR10, and HLG. Both also list Dolby Atmos support. Those specifications do not guarantee that every show will play in every format: the television, app, available title, and audio equipment must also support the relevant feature. Apple’s technical specifications and Google’s device specifications provide the manufacturers’ format details.

Network, smart home, and setup considerations
Compare wired and wireless connections
Apple lists Wi-Fi 6, while Google lists Wi-Fi 802.11ac. Both offer a Gigabit Ethernet path: it is part of Apple’s Wi-Fi + Ethernet configuration, while Google lists it for Google TV Streamer. If you plan to connect by Ethernet, compare Apple’s higher-tier configuration with Google’s device rather than treating Apple’s lower-priced Wi-Fi model as a like-for-like wired option.
Match the smart-home features to your household
Google explicitly presents Google TV Streamer as a Google Home/Matter hub with a built-in Thread border router. Apple lists HomeKit accessory support and Matter, with Thread networking on the Wi-Fi + Ethernet model. The practical choice depends on the compatible smart-home devices and ecosystem you already use; these feature lists alone do not establish that one will work with every accessory you own.

Check the display and cable before setup
- Apple TV 4K: Apple says 4K and HDR streaming require a 4K and HDR television, and an HDMI cable is required. An Apple Account is needed for purchases, rentals, and Home Sharing.
- Google TV Streamer: Google says a 1080p display limits output to 1080p. A certified HDMI 2.1 cable is required and sold separately.
- Both devices: You need an HDMI connection, and neither device removes the need for a compatible display or streaming subscriptions.
What the published specifications cannot tell you
The manufacturer pages establish supported features and listed prices, not which device is faster, more reliable, easier to navigate, or carries fewer advertisements. They also do not establish comparative long-term support. Those questions require evidence beyond the published product descriptions, so the decision here is best made by matching the stated platform, network, and smart-home features to your needs.
